TKC Note: Tonight our pal Craig Glazer considers the changing world and evolving attitudes toward the LGBT community in Kansas City and across the globe. Check it:
Is it a gay, gay,
gay world?
Most of us are old enough to remember the difficulties put upon people that were homosexual. In fact, in some places, it was actually illegal. Just a few decades ago, in countries like Germany, you could be imprisoned or worse for being a homosexual. In the more recent current events, people that were gay generally were outcasts. We all can remember those days in elementary school, junior high, or beyond where people would be belittled for being nerdy, out of shape or not very good at sports and it was acceptable, if not encouraged, to call them things like ‘fags’, ‘queerbait’ and ‘homo’ among other slurs. Simply put, being a homosexual, even in America, until very recently was something you wanted to hide so you wouldn’t be physically or verbally attacked. The world has changed, for the most part (unless of course, you are Russian).
The acceptance of being gay could quite possibly be attributed to the ‘coolness’ of such a lifestyle that has been illuminated by the Hollywood elite. Hollywood has always had a large homosexual contingency, not only with actors and actresses, but with film-makers, agents and studio heads. Rumors surfaced a couple of decades ago from studios like Universal and Disney, of some of the most powerful people within those companies being gay. While most of these men and women never admitted it, the rumors and gossip soon became a reality. In fact, there was a running joke that it was easier to name the smaller list of those celebrities who were straight than it was to list those who weren’t. Some of the bigger names include movie stars like Tom Cruise and John Travolta, and television stars like Ellen DeGeneres and Anderson Cooper, just to name a few. We all know that women being bisexual comes pretty close to being a ‘rage’ today. Much of the credit for this new found popular trend would have to go to Hollywood superstar, Madonna. We could spend all day naming the film, television and entertainment stars who were or are gay, it’s not a secret.
Most of us did not experience the new-found glory of being bisexual as a student. I am told by teenagers that some of the most popular kids in school, especially boys, are bisexual. Used to be those are the guys who got their ass kicked, today they are both king and queen at the proms.
Maybe most important change, is the legalization of gay marriage in a handful of states across America. Much like the marijuana laws changing, and headed towards national legalization, as it should be, the acceptance of men and women being homosexual has finally come to the forefront of the American identity in a positive way. What the nation is coming to terms with is the fact that being gay is not an illness, it’s not a sign of mental instability, but instead a way of life that harms nobody. Even the AIDS virus, which was strongly attributed to the homosexual community, has all but vanished as has the unfair stigmata it attached to the gay community.
While there are still haters, and there always will be, from the Christian right and people who ‘just think it’s wrong’, the majority of Americans are now seeing the gay lifestyle as just that, a lifestyle. In fact some of the most popular restaurants and nightclubs in America have a gay ‘flair’ or ambience to them. There’s a hipness in the air surrounding this newly acceptable way of life. Right here in Kansas City we have several good examples like Missy B’s, one of the most popular bars in the area, and Hamburger Mary’s, a restaurant popular with gays and straight people alike.
I’ve always said live and let live. I don’t think anybody makes you become a homosexual or for that matter makes you do drugs or live any other lifestyle you don’t want to accept. It bothers me to look back in the not too distant past and see the mistreatment of these folks who were gay as much as it bothers me to look back and see the ten and twenty year sentences given (especially in places like Texas) to men and women who possessed small amounts of marijuana. The acceptance of gay men and women in our communities as well as the workplace has long been needed. We need to learn not to judge others by the way we see the world and how it should be lived in but as long as people that are different aren’t harming us, they have every right to live life the way they see fit. God Bless America.

Okay, I have to admit it. That's different and Craig kinda shocked me that he's a very tolerant person. Shocked me in a good way. Way to go Craig!
ReplyDeleteThis from a guy who had his poop chute pounded nightly while in prison.
ReplyDeleteGlazer tolerant you must being using some of Craigs drugs if you think that. This is a fluff job by Glazer trying to get the gay people to come to his club.
ReplyDeleteOne correction, Glaze: It is not a "lifestyle". It is a life.
ReplyDeleteMaybe even worse then bashing gays is bashing people we assume are gay. I'm often "accused" of being gay on this blog. One person even said that my father told people I am gay. (I wear thick glasses, therefore I must be gay. This is just more of the ignorance of the so-called greatest generation.) He attended my wedding to a woman. Yet, he still claimed he raped my fiancee to prove to me that I'm not a real man, but a fag. After he hit me & then bragged about raping my fiance I beat him up. Mark decided I was gay when I was only thirteen since I didn't brag about the girls I had sex with. Gay bashing & this 'accusing' stuff is just the hall mark of insecure men. Both Mark & my father hated being tall & were very insecure about their man-hood. I don't get it. I never have. If we harass gay people we will be harassed for something ourselves, because we've encouraged intolerance & hatred.
ReplyDeleteSorry, I don't write as well as Craig, & I agree with 4:33. I am pleasantly surprised with this post. Way to go Craig!
To take a once proud flag and make it some rainbow colored mixture, is a travesty to those valiant Americans who died to defend it. What a fine crock of shit this is!! America is dead, just go ahead a throw some more dirt in her face...
ReplyDeleteYou're suggesting Americans fought wars and sacrificed their lives to protect the country from homosexuality? You must be smoking some really bad shit, probably rolled up in bible pages. Your brain needs a douche.
ReplyDeletewell this is some fine sentiment.
ReplyDeletei'll roll one for glazer tonight. don't really do the gay thing, but will def smoke a spliff in honor of glazer.
I got called a fag once for playing nude twister with some dudes at a party.
ReplyDelete5:16-that's terrible! You are gonna roll a homo and then celebrate, smoking a spliff?
ReplyDeleteJust turn your new location into a gay only place Glaze your life will be a lot easier.
ReplyDeleteYou got two gay bars and a gay burger joint over there to compete against. Good luck running a straight club among it.
ReplyDeleteByron, mark says your dad was just a big ol' loveable Teddy bear, to him.
ReplyDeleteGlazer must be listening to closet queers like Kevin Hennossy to come up with bullshit like that. And yes Hennossy is an arragant cocksucker. Absolutely stupid, Glazer. I thought you were smarter than to go with that crowd.
ReplyDeleteBetter get some drag gear Glaze if you want to survive over there at 37th and Broadway.
ReplyDeleteYou'd look good in a tutu.
Anything for a buck, huh glazer.
ReplyDeleteByron reading what you just said proves you are gay.
ReplyDeleteAnd Glazer is gay as well that is why he wants to be by the Uptown. That is why he does all his hottie stories try to keep you all thinking he is straight. Hearnie and him been closet lovers for years.
First weekend didn't go to well?
ReplyDeleteSince KH married a Dyke I suppose it all makes sense?
ReplyDeleteLook forward to some lovin, touching, and squeezing the hunky Glazer at his new place! No doubt he'll be an attentive and willing host!
ReplyDeleteGlazer has never been initiated. I wouldn't get to excited.
ReplyDeletePlease no more Craig Glazer. You have great blog except for his junk. Enough is enough, no more.
ReplyDeleteMy basic wish is that we would quit all our wishing in America and get on with the job of transforming our economic arrangements to a scale and mode that are consistent with the resource and capital realities of these times — before they whap us upside the head and put and end to the project of remaining civilized.
ReplyDeleteCome on already next post.
ReplyDeleteHere comes the onslaught of gay comics at Craigs new club in the fag district. Probably going to get reviews from TKC also.
ReplyDeleteWhy the fuck does TKC care and therefore (we) should care what the fuck CG has to say?
ReplyDeleteHe writes like a moron.
Liked this column from Glaze. He's switching it up a bit and I think his commentary is much better than most of the stuff I read in the star.
ReplyDeleteGreedo, damn you must be one fucked up person.
ReplyDeleteGlazer would suck the chicken grease out of a niggers shit if he thought their was a dollar in it for him and would get him on TV for 5 seconds.
ReplyDeleteByron, that was a lot of info.
ReplyDeleteWow.
Ouch!!
ReplyDeleteIs Glazer a queer?
ReplyDeleteI have never seen a single group of people who think it is so important for the world to know they buttfuck. To top it off they seem to think it is important that I and everyone else approve of how they have sex. Because if it is not about their sexuality then why the fuck are they spending their lives shouting to the world they are gay?
ReplyDeleteI happen to be a single tax payer and I think we as a group get screwed more than anyone. We pay for all those bastard kids, schools, social programs and a world of shit we never use. I don't ever remember winning an argument because in the middle of it I screamed, "I'm tired of being screwed over because I am straight" or "Why can't I get medicare because I am a single straight male". Jo one gives a shit who I am fucking or how I do it because it is irrelevant.
I would suggest ath the gays just live with teh worlds inequities like I do, shut the fuck up and stop announcing they are queers every tie they get up to use the pencil sharpener. No one gives a shit and no one needs to know how they fuck. If they really think marching down the street is going to give them any real credibility they need to be asking themselves, "Why should anyone give a shit who or how I fuck?", because promoting how you fuck has nothing to do with the real inequities every category of human deals with. We all get discriminated against and fucked over if we can whittle our whole down into some class we can fit in.
Haters just shut the fuck up. Till you have felt a 10 inch dick pounding your turd trail you have no idea what you are talking about. It's like when that snort of coke explodes in your brain. And when you get a reach around at the same time it's the best sex ever. Black Barbie can't even come close to sucking dick like my boyfriends can.
ReplyDeleteWell then you are qualified to run in the ticket with Hilary
ReplyDeleteGlazer you can lose my number you over roided asshole.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading this story I knew the hate bugs would jump and hard. They did. Love your smarts Craig.
ReplyDelete9:08 just proved how smart they are not
ReplyDeleteSilly fagotts...dicks are for chicks.
ReplyDeleteGlazer,yes or no question ..
ReplyDeleteHAVE YOU EVER?
No fucking way in hell Glazer wrote this. For starters he would never sit long enough to do it, plus he fucking couldn't type that many words in a day. And yes I do know what the fuck I am talking about.
ReplyDeleteHell Glazer was in prison hell yes he has
ReplyDeleteAnon 5:35
ReplyDeleteAsk Mark who broke his nose. And how many times did he break it. My nose is broken, & all three of my brothers, by our alcoholic father.
Anon 7:38
Yes, I tend to over share. A trait of the middle child.
Byron, your dad sure sounds like a prick! Is he dead?
ReplyDeleteAnon 11:04
ReplyDeleteYes, he's dead.
Is it fair to say that your dad was more than just a mean drunk,he was a sadist?
ReplyDelete.....GLAZEAMAZING.....
ReplyDeleteAnon 11:34
ReplyDeleteHe fought in the Battle of the Bulge as an eighteen year old raw recruit. He suffered from PTSD, which he self medicated with alcohol. Also, he was a man of his generation. He had his good points. Just as sometimes he would behave like an animal, sometimes he was there for me, & all of us. So, no, he was not a sadist. My siblings over look his faults to the point of co-dependency, but he was not a complete monster. Had he been of another generation, he would have behaved differently. Especially, if he had not been made to become an eighteen year old sniper. He was the company marksmen & was put up for a silver star & a bronze star, but didn't care for these things & didn't hang around after the war to collect them. He just wanted to go home to his mother as fast as he could. He was a large viral man. Think Clint Walker only taller.
geez what a fucking pity me fuck you asshole get a job
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing Byron.
ReplyDeleteFuck the internet badasses, biggest cowards around.
oh, btw 11:53..
He'd fuck u up.
regards,Byron
Ms. 11:53
ReplyDeleteNo, I'm not a pity fuck, you asshole. No, I'm not going to get a job. I'm done working. Your English is so bad, you make me look like a scholar. Unemployment is very high, so high that only blind old men can find work. God, you dumbasses are amazing.
Again, thanks for the assist 12:01.
ReplyDeleteYes lots of job West Virginia for welfare fakers
ReplyDelete12:01 it's all bullshit like the crap he made up about Mark
ReplyDeleteAnytime! Not that you need it,but I do hate a bully.
ReplyDelete12:24 must be another one of those low lifes who sits at home on his ass collecting a check from the government for doing nothing only because he don't want to work.
ReplyDelete8:06: You have an excellent point about single people getting screwed by the system, so do something about it already. Once gay people have full economic rights, that will have paved the way for singles to organize for theirs. Gay people successfully used the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment, and I don't see why that wouldn't work for singles as well. There's no reason anyone should have to subsidize other people just because they're married and you're not.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all it's a life, not a lifestyle. And although Glazer thinks straight hipsters want to hang out at gay clubs, that's not what a gay bar is for. It's for gays, not straight hipsters.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the gunfire. Tony never lose Glazer, he is the 'heat.' Yes.
ReplyDelete"it bothers me to look back and see the ten and twenty year sentences given (especially in places like Texas) to men and women who possessed small amounts of marijuana"
ReplyDeleteactually, in Kansas too
under Vern Miller
who CG worked for
GOLD BADGE, BITCHES!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat makes Craig of such interest is his diverse background. I think it is unequaled. Comedy, film,Hollywood, prison, lawman, outlaw, robber, businessman, political power, radio personality. I can't think of anyone who has this resume. Even his 'bad' side is of interest. Tony you scored big getting this person to write for you. If our city was a bigger media market he would be our Mark Merrin and then some.
