That's polite-speak for decomposition and putrefaction - a natural, but rather grisly process that no 3 year-old should witness.
It is hard, even after decades of being professionally exposed to it, for a person to become fully inured to a body in such a state. (Police, M.E.'s/Coroners, Mortuary staff, etc.)
