POORLY TIMED CONSTRUCTION CREATES KANSAS CITY RUSH HOUR DISASTER!!!

MoDOT has made a mess of Downtown Kansas City streets.

Yesterday traffic backups and snarls were the worst this town has seen in a decades . . .

To wit . . .

KANSAS CITY DRIVER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC JAM HOT MESS CREATED BY MoDOT HAVE REACHED A FEVER PITCH IN JUST THE OPENING DAYS OF THE HOT MESS!!!

This polite headline from KMBC doesn't even begin to cover the level of frustration on Kansas City streets . . .

Downtown construction projects to test driver patience

Tragically, this is a disaster for this town when it comes to attracting/keeping business and all of those precious tourism dollars that local politicos seem to covet. This is a long term problem given that the construction hot mess shows a FAILURE OF KANSAS CITY POLITICOS TO PLAN AND COORDINATE STREET CONSTRUCTION . . . Like it or not, that's a longstanding danger of doing business in or with Kansas City that will linger well after this litany of road blocks are removed.

DEVELOPING . . .

  1. So we're not supposed to maintain infrastructure lest we inconvenience commuters? Once built, roads and bridges are supposed to last forever, as is, even in this Midwestern climate?

Here's a thought. There's lots of ways to get to downtown KC. If you don't like traffic backups due to construction, take one of alternate ways in, even if it takes a few more minutes.

  2. Let me guess major upswing in Road Rage incidents as citizens begin to crack and snap under the pressures.

    Snap.. Crackle and Pop.

  3. Streetcar would have saved us from it all.

  4. Traffic in KC. That's a funny one. Go one block over people. Even in the worst situation, there is no traffic in KC because you always have un-congested alternatives.

As far as modot. It would help if MO was not such a cheap state and actually funded Modot with a decent gas tax. One of the largest road systems with one of the smallest gas taxes. You get what you pay for, which is band aids and constant construction when most needs total replacement.

I-70 needs to be ripped out and rebuilt, then you can actually drive on it for a few years without it being "refurbished".

  5. Just wait until Main Street is dug up for the streetcar. Talk about a cluster f*#k. Once you get inside the downtown loop you won't be able to get to your office or a restaurant or anywhere. This will all coincide with the summer tourism season.

    Great planning, MoDot and KCMO.

  6. Right. Everybody knows there is only one street running through downtown.

  8. All the traffic that would have been on Main will now be on Grand, Walnut, Broadway, etc clogging those streets up. I feel bad for the businesses located on Main that will be losing money because their customers can't get to them. I myself wouldn't consider going to any of them until this hole construction mess is done.
I plan to stay away from downtown KC for the next year or so. I'll find things to do and places to eat out in other parts of the metro area.

    1. You shop at Walmart anyway so quit pretending to be cosmopolitan. You probably think First Fridays are when you soak your bunions.

  9. This is very surprising behavior by MODOT; not typical. Yesterday they had all eastbound lanes of I-70 closed on northeast side of the loop. No warning, no detour.

  10. Wait til the toy train arrives. The morons want to run it down Delaware Street in River Market. That street is one way with one traffic lane now. These streetcar idiots need to get back to the drawing board and hire even more of their friends that are consultants.

  13. I don't see as much of the girls at Bazookas as I used to.
