Don't get it twisted . . . It's not a defense of silly, juvenile racist blogging (without any cheeky TKC charisma) but he seems to really address a scary example of the overreaching power that even minor public officials can wield.

Chuck, 'free speech' is an American idea. Other countries don't see it that way: In Germany, its a crime to deny the 'Holocaust'. They don't consider it a matter of opinion, or a topic for debate. Its considered hate speech.

I suppose in Germany, having a jape at the expense of dead Jews is tatamount to "Fire in the theater."
The restriction of free speech, anywhere in the world, is, imo, a sign of a repressive and Orwellian society that fears it's citizens.

ReplyDeleteAlso don't forget - slander, character defamation, libel, threats, etc. are not protected by the "freedom of speech", and folks (even kids) can be prosecuted for them.
A good lesson for the kids: when you put something out there where other folks can see it and have your name linked to it in any way, don't be shocked or "victimized" when you are called on the carpet and there are repercussions for your actions.

ReplyDeleteCummon guys, these are 17 yr old guys. They do stupid things. Do you really think that they should lose a high school education over this?
ReplyDeleteWere they wrong? Yes. Were they incredibly stupid? Yes. Can we live with two 17 year olds who act out? Yes.
When they are 30, they will look back and groan. Didn't you?
