Call this one a lunch link . . . No Bull BBQ – A Kansas City BBQ Blog is a pretty sound resource and here's their latest regarding a JoCo offering: Don’t Judge BBQ By Its Strip Mall
With no respect to the Golden Ghetto:
JOHNSON COUNTY BBQ IS NOT KANSAS CITY BBQ AND THERE'S NOT A SINGLE ORIGINAL SPOT IN THE GOLDEN GHETTO THAT'S A DECENT STAND ALONE LOCATION!!!
Just like JoCo itself . . . BBQ located in the Golden Ghetto is derivative and really only serves to highlight the restaurants of better, more authentic and tastier locations within KCMO City limit.
Name your JoCo favorite BBQ place . . . It sucks. This rule of thumb holds true and encompasses nearly every JoCo offering. Only by going east or South or maybe Martin City do standalone BBQ locations earn a decent rating on their own merits. However, just like their stucco mini-mansions . . . JoCo fare is simply a knockoff of better Kansas City, Missouri BBQ.
This strip mall joint just kinda proves my point . . .

Sorry, Tony, but on this one you're just out to lunch. All kinds of great barbecue is made in all kinds of places, in and outside of KCMO, by all kinds of people. There may be some particularly bad barbecue in JoCo (or Platte Co or Clay Co), but there may be some in KCMO too. People can't even agree on what KC barbecue is ... the thin, salty-peppery and vinegary Bryant version or the thick, sweet Gates et al version. It's all good but not all the same. KC is as much a region (and a bi-state region) as it is one municipality in Missouri.
ReplyDeletePlatte Co or Clay Co agree.
ReplyDeleteBut aren't JoCo places usually just spinoffs?
1:17, are you a heavy smoker? Your pallete isn't quite up to par. The hallmark of KC sauce is tomato-based with some sweetness. Bryants is an outlier, and in fact they have other sweet sauces now.
ReplyDeleteNot true, Brobecks is really good and the meat is ALWAYS dead on the money at 105th and Roe.
ReplyDeleteBrobeck's is plenty good, RJ's is great and was featured on the Food Network. Oklahoma Joe's is in Kansas. Gathering information and reporting is hard.
ReplyDeleteBrobeck's is great. So is Johnny's in Mission.
ReplyDeleteHaywards used to be the real deal...then it went down the shitter.
ReplyDeleteOP hasn't been the same for fine dining since the salad bar at Golden Corral closed.
ReplyDeleteBrobeck's - Trash.
ReplyDeleteHaywards - In the shitter.
RJ's - Not even BBQ.
Oklahoma Joe's - OVERRATED TRIPE.
Hate to agree with TKC on this one but JoCo is a no man's land of fake barbeque joints.
Golden Ghetto BBQ is like going to Wal Mart and getting some Old #7 in a package and pouring some honey on it. No, Golden Ghetto yuppies don't know shit about BBQ.
ReplyDeleteBryant's original sauce never was universally popular. A lot of people never liked it. But for others, it was the definition of Kansas City barbecue, even though most KC barbecue isn't remotely like it. The inheritors of the Bryant brand make sweeter sauces now because, I imagine, they outsell the original version by a wide margin.
ReplyDeleteFor me, Bryant's original was what I had whenever I visited KC for most of my adult life. The other stuff was pretty much like barbecue in most of the rest of the country, with a few exceptions like the Carolinas. Bryant's original was unlike anything else anywhere. Going to Bryant's, when Arthur was still in charge, was an act of pilgrimage. Going anywhere else in town, while it may have gotten you an excellent meal, was just lunch.
Fuck all you bitches, the best barbecue comes off my smoker set up in my backyard. My friends love it say it's the best in town. So if you're not a friend of mine you have no clue what good is.
ReplyDeleteFinally, a factual statement on this blog. Good for you @ 7:43
