KANSAS CITY HALE COOK PUSH BACK!!!

Kansas City Public Schools are claiming a recent victory with the reopening of a school in Kansas City's favorite working-class white enclave.

However . . .

CHECK OUT EXCLUSIVE KCPS PUSH BACK THAT CALLS OUT THE LOCAL POLITICAL ELITE AND JUST A BIT OF WHAT MIGHT BE WALDO PREJUDICE!!!

Check it:

"TKC . . . (You should mention) The KCPS school district opening an entire school for maybe up to 75 kindergarten and first graders, (eventually second graders) just because the good white people of Waldo don't want to send their children to school with minority children. This Hale Cook thing is ridiculous. Children are stuffed into other KCPS schools, still going without textbooks...but because refer (possession charge) Gunnar Hand gets on the board and Ashley gets a swanky job with the city - They get their own exclusive school. Check the boundaries of who will be allowed to attend the school and pull up the google map of the part of the boundary east of Troost- it's mostly cemetery! All of the info is available on the KCPS website. Oh and check Ashley's comments on fox4... She seems to think she's our great white hope! F'ing "Waldonians" whine about everything yet always seem to get their way. Oh, I live in Waldo btw and have two children doing exceptionally well in KCPS schools *gasp* they even go to school with people of color!!!! We must be terrible parents! I was also for the Walmart Market after I learned the biggest fear of the neighborhood was the influx of people easy of Troost. Really sorry to see that plan fail. Would have been a great social experiment"

  2. Blacks have ACE. Why shouldn't whites have Hale Cook?

  3. 815 I was thinking that would be Brookside too. Also this broad sounds like she is another white guilt laden hypocrite. She is ragging on her "racist" neighbors as if she is somehow different. I suggest she move east of troost or shut her fuckin privileged pie hole.

  4. Another high and mighty that doesn't think she's high and mighty.

  5. If she really wants a great social experiment ..move on out to Ruskin heights, where I grew up.
You wouldn't stay long lady..dumb bitch.

  6. She/he sounds as stuck-up as the kcps board president.

  7. I bet her kids attend Border Star. NOT a typical KCPS school experience. White city folks crack me up.

  8. Those "school girls" in the photo look like 40 year old high school dropouts, at least in the face.

  9. Old college girls. That's how ALW likes them I hear. His current flame is pushing 40. I wonder if he will drop her when she turns 40 and no longer can breed.

  11. I know the tone of that voice. I would be willing to bet it's a Border Star/Lincoln parent, maybe FLA. The problem isn't neighborhood schools, the problem is a segregated culture built on fear and distrust. Stop putting that on people who want to have a neighborhood school. They are doing nothing wrong. My other bet is that the Hale Cook area would be very welcoming to a more ethnically integrated neighborhood--but they are not the only people involved in making that happen. This woman's tone is adding to the division, not doing anything to help it.

  12. I think Hale Cook is at 73rd & Pennsylvania. Also I'm not sure why the writer thinks people in Waldo are opposed to people of color since some of the people in Waldo ARE people of color. People in Waldo are opposed to crime, but we're equal opportunity on that one. We're equally opposed to thugs with and without color. I tend to agree with 8:55.

  13. I get what the poster is saying. What the real problem is the imaginary, or not so imaginary racial division line (Troost) in this city. I doubt this person lives in Waldo because I live in Waldo, also have my kids in the district and know very few people in our area who actually send their children to public school. I've lived all over the metro area, including east of troost, Parkville, independence, Paseo, off of Troost, Hyde Park... and I do love living in Waldo, it's a great community. I doubt this person has children at Border Star or Lincoln because that is where my children attend and we are a very tight community.

But I understand this person's frustration because it seems like a lot of money is being spent on a very small population of people, people whose children likely don't need as much help as some of their counterparts east of Troost. I get that frustration. But what opening our district to more families who, for whatever reason don't want to send their children to a school outside of their immediate area (Hartman on 81st and Oak for example) will actually bring in more money for the district over all.

I read some of Mrs. Hand's quotes and she did kind of sound like "the great white hope" in sound bites but if you sit down and discuss the plan, all the effort, and the community support and community partners she's made you will see her vision as holistic, not as separatist as it seems at first glance.,

  14. I think the efforts to reopen Hale Cook are a good thing, but those same efforts need to be extended to areas east of Troost. Do you know some elementary classes (in the NE area) have upwards of 40 kids in them?

Test scores dropped considerably after Covingtons closings. KCPS needs to do whatever they can to bring up test scores to avoid a state takeover (although I think a takeover is inevitable at this point). They may want to consider reopening more schools in other areas, as well.

  15. 4:11 is right on the money. Here's the thing; the District won't actually renovate and open the Hale Cook building unless they get enough kids enrolled. So that crazy "Waldo" parent is wrong.

There is nothing preventing other neighborhoods from undertaking this effort to reopen a moth-balled school. These people have worked hard for over two years, and are willing to help other communities undertake the same effort.

Kudos to Friends of Hale Cook for trying to come up with a great public option in their neighborhood. These are good people.

This will not take away anything from other KCPS schools; it will bring new families to the District (which only means more money for the District) and I don't see anyone else doing anything that would make that happen.

And Tony, you didn't attend public schools, and you don't have any kids, so why do you insist on demonizing people who are trying to find a way to keep the public schools from total collapse? I grew up near you, and my parents sent me to the public elementary schools. There is nothing wrong with wanting to send your kid to a neighborhood school to which they can walk.

  16. And for the last fucking time, we were not opposed to WalMart because of any "element"!!!!! WalMart meat and produce SUCKS, and Hen House has great products and operates great stores. And really, it is not the right location for any grocery store.

  17. FYI, Waldo is Gregory to 85Th St. Brookside is 55th (or maybe 59th) to Gregory. Both; State Line to Oak or maybe Rockhill Rd.

  18. Some of these comments crack me up.

Go Hale Cook! I put my name down for show of interest for my daughter. I am excited about the possibility of her being able to attend a neighborhood school, and this community has worked hard to reopen HC. Border Star is a great school too, so I would be happy if she was able to attend there just in case HC doesn't reopen.

Also, since Airick has been mentioned in these comments, I just have to say that while I find it admirable that he supports marriage equality, treating people equally, perhaps he should start in his own backyard with how he treats -or mistreats - the women in his life. He is so full of shit I can't even stand it anymore. Just come to my building downtown to hear the things this man does. He has no regard for anyone but himself. @@@@stepping down from high horse@@@@

    Go HC!!!

  19. 9:18. Let's hope it's for the last time. Of course the site is not perfect for a grocery store. Of course Hen House has good stuff--if you want to drive to JOCO to shop there. The site is perfect for just one thing--a deteriorating midcentury school building complete with boarded up windows, asbestos, lead paint, etc. Let's keep it as it is by all means. It's a credit to our neighborhood.

    And you are an asshole.

    ReplyDelete
  20. 7:09; I am not an asshole, but that's OK. I don't think it should be left as-is. Mostly I am sick of people assuming they understand everyone's motives. I really don't think most people in Waldo mind if there are a mixture of races or income levels at a grocery store. WalMart sucks; can't deny that. Surely there are other options besides WalMart or "keeping it as it is".

  21. 7:09--

No kidding, I don't know why people think that it is Walmart or nothing. They can and will tear the building down as they are doing other schools in the area. They even mentioned it in the last meeting; tearing down the school and holding onto the land for future use.
