Teacher charged in child molestation
An assistant band teacher at a south Kansas City private school has been charged with four misdemeanor counts related to allegations that he inappropriately touched an elementary school student, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Tod A. Barnard, 53, faces two counts of Child Molestation 2nd Degree and two counts of Assault 3rd Degree.*
According to court records filed this morning, Barnard was an assistant band teacher at the school where the 11-year-old victim was a student. In class, Barnard would pretend to fall and touch her in places that made her uncomfortable, the victim stated during a forensic interview. The first time he tripped and fell into her, he touched and clutched her breast over her shirt. The victim detailed that it happened about once a week. The same teacher would also touch her in the hallway, the student stated.
Baker praised school officials for acting quickly and immediately reporting the student’s allegations to the Children’s Division of Missouri. “This is exactly what is required under Missouri law for mandated reporters,” she said.
Prosecutors have requested a bond of $10,000/10 percent.
