Today there's some follow-up reporting on the subject of increasing Downtown Kansas City violence . . .
Gunfire in a downtown parking garage early Sunday wounded a 32-year-old Lee’s Summit woman who was an innocent bystander, Kansas City police said today.
And this is what "density" in Kansas City looks as we continue to mistakenly believe that trendy people and condos will solve Kansas City problems.

ReplyDeleteI'd like to know what the real antipathy ("hatred") is in this little internet circle is, towards the downtown residents? I doubt if I will ever get an actual honest objective answer here. But it's very obvious that there is some kind of personal animosity towards the downtown residents among many of you people. And it's obvious in that, whenever something even remotely bad news happens downtown, it becomes a blanket "indictment" of the people who live downtown. What is the real deal with you people? Can anyone here give an honest, objective answer?
ReplyDeleteI don't believe its towards the residents of downtown but more towards the local government that pushed all the money invested down our throats just to have the.crime spread downtown. Obviously not from the downtown residents but from the criminal element moving that way. The local government refuses to acknowledge this and do anything about it.
ReplyDeleteI don't have any problems with downtown residents at all. In fact, I wish our downtown would thrive like Austin or Chicago. The people I don't like are our "urban" residents from the East side who come there and ruin everybody's good time. Then again, they ruin everything everywhere they go.

ReplyDeleteThank you both for your input. I do seem to think that there are some out there though, who have some antipathy towards the downtown residents and the "community" and efforts in general.
ReplyDeleteBased on my observations, I think downtown KC is doing much better today than it was 10 years ago. Back in the 1990's, it was in pretty sad shape and largely vacant. While yes, there are still problems and challenges, and things could always be improved, downtown is much better today.
As for this nightclub shooting, I don't think this is an indictment of downtown, or an explicit indication of a growing crime problem. Nightclubs at 3:00 AM are breeding grounds for trouble, regardless of where they are. The best advice is to be home and off the streets at that hour.
One of the great things about the KC metro is the very wide variety of different kinds of places to live. And each person's choice is their own business.
ReplyDeleteWhat gets tiresome and is pretty silly is the constant rah rah about how swell downtown is and all the progress that's being made and that in no time we'll be back in the 1950s and everyone will be flocking downtwon to shop and be entertained. Less than 10% of the jobs in the metro are downtown and most of those are with one level of government or another. And in a metro with 2.3 million residents, around 19,000 actually live downtown. And due to the relentless pressure from downtown property owners, Chamber swells, TIF bond law firms, developers, and construction companies, there have been hundreds of millions of public dollars poured into downtown KCMO with very little positive effect.
Is it better than 10 years ago? Maybe.
Is it hundreds of millions of dollars better? Not even close.
KCMO city government needs some context and priorities.

ReplyDeletePeople should remember the now gone Bannister mall...The downtown living and venues are well on their way to following suite of Bannister Mall with people running for their lives on weekends (which they have and are) I bet the suburban bars and clubs are loving this shit!
I used to live in a over priced loft downtown, now I live in a overpriced apt in the suburbs, but at least I will live to see tomorrow:)
