You couldn't tell by watching mainstream media, but last night was THE GRAND KICK-OFF of Kansas City's Kwanzaa celebration at the historic Gem Theater.
There was an AWESOME and enthusiastic crowd for the celebration that combines heritage with politics and community.

Again, the theme was impressive . . .
"Celebrating the International Year for people of African descent"
Notice the music and you'll hear a Latino Samba beat from Brazil . . . A nation, the speaker noted, which has a majority Black population. The speaker highlighted the International flavor of this year's celebration that seemed to be embraced by the crowd.

Make no mistake . . . This 30th Annual Celebration is now a major part of Kansas City's culture.
Former Council member Sharon Sanders Brooks was there and current 3rd District Councilman Jermaine Reed was also a member of the audience.
Looking at this morning's headlines, it's a shame that mainstream media has mostly ignored this Kansas City cultural celebration in much the same way they consistently slight most of the urban core.

ReplyDeleteKwanzaa sounds like a made up holiday because IT IS a made up holiday. It was made up in 1966 by some loon who wanted an "official" African American holiday. Guess St. Paddy's was too much for him. Maulana Karenga was the black nationalist brain behind Kwanzaa. It's a crack up that the third of the seven so-called principles of this half-baked holiday is "collective work and responsibility". Not working too well on the east side is it? But it's reported that Kwanzaa celebrations have leveled off and declined in recent years, so maybe that explains it. Today the holiday seems to be the chance for the unemployed and crooked (Sharon Sanders Brooks) and the over employed and crooked (Jermaine Reed) to gather and yell racial messages into a shrinking crowd, trying to stay relevant.
