JoCo Opposes Stoplight Removal Too!!!

Perspective . . . So many of you d-bags lashed out at the urban core for their concern over stoplights and now it seems that same hope to protect youngsters from traffic is apparent in The Golden Ghetto as well: "Some are upset that Overland Park is considering removing traffic light from in front of a city pool."

Comments

  1. There are lots of traffic signals that were installed generations ago, for any number of wrong reasons - typically a knee-jerk reaction to an accident or a close call. Political pressure then mounts, and the jurisdiction installs the traffic signal on a whim, without any consideration for whether it was actually warranted based on traffic volumes and/or numerical safety factors, per the MUTCD under 23 CFR.

Move to today - where the jurisdiction comes to realize that the signal in question at any of these intersections isn't providing effective traffic control as it should, and it would be a better use of money and resources to remove the signal in lieu of perhaps a 4-way stop or a roundabout. Or a two-way stop as well.

Traffic signals can be energy hogs. There's a lot more electronic equipment running than just the light bulbs you see.

It should be noted that a traffic signal is NOT intended as a safety device. The purpose of a traffic signal is to assign who has R/W at the intersection. There can be a safety component to the proper use and operation of a traffic signal. They can reduce more-severe crashes at an intersection. However, overall crashes will increase (in the form of rear-end collisions involving traffic stopping for a red).

OP should perhaps give serious consideration to a roundabout with pedestrian crosswalks if this intersection's traffic volumes would be such to accommodate and land were available to build it.

GD are you ever stupid with that rant 10:36

A roundabout proves you don't even know the area we are talking about.

STFU and stop playing big shot you fail worse than Glazer or Harley.

  3. If anything, we need more traffic lights in the Golden Ghetto, that way the soccer moms will have more time to pay attention to their smart phones.

  4. What experience do you have in traffic and transportation engineering? I have 11 years and am a licensed engineer.

Not a rant at all. Professional and expert observation..

What your response goes to show is some people are offended by competence and intelligence.

    Sorry, 97th St.

    I google-street viewed this intersection...

The first technically-incorrect thing with this signal is the use of the signal head facing 97th street, way over on the left-side of the approach. Although it is correctly done - a minimum of 2 indications for the major movement (left-turn from 97th in this case) - both indications should be, in this case, aligned in front of the lane the serve.

Secondly, there is the crosswalk crossing Antioch. There is no apparent pedestrian "Walk/Don't Walk" indication for people who would wish to cross from the house to the pool. There is the one however, on the side with the house for people crossing the other way.

Do pedestrians using this crosswalk get "green" at the same time as left-turning traffic from 97th?

If this signal is going to remain, and there are lots of pedestrians using that crosswalk - I would suggest the city add that missing pedestrian indication like I mention, then add in the controller an exclusive pedestrian phase (what some call a "scramble phase") - meaning vehicular traffic stops in all directions while the "Walk/Don't Walk" is given to those crossing the road.

But again, I'd suggest giving consideration to a HAWK signal - which might actually work well given this is a T-Intersection into a subdivision.

  11. Keep the stoplights, remove the politicians.

Also, note to city - you'll reduce stress on the joints of your masts if you'll move the green street name signs over to the far-right-hand side of the mast arm - thus resulting in less wind-loading versus having them in-between the indications, like Google shows it now.

And since you know my name, let's have yours.

And I don't need your permission to give opinions on an Internet blog.

And I know we have road projects that need to be done, so keep buying gas and paying MO gas taxes when you come up here. Keep payIng my salary, thanks.
