SPECIAL TAXING DISTRICT SCHEME WIN!!! DESPICABLE TACTICS FROM MAYOR SLY AND THE CITY COUNCIL MOVE THIS BROKE-ASS TOWN CLOSER TO GETTING A DOWNTOWN KANSAS CITY TOY TRAIN!!!

An upcoming move by the Mayor and City Council is perfectly legal but it still stinks and will cost this town for years to come:

Kansas City streetcar taxing district plan can advance, judge rules

Just a few fun facts for the afternoon . . .

THIS PLAN TO ATTRACT PEOPLE TO DOWNTOWN KANSAS CITY WITH A SHINY, EXPENSIVE, NEW TOY ALREADY FAILED TWICE!!!

Examples in case you were wondering . . .

THE SPRINT CENTER HOSTS ONLY CRAPPY CONCERTS AND POLITICOS LIED ABOUT GETTING A PRO TEAM!!! ALSO . . . THE P&L DISTRICT IS FAMOUS ONLY FOR RACIAL DISCRIMINATION AND THE BREAKING THIS TOWN'S BUDGET!!!

The experts who claim the Downtown Toy Train will generate "BILLIONS" didn't offer other information other than their opinion. And I didn't hear any info about WHO WAS PAYING THEM TO SPEAK (????) . . . Again, these economic theories have been proven incorrect by Kansas City's history and cruel financial reality.

Regarding our so-called local leaders and their screwed up priorities . . .

SHAME ON MAYOR SLY AND THE CITY COUNCIL FOR MOVING FIRST TO BUILD THIS EXPENSIVE AND FRIVOLOUS TOY TRAIN RATHER THAN WORKING ON THIS TOWN'S 2012 HOMICIDE SPIKE OR MAYBE FIXING OUR OLD AND BUSTED INFRASTRUCTURE!!!

And when it comes to the method . . .

THE SPECIAL TAXING DISTRICT VOTE MIGHT BE LEGAL BUT IT'S ALSO A DESPICABLE TACTIC GIVEN THAT, IN THE LONG RUN, ALL OF KANSAS CITY WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS NIGHTMARE WITH ONLY A FEW FOLKS VOTING ON IT!!!

Why should Kansas City trust our local government on promises that this toy train won't turn into a fiasco? KC has heard political lies about development projects over and over again. Kansas City is addicted to wasting taxpayer cash and the lame argument that "this time it will be different" doesn't hold the water from this town's old and busted pipes.

LUCKILY TKC AND A FEW TAXPAYER ADVOCATES HAVE A SOLUTION FOR THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL'S ATTEMPT TO RAILROAD VOTERS . . . STAY TUNED ON SATURDAY MORNING FOR A REALLY GREAT IDEA THAT WILL HELP VOTERS STAND UP TO THIS ECONOMIC BULLYING FROM CITY HALL!!!

But I digress . . .

Here's a quick prediction that will be proven correct over time: There will be a huge cost overrun for this project and eventually all of Kansas City will be forced to pay for a train that goes NOWHERE.

  1. Damn you sir, I disagree.

  2. They don't want a lot of people voting on this...the past has proven it. Every time we've had a "light rail/toy train" option on the ballot it's been defeated. Now the thinking seems to be just a few people might pass this thing.

  3. I'll tell you why we don't have pro sports teams at the Sprint Center. 1) If we acquired a basketball team, KU will be in an uproar since they would be diverting the basketball market, err, fans away from Lawrence. And hockey? We got a hockey franchise already: Missouri Mavericks. Granted it's minor league, but still popular nonetheless.

Business is business, why invest large when mediocrity generates revenue?

    Mr. Tony,
You are perfectly right in your ASSESSMENT of the devious machinations of this current council. After the foolishness of the Funkhouser years I had hoped for so much better from this current crop of individuals. This group is now making John Sharp look good. A public vote on this singularly insipid faux-transit idea will fail. Thank goodness.

I was going to berate you on YOUR failure to keep vows IE- beefy men in scanty thongs. hm-mm, I guess there are just too many other issues. I will have to bear with the Jordan Carver pics until you come to your senses and follow through on your previous promise

  5. This town is corn fed and brain dead.

  6. The scheme to limit the vote to as few people as possible, though underhanded, may very well work, but then the question becomes how can a small number of residents and businesses possibly pay to build, run, and maintain this "touristy frou frou"?
Of course, the answer is, they can't and this will become yet another downtown drain on the general fund which already is bleeding dollars for such things as the P&L District, Citadel Plaza, and all the other amateur real estate losers the folks at 12th and Oak have congratulated themselves about over the years.
So when you hear the scare tactics and weeping over the city budget, closing community centers, laying off police and firefighters, streets that can't afford to be fixed, and all the rest, just keep decisions like this in mind
    A city that works.
    Just not for you.

  7. what a waste. this is ANOTHER reason to move to the suburbs.

  8. I hope Sly is happy. He has completely sold out all of Kansas City except for his developer friends and campaign donors.

  9. every once in awhile I totally agree with SOS.

    He's right on this one.

  10. It'll be fun!

  11. "Despicable?". Really Tony, isn't that a bit dramatic? The Council and Mayor are following the law on the creation of a transportation development district. This is the way they are set up and operated. Nothing despicable or underhanded going on. They are following proper procedure.

    ReplyDelete
  12. That "procedure" is based on getting past a vote of all the people. Councilman Russ Johnson knows he would lose if all of KC had to vote on this.

I don't always agree with this but he's being nice when he calls it despicable.

  13. SOS always makes sense to me. Smartest blogger on here.

  14. I like the concerts at the Sprint Center! Would much rather have that than a pro team. Besides, KU would be whiiiiniiiiing!!!

  15. Sly is making kc broke.

  16. JC, let's educate you, shall we? TDDs can only be legally formed by the registered voters living within the TDD. KS-based property owners can't vote, unless their registered voting address is within the TDD. The procedure is not based on getting around anything. It's the legal way to do this. TDDs are in other parts of the country, and in KC, and this is how they work. You might not personally like the players, but they are following the law.

  17. Wow! Sly gives Obama a run for his money in the brain dead department. Think what Sly could do with the national budget of he can fuck the KC budget up this bad.

  18. The sprint center puts on great concerts!

  19. 9:08-while I don't pretend to speak for JC, I understood his comment to mean that he believes the choice to use a TDD to fund the streetcar, as opposed to a city-wide vote on an alternate funding mechanism, is intended to limit the vote to a select group of voters and circumvent a general vote by all of the citizens of Kansas City.

Also, I don't see anywhere in his comments where he pleads or bleeds for Ks-based property owners. In fact, he specifically references only KC voters.

And yes, the TDD advocates are following the law on how TDDs are established. But I believe the question being raised is whether or not a TDD, with it's self-selected and limited voter pool, is an appropriate mechanism to fund the street car, as opposed to a different mechanism that affords all Kansas City citizens an opportunity to vote on the matter.

  20. All KC should be allowed to vote since all in the end will pay.

  21. The Sprint Center plays all genres of music, well mainstream, so you must not like any music tony. what do you like, Reggay?
