Deputy Chief Berardi appointed interim chief
The City of Kansas City, Mo., announced Monday, July 23 that KCFD Deputy Chief Paul Berardi has been selected as the interim chief for the KCFD. Chief Berardi will assume his new responsibilities on Tuesday, July 31 after Chief Richard "Smokey" Dyer retires from KCFD.
"The City can take great confidence in the experience and expertise that Chief Berardi brings to the position," said City Manager Troy Schulte. "He is a great example of the depth of quality leadership that exists within KCFD."
With more than 26 years of service with KCFD, Chief Berardi has served the past 11 years as deputy chief and has led the Professional Development Bureau, Medical Bureau and most recently served as a designated shift commander responsible for KCFD Emergency Service Operations citywide during designated operating periods.
Chief Berardi holds an associate degree in fire science from Metropolitan Community College, a bachelor's degree in business administration from Baker University and a Master of Public Administration from UMKC's Bloch School of Management. He was selected in 2004 for a fellowship at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government to attend the Senior Executive in State and Local Government Program.

Berardi is no one's puppet. He understands the KCFD is a part of the city, not opposition to it. Smokey always had the "divide and conquer" mentality. He put KCFD at odds with city management when there was no reason for the fire department to be in that position.
ReplyDeleteBerardi is a solid pick. I hope they do a national search, though, and look at candidates with solid ambulance experience. Smokey sucked in that area, among most others.

ReplyDeleteThe use of the words "management" and "city", when applied to KCMO is an oxymoron of the first degree. There's no planning, management, priorities, or accountability for anything.
ReplyDeleteThey left out the part about how just before he was made shift commander he "led" the Medical Bureau right into the cluster fuck failure we have today then quit "leading" because he had no idea what he was doing.
ReplyDeleteI would like to see Jeff Grote as the new Fire Chief. He's still a firefighters chief instead of a yes man to the council. Of course Schulte will want Berardi because he knows he can dangle his puppet strings and get what he wants without a good fight. I've got 20 yrs on the job and seen them both work and Grote would be the best choice./ JMO!
