Take a quick look @ Jackson County efforts to encourage community involvement against crime . . .
Amid this year's tragic spike in violence, this effort from the County is one of the few signs that local politicos are paying attention to reality on local streets.
Double bonus . . . The Spanish translation effort was tasteful and mixed in with English to offer a Spanglish hybird that's mostly used to communicate among Latinos in the U.S. . . .
Example: More Latinos Read All About It In English

And so, at the very least Jackson County seems aware of so much carnage on local streets while City Hall is busy developing their next eco-devo project or looting money from the general fund in the guise of "customer service" . . . Natch.
More in a bit . . .
As a former Marine MP, a small business owner, and a community leader, Sly James is a tough, no-nonsense, results-oriented leader who will make Kansas City work for the people who live here. At a time when Kansas City is facing serious challenges we need a leader who has the ability to bring people together to make City Hall more efficient and deliver results. Sly James gets it, and he gets it done.

ReplyDeleteDeterring gun violence by targeting drug dealers. NIJ is evaluating a Project Safe Neighborhoods-sponsored program in High Point, N.C., that is applying a focused deterrence approach to the city's gun problem by targeting drug dealers operating in open markets within certain city neighborhoods. The theory is that focusing on drug dealing also reduces gun violence, based on data that appear to show that the two are closely intertwined in High Point. The researchers believe this is because open-air drug markets:
ReplyDeleteCreate attractive targets for armed robbers.
Draw local youth into the drug trade as well as nonresident drive-through buyers.
Spur creation of loose drug “crews” whose feuds can increase gun violence.
Lead to the acquisition and use of firearms by dealers, buyers and some residents.
Increase the likelihood that addicts will commit crimes involving firearms.
Other negative effects of open-air drug markets include loss of control of public space; increased property damage, robbery and thefts; and the creation of "toxic"norms.
In a speech to a business group, Mayor C. Ray Nagin asked how he could "stop New Orleans from being overrun by Mexican workers." At a New Orleans town hall meeting in Atlanta, displaced black civil rights activist Carl Galmon complained: "They're bringing in foreign workers from South America, Central America and Mexico, paying them $5 an hour sometimes for 80 hours a week. They are undercutting the American labor force in New Orleans."
ReplyDeleteI wish that the COMBAT people would come get the Illegal Yard signs they have placed in vacant lots and on lot lines in my neighborhood. It shows a total disrespect for property rights and the people.
ReplyDeleteMaybe a City-County unified government wouldn't be a bad idea on this side of the state line.
