KANSAS CITY HAS FINALLY FINISHED THE HONEYMOON WITH MAYOR SLY JAMES!!!
This is good for two reasons . . .
1. We can now enter a more productive debate and discussion with our most important elected official.
b. Most rational Kansas City political observers note that Mayor Sly came through his first major controversy relatively unscathed politically.
For the most part, the foibles of Kyle James are silly but not really important . . . No matter how nasty.
Even yesterday's revelation that Mayor Sly has another son who ran afoul of the law might not hurt him. Yesterday, Alonzo Washington raised some early and interesting questions about Mayor Sly's son as well. An additional shout out for this factoid should go to TKC Commenters with confirmation from the most AWESOME OF TKC TIPSTERS . . .
Still . . .
MAKE NO MISTAKE THAT MAYOR SLY'S FAMILY ENCOUNTERS WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT ARE IMPORTANT IF ONLY BECAUSE THE QUESTION OF "CREDIBILITY" ALWAYS ARISES WHEN WE TALK CRIME!!!
Furthermore . . .
PERSONALLY, I DON'T THINK THIS NEGATIVELY IMPACTS MAYOR SLY'S ADMINISTRATION AT ALL BUT ONLY THE POLITICALLY NAIVE WILL CLAIM THAT IT WON'T BE USED AS A TALKING POINT!!!
There has even been a bit of pushback from some people who would rather this information be kept out of the public eye as if the personal lives of politicos and their families aren't regularly mainstream media news fodder. Examples: Billy Carter, Roger Clinton and Jeb Bush's daughter.
On the neighborhood level . . . Kansas City conversations about crime are always reduced to silly kitchen sink fighting and the trivial.
But let's look at the far more important policy debate . . .
There's a growing argument that Mayor Sly already has a tense relationship with the KCPD. There is merit to this position but there's no need to drag Mayor Sly's sons into the debate to prove this point. Mayor Sly is at odd with police over pension issues and the City's Health Insurance plan . . . Police will RIGHTFULLY notice that they aren't getting the same special treatment that Local 42 has received at City Hall. These are important policy debates and preventing crime as a top priority of the City versus the mess that KCFD has made of the City's ambulance service or the one or two fires put out every month will be called into question.
What's even more interesting . . .
IT SEEMS THAT CONSERVATIVES NO LONGER UNILATERALLY LOVE MAYOR SLY SIMPLY BECAUSE OF HIS MARINE CREDENTIALS!!!
For many so-called Conservatives the apology of Kyle James simply wasn't enough and the "culture war" in their own mind is far more important than any other reality. I'm interested to see the reaction, if any from Chris Merrill's listeners and a lot Darla Jaye's people have already mistakenly come to the conclusion that the behavior of Mayor Sly's younger son in the P&L District has something/anything to do with his administration.
So, dealing with the politics and policy regarding the KCPD along with constant reactionary backlash against any Black dude in charge now confront Mayor Sly as we THANKFULLY move beyond the Honeymoon pleasantries of Kansas City politics and into real debate that, unfortunately, hits close to home.
Funkhouser's honeymoon only lasted a week.

ReplyDeleteSly's problems with the police department stem from City Hall perpetually treating the police department like second class citizens in their own city. The give one public safety department (KCFD) to pay raises and increased benefits, while cutting the budget of another public safety department (KCPD) by $15 million, allowing no pay increases, no COLAs, no benefit increases, and forcing them into a health insurance plan that includes higher premiums for worse coverage. Then the Mayor comes in and rubs salt in the wound by saying, "Just deal with it!"

Just being fair, and even handed when dealing with the police department will go a long, long way with the men and women of that department. Mayor, if you want them to be "part of the team" you have to remember that "we all work for the citizens." So, don't treat them like second class citizens in their own city!

He is a punk and a thug and it should be brought up at every press conference or public appearance just like what Tony did to the Funk.
