An Open Letter To Mayor Sly James From Alonzo Washington
Greetings Mayor Sly James:
I hope all is well with you and yours and that 2013 brings you great success. When you were running for office you gave me a few phone calls to speak about issues in the community. It was very nice to hear from you back then and I hope that I will be able to hear back from you now that you are in office. I will try to be as brief as I can because I know that your schedule is busy.
The topic that I want to address with you is crime in KCMO. For over two decades I have fought crime in the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan area. As you may know, I have been successful in helping various law enforcement agencies solve a large amount of crimes and capture many murderers. This year in (2012) alone, tips that were generated from my crime fighting advocacy have helped police agencies solve 3 murder cases. Two of these murders took place in your city. The following are the crimes that I am speaking of:
* Shon & Renee Pernice Murder Case (Kansas City, MO) Shon= Killer / Renee - Victim
* Randy Stone & Pastor David Love - Love Triangle Murder Case (Independence, MO) Randy = Victim / Pastor Love = Killer.
* Charles Ray Bates & Eric Grimes Murder Case (Kansas City, MO) Charles = Victim / Eric = Killer
I have been able to get results in fighting crime and helping to capture killers with no funding from the city or anyone else. I think there is a reason why crime never seems to subside in KCMO. Too many city funded programs make zero impact in solving, preventing or addressing crime in any fashion. Every year there is over 100 murders in KCMO. The last time it was not 100 homicides in KCMO was when I organized a grassroots campaign called : "Don't Hate Lower the Murder Rate".
Therefore, I am writing you to tell you of the anti-crime efforts that I feel should be ended and where those funds need to go. Aim For Peace is a complete crime fighting failure. It does not prevent homicides. The community does not know who they are. One of their own members was murdered and the wasted funds going to it should be given to crime efforts that work. I met with the KCMO City Manager (Wayne Cauthen) when he was putting it together. I told him it would not work because criminals don't respect other criminals. Besides, the program does not work where it originated from (Chicago). Currently, Chicago, IL has 500 homicides. If it does not work in Chicago why would it work in KCMO?
The special crime commissions that are put together never work. People just talk about solutions that no one carries out. It's a pure waste of city resources and time. Groups like The Ad Hoc Group Against Crime receive a large amount of city funds but all they really do is pray with no results. They serve some purpose for making murder victim's families feel better. However, the fact that they solve no crimes and prevent no murders can't be ignored. Does prayer and lighting candles warrant thousands of dollars for this out of touch organization? Surely, they could receive less funding from the city for just praying with no impact on crime at all beyond talking to the press about the same old stuff with no new concepts to fight crime.
Furthermore, funding organizations to bring entertainers to town to speak to children about life skills and avoiding crime is a waste of money. The entertainers come to town, get a check and then they are gone. Nothing changes and sometimes they don't even show up. See Floyd Mayweather and Posse. Bill Cosby has been to Kansas City twice. Each year he came here he solved no crimes and the murder rate was still over 100 victims. The press covered the event but nothing changed as it relates to crime in KCMO. Flash with no substance won't solve crimes or prevent murders. Stars can't do anything with one speech to address this plight.
Since I have solved many crimes in your city and beyond I would like to share with you where I think more money should go to fight crime. The Tips Hotline should be funded to hire more people of color at their organization and have some cultural sensitivity training. The Tips Hotline works but lacks a connection with the Black community where most of the murders take place in your city. I have received a ton of complaints from friends and relatives of murder victims who claim the that White operators are rude to them and have even hung up on them when they where trying to give tips about a murder. Cultural sensitivity training and more people of color working for that organization would help the group solve more murders for sure. In addition, The Tips Hotline should be clear on the protocol a tipster has to follow in order to receive the reward for their tip. They also need to be clear on the amount of the reward that they are offering. Their is a lot of confusion in the community when The Tips Hotlines states that the reward is " up to $1000 ". I have spoken to many tipsters who say that they will never give a tip to The Tips Hotline again because they feel like they were cheated out of the reward.
Lastly, more training for the KCPD on how to serve the Black community better would increase cooperation from members of the urban core. Most African Americans don't want to work with the KCPD because many of them have been treated like second class citizens by one of them. This hinders the KCPD from gaining the urban core's trust and tips. I know if these suggestions were adhered to that it would make a impact in fighting crime unlike like all of the ineffective organizations & efforts that your city has wasted money funding. I hope that I will receive some feed back from you in 2013. Too many people are being killed in your city for you to continue to fund the same old organizations who can't do anymore than me (one guy with no funding) who is successful at solving crimes and getting people to give tips.

What's best about these suggestions is that they don't cost much and following the advice would be simple for the Mayor. Tony, don't forget to make sure to ask Alonzo Washington if the Mayor followed up on the letter. This is important.

In some instances, community involved policing worked in this city in the 90's, the funding was cut and we are back to an "us versuses them mentallity". Kcpd can't do it alone and neither can the neighborhoodds. The city needs leadership to mend this fence and get back to the business of partnering with the community to solve crime. This isn't rocket science and its not expensive, but it does take hard work and a willingness to listen. It kind of reminds me of the Chiefs and Pioli, NO SLY, YOUR NOT THE ONLY SMART GUY IN THE ROOM!

ReplyDeleteFirst, like him or not, his ideas are no worse than what is currently being done in KC. So I give him credit for at least trying to solve problems. The TIPS hotline use to be moved around from police agency to agency each h week and dispatchers would take the tips. I can see why a caller would be reluctant to give information to the dispatcher. So I agree, the phone should be answered by members of the black community where the majority of the crimes are occurring. Second, the TIPS hotline needs to evolve more into social media. Currently they use a wanted newspaper and some wanted pictures online but expand it to be completely online. Post surveillance videos, wanted person, and other clues to crimes and offer micro rewards like $50, $100 and so forth to generate tips. Maybe even a local version of America's Most Wanted played online and on cable channels weekly to reenact crimes to generate tips. Third, Aim4Peace and other groups do not prevent crimes. I was at a function last week where group members were present and people still fought in the street. Luckily nobody had a gun this time! Spend the money to generate jobs in the urban core. Even if it is picking up trash, clearing vacant lots, boarding up vacant building or a magnitude of other community projects, pay people $10 an hour and put young folks to work. The unemployment rate in the black community is 50% and contributes to crime. Lastly, KCPD does not reflect the community it serves. Just because they have a black police chief and black officers in uniform does not mean they are in touch with the community. KCPD needs to recruit better in the community to hire blacks, Asians, gays, lesbians,Hhispanics and other minorities and assign them to work in those areas where they can make the biggest impact.In addition, bring back funding for cops to live in the urban core. Currently the majority of the police force lives north of the river or in a neighborhoods that border Lee Summmit. How can they fix problems in the urban core when they leave at the end of their shift. In conclusion, if you want crime reduced in the city, focus on improving your police force, more educational or trade opportunities and jobs!

ReplyDeleteTo comment on Tony's posting the only thing I got out of Alonzo's rant is that everybody but him that gets paid to fight crime is a waste of money. Is this not his usual claim for a paycheck from anyone stupid enough to sign in the dotted line. Maybe its worth another 15 grand.
Chuck popped a gasket and frankly, who can blame him (although Chuck, you gotta rein in the hate. It detracts from your message.). Are we going to take seriously a comment that the TIPS hotline call takers who are white are putting off black callers? Is this the kind of crime fighting crap Alonzo is offering up?
ReplyDeleteSomeone earlier said get rid of Sim 4 Peace and Ad Hoc...couldn't agree more. These groups suck up dollars and offer zero results. Any group that has similar performance should be eliminated. And we don't need another cast off from COMBAT or commission formed. Get the police chief engaged in some meaningful conversations with neighborhoods and community leaders, NOT the usual grifters. Have some hard hitting discussion and develop some action plans that work. NOT Aim 4 Peace or other wasteful worthless payback schemes.
KC is great at throwing money at pointless and aimless answers. Lets focus on solid solutions and direct our dollars to those. Forget the patronage and the paybacks and the back scratching. Take our murder rate and our crime problem seriously!

1) Mr. Washington lives in Kansas and should keep his comments directed there.
2) Notice how he's all about inflating his ego (Mayor called me several times; "I'VE SOLVED" many crimes; been a crime fighter for 20 years; advised Wayne Cauthen; etc., ad nauseum) all the while constantly criticizing everyone else.
3) Alonzo has a long-standing history of mental illness and apparently that continues to remains a constant in his life. He actually believes that only he holds the answers to society's ills, that he is an unrecognized, unappreciated savior for KC. Think "Clay Chastain", another non-resident, to the exponential degree of lunacy.
Of all the messages on here, remember the "Alonzo has a LONG STANDING HISTORY OF MENTAL ILLNESS." There it is, in a nutshell...Alonzo is just another crazy NIGGER!!
ReplyDeleteWell, I skimmed through that, but didn't bother to read any of it very closely. I just wanted everyone to see that Chuck has an agenda & its not the 'truth'. He used to be a teacher & now he works construction. I blame alcoholism, which probably was brought about by self-medicating PTSD. Chuck is a Vietnam Veteran. He is proof that all soldiers are wounded. I hope that we do a better job with the Iraqi & Afghan Veterans. At least, no one is spitting on them & calling them 'baby killers'. 'Support the troops' especially when they come home.

You state that Chuck used to be a teacher and now works in construction. IF that is true, so what? Does it make Chuck's points less valid? Maybe Chuck got tired of low pay and even lower respect in the teaching profession. You insinuate the career change to be a bad thing.

I have seen you post that you are disabled and unable to work because you are sight impaired. Your implication is that all sight impaired people are unable to work. In actuality, I know quite a few sight impaired people, and many others, some with multiple disabilities, who work and support themselves and do not live on government handouts.
One thing I agree with you about: we should treat our veterans better. I think we should treat all of the men and women in our military better.
As for Alonzo...he's full of crap.

ReplyDeleteDisabled people work, hold jobs at all levels, make various amounts of money and are often success. Many, unlike you, do not rely on government handouts. They are STILL disabled. Being capable does not make their disability go away. It just means these people are industrious, creative individuals with strength, courage and perseverance.
You have a lot to learn Byron. Rather than sit at home and comment on a blog about issues in a city that doesn't concern you, why don't you focus on improving your life, attitude and life skills so that you can find gainful employment and quit taking government handouts? Rather than name call, why don't you channel your energies into self improvement? If you like KCMO so much, read up on some of our disabled citizens who have a list of civic and career accomplishments; you might learn something.
You don't have to sit at home and earn nothing and take from the government. You have choices. Exert some energy. Focus less on the Chuck's of the world, which you can't change, and more on yourself, which you can.
