SNAP ARGUES AGAINST "PERHAPS THE WORST LEGAL TACTIC BY BISHOP EVER"

In a statement released today . . . Victim advocacy group SNAP calls out what seems to be a successful strategy for Bishop Finn that seemingly takes advantage of an important legal loophole . . .

Church says it’s not responsible for crimes - Their rationale: abuse happened on private property

"A man who says he was sexually assaulted as a child by a priest is asking the Missouri Supreme Court to reverse a ruling that ended his civil lawsuit against Kansas City Catholic officials. Clergy sex abuse victims called the court decision “bizarre” and are harshly criticizing Bishop Robert Finn for his defense tactics in the litigation.

"Two weeks ago, a western Missouri appeals court tossed out the case of John Doe D.T. v. the Kansas City Catholic diocese and Fr. Michael Tierney. The court ruled that Catholic officials could not be held responsible for the priest’s supposed child sex crimes because they allegedly occurred on private property, not church property.

"“The blame here squarely lies with Bishop Robert Finn. He could have fought this case on the merits. Instead, he’s fighting it on technicalities, and in fact, on the most absurd technicality: where Fr. Tierney and his victim were standing when Fr. Tierney sodomized the child,” said Barbara Dorris of SNAP."

  3. Civil libertarian that you are, Tony, think carefully what SNAP is asking for here.

SNAP is saying that all "supervisors" should be held legally responsible for everything any "employee" does, whether on the job or off on his/her own time, and whether at the job site or anywhere else.

There is no way to limit this just to bishops and priests.

  4. Let's also remember that this case has nothing to do with Finn. The supposed events took place decades before he got here. SNAP is just pissed off because they'll get a smaller kickback from the lawyer since a priest doesn't have the same deep pockets.

  7. WORLD COURT:

    Your Honor,
I'm not saying I did, but if I dropped a nuclear bomb on Country X and killed millions of people, I did it from international airspace and never set foot on their territory, therefore you must conclude that I'm innocent of these charges.....not that I'm admitting anything!

  9. Uh, no, 8:56, that's not international airspace. It is impossible to drop a nuclear bomb or even lob a missile at another country without violating that nation's airspace.

  10. It is hilarious to hear SNAP complain about "technicalities" after the shenanigans they tried to pull to get out of a subpoena.
