Kansas City's 2012 homicide spike is the most important problem facing our city despite mainstream media focus on weather reporting or local celebrity connections.
One of the most troubling aspects of Kansas City's struggle to curb the number of local homicides is the sad fact that far too many people refuse to stand up and cooperate with police or even talk about this town's violence and murder problem.
Clueless reactionaries evoke grandiose theories about a "culture of violence" but it has been long proven that a "culture of silence" is far more effective at leading so many people to their death. Kansas City's elite have mastered the art of politely ignoring uncomfortable subjects and that attitude has influenced this town's culture just as much as any other factor.
All of this has to change.

MAYOR SLY MUST TAKE A STAND OR AT LEAST ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT THE REPEATEDLY TROUBLING ANTICS OF HIS SON KYLE JAMES THAT NOW INCLUDE REPORTS OF THE YOUNG MAN FLASHING GANG SIGNS DURING A BAR FIGHT!!! ANYTHING LESS IS AN ENDORSEMENT OF THE SILENCE THAT PLAGUES OUR COMMUNITY AND ALLOWS KANSAS CITY MURDERS AND VIOLENCE TO GO UNSOLVED!!!
Nobody asked Sly James to run for the office of Mayor. Mayor Sly James must remember the scrutiny endured by his predecessor that now almost seems quaint compared to the scary subject of gang affiliation and late night brawling reports facing his son. It's not unfair to ask the Mayor if these repeated reports about the bad boy antics of Kyle James affect his credibility.
ALL OF KANSAS CITY WONDERS: IF THE MAYOR CAN'T LEAD HIS OWN SON AWAY FROM VIOLENCE THAN HOW CAN HE INFLUENCE LOCAL SCHOOLS OR EFFECTIVELY ADDRESS THIS TOWN'S HORRIFIC HOMICIDE COUNT?!?!?!
Brief aside to keep things light . . .
Since we're talking about confessionals when it comes to ALLEGEDLY breaking the law. After repeated warnings I recently got a ticket for driving like a D-BAG. While I'm a lot older than Kyle James this should still make my mom mad because I was driving her car. The officer who gave me the ticket told me that the decidedly rare neighborhood stop was because of complaints (probably about me) from nearby houses about people running a Westside stop sign . . . On this blog I'm reminding myself and making a pledge that I'm gonna TRY VERY HARD to stop driving like a D-BAG despite the fact that (unfortunately) it's my natural state. Most of my other shortcomings (that aren't criminal but still rather sessy) involve consenting big booty white women and they're really nobody's business. Oh yeah, almost forgot: That hit man from a credit card company looking for me seems to have finally lost interest. (Hehe, unintentional pun!!!)
But I digress . . .
Mayor Sly has an opportunity to show a bit of leadership when it comes to recent headlines regarding his son's antics:
Fox4: According to sources, Kyle James was allegedly drunk, belligerent and using gang signs around 3:00 a.m. on Friday morning near the Brooksider Bar. Witnesses say that James picked a fight with a man who was a self-described martial arts expert, who then took off his shirt and stood face-to-face with James before kicking him several times in the face and head.

There's hope that Mayor Sly can address this uncomfortable and ongoing problem in a way that might inspire the rest of Kansas City to confront criminal activity, alleged or otherwise. Anything less from our Mayor would waste a chance to lead Kansas City in standing up to gangs, violence and substance abuse. In fact, if the Mayor continues to snap at anyone who asks questions about Kyle, it would only demonstrate that petty politics, damage control and public relations is of primary concern to our elected officials rather than the safety of our families and residents.

I am surprised that the guy who got hit with the lamp at the hotel isn't re-thinking his postion, claiming he has been living in fear, and now presses charges and sues.

What's a Dad to do? He could get him out of town, where he can be anonymous. The problem is that if Dad does that then he has no supervision of him at all. I know, I know. He doesn't seem to be able to control him now, but no telling what would happen if Dad weren't around. At least people know him and the police are not gonna shoot him in Kansas City for being a jerk. Somewhere else, he may die.

ReplyDeleteHa, somebody must've been watching a Rocky marathon...I worked in all types of bars and it doesn't matter the ethnic, religious, socioeconomic or gender makeup of the group...its usually the smallest person in the group that gets his/her friends involved in a fight. And the larger the group of friends the higher the likelihood of conflict.
