ReplyDeleteBrian Burnes at the Star must be a complete moron. His assessment of why the Noland Road corridor is as it is is completely off base. Lets start with the city managers plan to build a premium tax zone off I-70 with stores like Bass Pro. No here Independence sets with no takers and a tab that has the city picking up millions in debt every year. Then you have Wallmart and Sams Club that the city allowed to move from the Noland Road area to the most congested intersection in Western Missouri (291 & 39th). Then Best buy followed and moved across the street from Independence Mall. While the city was busy congesting the 291 area in order to drum up more tax revenue, they were allowing the blood to be sucked out of Noland Road. Several years ago, at least one state politician warned the city that they were going to destroy the Nolan Road area if they continued to entice businesses to move away near the Independence Center. Nevertheless the city marched on. Now the I-70 retail expansion plan has been a failure with probably 35 percent of the businesses closing and not relocating anywhere near Independence. This is what happens when hot shot local politicians dream up big plans and wreck good business. Kansas City has seen the same thing with the Metro North Mall being crucified by the city in order to drum up more taxes at Zona Rosa. Let's not even talk about the train wrecks created by the abuse of eminent domain.
ReplyDeleteWe have digressed from a time when cities planned and zoned to a day where cities actively participate, compete against and destroy local business for the sake of squeezing more tax money out of every acre.
It is damn hard to believe that we once did just fine with no property taxes, a 1 percent sales tax and low state income tax, but it seems we also did much finer when government had a life that didn't include a bunch of wannabe business men wrecking business due to ignorance.
You are not even safe in Independence Kansas from these black animals.
