  3. Tony, did you notice those kids said that we should support Google Fiber for the west side?

  4. Heck Time Warner Turbo $44.95 a month is a bargain compared to this. I thought Google would at least be competitive.

  5. Keep in mind Google has a reputation for being pretty half assed in just about everything they do anymore these days.

  6. So they are going to spend a billion to to hook up 500 people? LOL

  7. Buh bye Time Warner.

4:53? Google Fiber will be over 45 times faster than Time Warner "Turbo". Turbo is about 20Mbps, while Google Fiber will be over 900Mbps.

Also 4:53, "turbo" isn't Time Warners fastest offering. They have "Ultimate" for $79.99/month. And Time Warner "Ultimate" only has a speed of 50Mbps. Google fiber blows Time Warner away in both speed and price for internet service.

  9. In Stanford, where Google is offering 1 Gbps fiber in conjunction with Sonic.net, the company is offering users free service for one year after users pay $250 for professional installation -- or $50 for an install kit. Granted, Google's interest in these communities isn't to make a killing on broadband (though they obviously would like to profit), it's using those networks as test beds for next-generation ad and tracking technologies while gathering data on real-world subscriber broadband use.

  13. The hype is ludicrous Tech is just a small sector of the economy. Obviously the information economy isn't making us all rich at this point and Google Fiber isn't going to save the economy either.

  14. A Google spokeswoman said that “at the end of seven years, we will begin charging the market price for comparable speeds—which, if Google Fiber is successful, will be $0.”

    ROFLMAO

  15. And this is a good reminder that when people talk about Google spending time and money on wacky side projects like goofy goggles and robot cars, it would be good to at least mention that the same company is wiring an entire metropolitan area with fiber, just to see what it would be like.

  16. "just to see what it would be like."

They want to be a cable company. That is a tough biz.

  17. Stop hating and sign up now. Your porn will run faster.

  18. 6:39 PM Sure it will be $0 once Google figures out a way to sell and deliver zillions of ads and exploit peoples personal and private information and surfing habits for profit.

  19. Not available in my area even though I live in Kansas City. WTF?

  20. Can Methtown get it?

  21. Elephant in the room not mentioned... the Northland? 40% of the KCMO population, probably 1/2 the tax base.
