In yet another meandering column that struggles to find a point . . .
MARY SANCHEZ BLAMES SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE PUBLIC FOR THE TRAYVON MARTIN HOT MESS!!!
There are a million opinions she could have hatched but she chose what's probably the worst angle . . .
It's kinda sad but still reflective of what's going on at The Star that Mary Sanchez has consistently directed blame toward online discourse and the Internets when it comes to uncomfortable subject matter that she's too timid to really address.
Sadly, Mary Sanchez seems to long for the days when columnists and pundits had the last word but now the discussion is dominated by anony d-bags i.e. the public.
Nevertheless . . . Placing blame on the public when it comes to the Trayvon story is just an inaccurate conclusion given that the controversy has clearly been put on blast by the mainstream media who demonstrate their lack of priorities at nearly every turn.
We all know the silly media circus was the result of grieving parents getting taken advantage of by professional grifters and snakeoil salesman who saw this as an opportunity to extract some coin from the public coffers.
ReplyDeleteI think Tony, for whatever reason has a real vendetta gainst Mary Sanchez.
ReplyDeleteWhatever, it's his blog and if she pissed him off, then so be it...
That said, Ms. Sanchez's article was actually worth a read in my opinion. It was a rationale and reasonable look at the news, and how the agenda changes with not only the players in the Main Stream Media, but in our interpretations of the story itself, tinctured as it were by our own subjectivity.
In no way an earth shattering revelation, but one that we would do well to remember whilst the fires of stupidity and hate destroy our house of common sense.
That point, reinforced at the end, Sanchez says,
"The rest of us can choose to remain open-minded, or we can ferret around between fact and fiction attempting to build a version of truth that feels comfortable."
Fact as opposed to fiction, my "ferretted" friends is no longer the elusive, mysterious and unnattainable grail it was not so very long ago.
The crux of Tony's criticism is, I believe here,
"Problem is, that careful language is easily overshadowed by screaming blog postings, entertainers on radio and TV, people with agendas, poor reporting and the Web’s ability to give stature to myth."
Tony is right, by default and opposed to his own agenda.
The truth will come out, and it wil come out by way of Mary's vehicle (The KC STar), Tony's blog, TV, Radio, pissed of white boys (Me.), pissed off liberals (Pretty much everybody else, including Spike Lee and the Black Panthers.) and the endless efforts of all concerned with the truth when it comes to race.
The incessant, implacable vetting of the facts of the case will at some point lead to a general concensus of what happened and why with Trayvon for MOST reasonable people.
And that folks, is a good thing.
The Main Stream Media's hands are now slipping from around our throats and must consider the truth before proclaiming thier own agenda and truth, to be ours as well.
It is in not.
I think Mary has a given us a good read today, imo.
I don't blame social media, I blame the state attorney. The investigating officer wanted to file manslaughter charges, the state attorney said no. The courtroom is the proper venue to discover what happened.
ReplyDeleteWe could blame these guys, but we won't we will sweep this under the rug.

Byron- Here's how it works.
ReplyDeleteThe investigator looks at the facts and tells the State's Attorney that in general terms, as he sees the case from 50,000 feet, the best charge the facts will support is a manslaughter charge.
The State's Attorney looks at the case more closely, considers the fine detail of the facts in light of the fine details of the law, as well as the practicality of getting a conviction, and decides if he wants to put any of his offices' limited resouces into trying to prepare and argue a very weak case that will no doubt have a ferocious defense and that will have truly little impact even if he wins. On the other hand, are those resouces better applied to other more serious or compelling cases. What is the opportunity cost?
So this isn't a conflict between the investigator's opinion of the case and the State Attorney's view. Rather, it's a matter of perspective, roles and judgement.
Nothing Mary Sanchez writes is worth reading. She's either pandering or is so far off the mark, her columns are worthless. She refuses to write about real news, even when it's handed to her. She must be on staff to fill a quota, because she certainly does a lousy job of filling pages.
ReplyDeleteI don't think TKC has a vendetta against her. He's just speaking out about poor writing and a waste of space when it comes to someone who is supposed to be giving a Hispanic focus to things. The Star needs to fire Sanchez... they won't, but they need to.
