TKC BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE NEWS!!! DESPERATE FOR CASH KANSAS CITY PREPARES TO SELL NAMING RIGHTS TO CONVENTION & ENTERTAINMENT VENUES!!!
The level of corporate influence over Kansas City is only getting worse and now some of our favorite local places will remind us of this tragic fact of life.
A rather KICK-ASS TKC TIPSTER tells us . . .
"Not sure if you saw this, but the convention center and downtown auditoriums have their naming rights up for sale."
Check the link that offers a guide to buying co-opting and thereby destroying Kansas City History.
And here's a screenshot . . .
Sadly, selling corporate naming rights is a longstanding trend among municipalities desperate for cash. I'm trusting residents to politely decline to use the corporate name . . . Also, if Kansas City elected officials are auctioning off Kansas City . . . I'm hoping Burns & Mac will at least pony up a bit of cash to name the lame Dowtown "Toy Train" Streetcar.
DEVELOPING . . .
Won't raise much cash. Bidding starts at about three fiddy.
ReplyDeleteOnly KCMO would have staff that was so useless that they'd have to hire a consultant to figure out how to sell naming rights. Geesh, what do employees do there besides turn Oxygen into carbon dioxide?
ReplyDeleteHello... This is normal in EVERY city. What is the point?
ReplyDeleteName it after Beth.
ReplyDeleteI'll bet there'll be a line to buy the rights to Kemper!
ReplyDeleteIn fact, which buildings are they talking about?
Who cares, but I do agree that it is strange they have to hire a consultant to tell them how to do it. Why not just call a couple of cities that have done it and go from there?

The H&R Block trash department -What can we find for you?. The Hallmark police department - When you care enough to send the very best. OK, that's a stretch but advertising is mostly lies so why not?
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly why governments are so inefficient. They send out bid proposals for a company to consult on bid proposals. Of course the alternative to bidding is corruption so either way the taxpayer pays extra.
ReplyDeleteWhat third world, child labor-dominated, Wal-Mart supplier will David Glass sell the naming rights to Kauffman Stadium to?
ReplyDeleteYou folks really do not think Glass will have the character to protect an honor bestowed on a man who called that scum-sucker a friend when the scum-sucker could profit from erasing Mr. K's memory?
Mr. K did a lot of things for this community and David Glass just takes cash out of it.
Um, businesses hire consultants for things outside their area of expertise all the time. Or maybe you'd prefer the city just wing it and hope for the best. But hey, I'm impressed that there are so many naming rights experts on TKC! Who knew?
ReplyDeleteMan's gotta do what he's gotta do.
ReplyDeleteYou people are stupid. Kauffman stadium is not even owned by the city.
ReplyDeletePerhaps a new name for Westport in honor of the storied history of KC's own Bob Burdella?
ReplyDeleteCommerce and history can mix.
Businesses hire consultants all the time, but they tend to hire people who actually have some ability and expertise, not the same old insiders form city hall over and over again.
ReplyDeleteAnd you have to ask why just about every department at city hall needs a pr flack to try to explain why the services are so crappy and the attitude of the employees you have to deal with is so bad.
Wouldn't we all be better off is the management just did a better job and tried to have some credibility instead of all the dog-and-pony shows?
Mr. Tony,
ReplyDeleteHow does TKC Arena sound? Let's start collecting aluminum cans today.
It's not so much that they hire a consultant but how much they pay. For this gig I would think that ten grand should cover it. All potential buyers want to know is how many direct and indirect impressions they are going to get in each media category.
ReplyDeleteFunkhouser Auditorium.....
ReplyDeleteonly if the consulting contract goes to G.Squitiro and Associates.
ReplyDeleteKCFD sounds good!
ReplyDelete@825. Glad to see shitty employees blogging at work. Or are you just getting up to roll into city hall around 10?
