"Many fast food workers and community leaders met at St. Mark Hope and Peace Lutheran Church at 38th and Troost around 6:30 a.m. Throughout the day, workers at a Burger King in Kansas City, Kan., and at a Church’s Chicken and McDonald’s in Kansas City, Mo., will walk off the job."
And so . . . The converse of this news story suggests that any enterprising folks looking to land a job today might want to hit up one of these places where politics has unduly influenced workers who might not realize that corporate restaurants are NEVER going to give in to their quite reasonable demands.

Driving home from work at KU Med was an interesting scene...a hundred or so mostly blacks chanting "fight back" and wearing "We're Worth More" shirts while whites, Asians and Indian nursing and med students walked on the opposite side of Rainbow for another day of study or work.

McDonalds food is disgusting. They could strike 20 years from now and I would eat there ever again. The whole thing is pointless. These crazies want fast-food workers to earn more than Customer Service Representatives, Office Receptionist and other bottom rung positions when fast-food is the absolute bottom rung; and the quality of food demonstrates that. What a waste of time! There are more prominent problems in the world... this issue doesn't even scratch the surface.

This movement will only speed up McDonald's move towards customer self-service ordering. You walk up to the counter, interact with a touch-screen that has pictures of all the menu items, swipe your card, and pick up your order. A couple of kitchen and order fillers, with no more counter staff, problem solved!

ReplyDeleteMaybe local groups should target local businesses instead of national chains. For example most local bars and clubs and even hotel facilities only pay a state minimum wage and the servers are expected to make up wages with tips. What about the local Sports arenas and stadiums where these government subsidized operations don't generally pay any more than McDonalds. What about those folks working at the P&L? Lets clean up our own house before we start telling Wallmart and Mickey D's how to run their businesses.

ReplyDeleteNot only is the idea of $15/hr ridiculous, 90% of the morons that work in fast food don't even perform at a reasonable level anyway. I don't eat fast food very often, but even when I do, the order is usually effed up after I've driven away.
ReplyDeleteNo Byron it is not thinking less of the people in the job it is putting the job in proper perspective to other jobs that require more skill and taining and would still earn less.
ReplyDeleteThese jobs should be ENTRY level and the low wage is an incentive to either work your way up that resturant chain's ladder or get a better job or training in a different field that pays more. Heck if you like food service use the experience to go work at a more upscale establishment that will also pay more.
If there are people stuck at fast food we need to make sure they have access to the education and vocational training for the jobs that are out there and move on.
Otherwise it is on them if they decide to just coast and stay there. I worked fast food the summer following high school graduation and the summer following freshman year in college. When I felt like not studying or skipping class, the thought of having to go back there pushed me off my lazy rump.

Problem is education and training will only get you a bill collector on your student loan. The decent paying jobs just are not there for skilled workers no matter how much bullshit we put on it. Sure the CEOs and major corporations make disproportionate salaries/benefits but this only targets franchise owners for the most part. I agree with raising the minimum wage but this campaign is like most really liberal plans - poorly thought out and poorly executed. We're fucked.

ReplyDeleteMost of the people who are not teenagers are working in fast food places because they are unemployable by other occupations. It's not always a matter of "education" either. Mostly entitled attitudes and poor work ethic. Many of them are people who have been on the government tit or taking out loans to be permanent "students" in basket weaving courses just so they don't have to get a real job and put up with the frustrations the rest of us do. This whole - you must get an education thing - is total bullshit and ruining our country. Yes, it you want to be a doctor, lawyer, nurse etc you should get an education. Most of these people are getting some sort of general degree that does not prepare them for the real world.

ReplyDeleteThere are skilled labor jobs everywhere. Just run a search on any job board for facility maintenance, plumbing, HVAC, CDL drivers, electrical installers, assemly line maintenance, etc. And in other parts of the country you have oil rigger jobs booming.
The problem is we don't send people to the right place to train.
This needs to start at the votech in high school. There are even high school clubs that specialize in tech.
Go to the actual junior college instead and even the for-profit colleges with proven track records. How about union apprintice or just applying with a city and working your way up from entry level maintenance.
