Where have you gone, Kelly Jones?

I was saddened to hear that KCTV 5 had dropped their morning talk show titled ‘Better Kansas City’. In so doing, they also announced that they had parted company with the beautiful hostess of the show, Kelly Jones. Jones and Lisa Holbrook took turns interviewing guests Monday through Friday on the show. The subjects were both local and national, they also interviewed chefs and restaurateurs from all over the Kansas City area who showed the viewing audience how to cook great dishes. These included men like Jasper Mirabile from Jasper’s among many other notable KC chefs. What many truly enjoyed were the interviews with authors from all over the country. Kelly had some great celebrity guests on her show, like the Wayans Brothers who were playing the Improv at the time. She even had unusual guests like former WWE Champion Mick Foley when he was performing here at Stanford & Sons. Two of Jones’ last exciting interviews were with Janet Williams, the Tennessee Tramp and the beautiful April Macie from the Howard Stern show.

Kelly Jones and I became friends several months ago when I began bringing comics out to perform for her TV show. Though Kelly and I hung out a couple of times we were professional friends, she was never my girlfriend. We did become friends and she was always very much a lady in the best definition of the term. Yes, I felt there was something there and I found her to be both intelligent and attractive. Maybe my reputation preceded me, and she felt dating me wouldn’t do anything for her career, if you know what I mean.

In fact, there was a running bit on 610 Sports about another Kelly Jones contender, Carrington Harrison, a young sports DJ versus me, the older , evil ‘emporer’. I guess we both went ‘ofer’ on that one. In baseball terminology, that means nothing but strike outs. Yes, sports fans, for me that is a rarity but it happens even to the best of us.

Kelly spent her first two years in Kansas City, she moved here from San Diego where she did news, being an anchor on KCTV5 and hosting ‘Better Kansas City’. Kelly was very involved in community programming in Kansas City. Kelly was one of the people that judged the Chief’s cheerleaders, promoted the Negro League Hall of Fame, promoted cultural education in Mid-Town, attended the Plaza Lighting Ceremony, and seemed to be on hand for almost every Kansas City event social or charitable.

Personally, I think it’s a big loss for our city if Kelly does not land another media job here in KC, be it television or radio. I believe she makes a great representative for our city. Having been in the entertainment business most of my adult life, I know talent when I see it. This young lady has it all. With all that said, she still finds the time to be a fantastic mother to her two young children. Kelly, I, along with thousands of other Kansas Citians, wish you the best whether it’s here or another market within these United States. Best of Luck!
