Finally, Kansas City, Summer is just days away…with weather to match…at least for the moment. Though it’s not official, Memorial Day seems to be the big summer kick-off. All that summer fun is on the way. Rockfest at Liberty Memorial this Saturday, the Kansas City Royals actually seem to have a real baseball team this year, Sporting Kansas City is selling out every game, a boatload of concerts but maybe most important of all, the pools open. Many of you have a semi-private pool at your apartment or condo or perhaps you belong to a country club or a neighborhood that offers up an Olympic-size pool and place to grab that perfect summer tan. Better yet, some of you may even have pools in your back yard. Nothing you’ve imagined or ever seen in this city will even come close to equaling what Blair Tanner and his Woodside team have put together for a summer long outdoor extravaganza.
Blair took over the lead position at Woodside Tennis and Health Club in 2004 and he has redone the interior twice as well as has replaced nearly all the weight room and workout equipment with the state-of-the-art, expensive and efficient new equipment. You think, well, we have Lifetime Fitness memberships, it’s pretty hip. My folks country club, Mission Hills, just spent a pretty penny redoing their clubhouse and it’s gorgeous. Let’s not forget the Jones pool downtown at Power and Light, always packed on Saturdays. Yes, all that is true, but Tanner has just spent over two million dollars just to redecorate the decks, the bars, the food concessions, the incredible lounges and awnings and he’s even added in fountains and a live performance stage. Woodside boasts four nice-sized pools, two on the upper deck for adults, an Olympic-sized pool for families and kids below and a baby pool for young children next to the larger pool.
They have been working on it for over six months and it reminds one of the many Arrowhead rebuilds. These spectacular pool areas with heavy wooden fence lines to separate the various areas from each other are about three weeks away from completion. Trust me, it will be the 8th Wonder of Entertainment for this town. Woodside will be the nicest pool and summer entertainment area in the Mid-west.
Woodside has always been a Who’s Who of both the upwardly mobile singles as well as young married couples. With this extraordinary renovation, Woodside is going to have its ‘swagger on’ all summer long. I have been a member there off and on for better than thirty years. I’m not easily impressed with pool areas. I have seen the ones in Las Vegas as well as Los Angeles. The pools at Woodside will compare to the top-notch swimming facilities of both locations.
While Woodside is planning to start construction on their massive apartment/shopping addition for 2015, this new pool extravaganza only wet’s your whistle for what’s coming next. I can’t even imagine how many of Kansas City’s best looking young ladies will be early visitors to the Woodside Pool’s opening extravaganza in early June. Remember, they are not all members, some of them are guests. Blair and his staff have gone out of their way to keep a nice balance between the singles and the families. There is something at Woodside for everyone. If you want to have a great time and see something unique in the Mid-west, make sure you begin your summer with a tour of this incredible health and entertainment facility. There are too many amenities for me to mention here that make the price of admission an incredible value in today’s tough economic times.
The good news is you still have a few weeks to lose those extra five or ten pounds and head on out to see just what I’m talking about. You won’t be disappointed. Thank you, Blair and staff, for giving our city something like this to be proud of and show off to out of town visitors. When I’m not at Stanford’s on weekend nights, I’ll be poolside at Woodside. Hope I get there in time to find a comfortable lounge chair. It will be crushingly busy.

Craig, I was a member at Woodside til around 2008. Enjoyed the club. Great members, fun place. I did think the pool area needed to be redone. My brother took me out there about ten days ago to see the new gym and look at the pools being redone. You nailed it. My jaw dropped. I think the last time I saw something like that was at a resort in Atlantis. Well that was bigger but this is great. I'm considering joining Woodside again.

ReplyDeleteMy family just joined Woodside two weeks ago. One of the owners, David, showed us around. I am from San Diego. This place with its new pool area and extras is simply the nicest health and tennis club I've seen. The prices for what your family receives are unbeatable.

ReplyDeleteMost of my friends and neighbors have been to the newly improved club. I have not yet seen the new pool area, my friends say it is quite nice. We all like the health club and some of us use it often. I don't know of anyone who has anything against it. I don't know mister Glazer so I can't comment on that issue, but I do like what he wrote here.

We belonged to Woodside for years (family membership). When we first joined, my children were young (5 and 9). My youngest had swim-lessons there, they both were on the swimteam. Then, the club seemed to start catering to 20-somethings. The "family pool" on the upper deck was done away with. The snake pit (which is what we called the other upper deck pool)was a singles bar. My son had started working part-time at the snack bar. It was closed. He continued to work part-time inside the club. One day he showed up for his schedule, and another employee was at his station. He was told by this employee that he was no longer working there. **This is how they "fired" him. I was outraged. He had never missed a day of work, and the club manager didn't have the courtesy to meet with him to tell him they no longer needed him. I cancelled our membership the next day. If they are indeed working to improve the facility, they need to improve their relationships with current members, not just selling memberships to new members...

I grew up at Woodside in the 70's; my family was one of the first members the year they opened. Bummer about Craig Glazer being a member and showing us what it is now. I guess when we decide to join a club we'll have to look at Homestead instead.
ReplyDeleteCraig, any thought of you being a credible source of information was lost on me last night. Me and my friends love comedy and have been going to shows for years. We try to only pick comedians we have seen and like because, as much as we love a good show, there's nothing worse than two hours of not laughing at all. We heard you praising this hometown "comic" on the radio and wanting to support a local guy we decided to go. According to you he's won several competitions and even featured on Comedy Central, so surely he's funny right? Not even close. This was by far the worst show I had ever seen and my friends agreed. Trying to give your club and this Brad guy the benefit of the doubt we considered we may have just caught him on a bad night so we did some research. These competitions you claimed he won, not only did he not place, the guy has never made it through the first round. There is no mention of him anywhere on Comedy Central. That's the equivalant of taking a person who was kicked out in the audition phase of American Idol and claiming you have last year's winner. Good quality source here Tony. But still thinking we are missing something we went to the guys homepage to see where he has worked. It appears he has been host at a few other actual comedy clubs and even that does not appear to be happening anymore. We have seen local guys hosting your club and some are really funny. We have seen and enjoyed local talent such as AJ or Mike and it was a great time. Now you are taking people who are, at best, a host in other clubs and making them your main attraction? Times are slipping here. Even a full refund would never give us back the two hours of our life your advertising stole from us. Craig's credibility level is zero Tony.

This Joel Weinberg, I work at Stanfords, a manager there. I was at the show last night. First off its a 90 minute show not two hours, lie one. Second, Grasshopper featured and killed it, tons of laughs. lie two. Brad also did a nice job. He is not a super star and nobody said he was, he's a young sharp comic. He HAS BEEN ON TRIAL BY LAUGHTER, ON THE HBO 21 BILLING IN KC, WORLD SERIES OF COMEDY, TWICE..SO YOUR A LIAR ON THAT ONE. Nobody said comedy central...that was the comic he replaced Ben Glieb. Ben had to do a tv show this week so Brad replaced him. Piece of shit mean Craig gave the young man his shot. I hope I see you whoever you are. Make stuff up about the Improv if you will not the premier comedy club in America. Thank you.

Nobody said the first guy was not better than the second, so I'm not sure how you pointing that out makes me a liar. I never said he was not in those competitions; I said he was not "featured" or did not win them as it was made to sound. He was knocked out of them after the first time he got on stage in each one. It appears none of it was lies. Stop arguing points I never made. My point is do not promote what is not there. It is not as if people are going to show up and not realize they have been fooled.

Just saw this item. I've been to Stanfords at all their locations at least once a year over the last 15 years. I've seen many comics that are on TV or movies, my favorite was lisa Lamponelli at Overland Park. I had never heard of her before that night. My boyfriend took me. Couldn't stop laughing.

As far as his looks, Craig, you are an extremely handsome man for any age. He just is, and I have seen photos online and in the papers, very nice looking.

One of the female staffers told her that they all have nicknames for him, none of which are too kind. Generally when he is down at the pool he surrounded by some dudes that look like Jersey Shore rejects, and not women. Honestly, I can't believe they let him be a member with the way he harasses women.

ReplyDeleteI am also an owner. I owe you no answer. Craig not only is well liked and respected, he has brought Woodside great press from the KC Star as well as online with Hearne and other media. Many of his friends have joined from both the sports world and simply good people. Craig has brought out countless stars to visit Woodside over the years from Pauley Shore, Michael Winslow and many other comedy stars even some of the women like April Macie and film people as well. Any club would enjoy that. He's the real deal. No not to people who hate for no reason I'm sure. It's easy to be jealous of Craig, he and I discuss it all the time. I tell him, 'nothing you can do Craig you are a Hollywood type guy in a midwestern town and well known. You put it out there in the media and people here aren't used to that.' That's all.
