CONGRESSMAN CLEAVER LEADS TOP BLACK BUSINESS LEADERS AT WHITE HOUSE
Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II, organized a first-of-its-kind meeting at the White House with about a dozen top African American business leaders from around the country, including Kansas City's Ollie Gates. The purpose was to discuss jobs and economic ideas with the President.
"These are men and women who know what they are talking about when it comes to creating and sustaining jobs," says Congressman Cleaver. "Together they have thousands of people working in their companies and I wanted them to get the chance to talk to the President directly about their ideas when it comes to getting this economy back on track."
Discussion topics included access to capital, treatment of small businesses and public finance issues. Kansas City businessman and President of Gates BBQ, Ollie Gates, was in the small group meeting with President Barak Obama. For longer than four decades Gates has been the major stockholder and President of his family-run organization, Gates BBQ. There are now six restaurants in the metro area.
He suggested changes to bring new interests and incentives for businesses and customers to come back into the urban core.
"The meeting went very well and the President seemed interested in what we all had to say,” says Mr. Gates. “While other people in Washington are arguing about what to do concerning this economy and jobs, I appreciate that Congressman Cleaver is going out and trying to get it done."
The unemployment rate in Missouri is 8.5% and higher for African Americans. Representing Missouri's Fifth District and as Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, Congressman Cleaver hopes this will be the start of many such forums. The meeting took place on Tuesday and lasted about 45 minutes with the President.
"We must get hard-working men and women back on the job so they can stay in their homes and feed their families," says Rep. Cleaver. "Turning to those who are experts in their field is a must to bring about new ideas, new innovations and new energy."
Congressman Cleaver made introductory remarks at the meeting and following the discussion with the President asked the White House to consider and follow-up on each suggested proposal.
