THE TKC SATURDAY NIGHT PLAYLIST!!! THE TRAGIC DEATH OF AMY WINEHOUSE AS A KANSAS CITY SUMMER METAPHOR!!!

Right now, news around the world seems just a bit more important than the developments of this hot and dusty cowtown . . . Nevertheless, I think there's a connection.

While recent Norway killings remind us the violence by way of the gun is a problem that crosses cultural and demographic lines.

Also . . .

The Tragic Demise Of Amy Winehouse Offers An Important Lesson For Dealing With Kansas City's Current Malaise

Like Amy Winhouse . . .

Kansas City is EXTREMELY talented while still borrowing heavily from African-American musical pioneers . . .

Kansas City seems haunted by inexorable forces that always seem to constantly create inner conflict . . .

And worst of all, just like Winehouse, most of Kansas City's problems seem self-inflicted.

But, while Amy Winehouse checked out and joined the stupid Club 27 as one of the jr. members, Kansas City's fate might be just a tad brighter . . .

KCK has shown us that victory against crime in the urban core is possible.

Mayor Sly is charming and his career trajectory seems to indicate that he can change the way the people of Kansas City feel about their town with nothing more than a smile.

And while the P&L District and their last remaining Jersey Shore acolytes sing the same old song that supports discrimination . . . More adventurous Kansas City residents are venturing to more welcoming hangouts like The Fringe Fest . . . or, heck, even Zona Rosa, Westport, 18th & Vine, The Plaza and other venues that don't actively practice discrimination.

So, tonight's playlist is dedicated to Amy Winehouse with the hope that Kansas City once again realizes that there's nothing worse than wasted talent.

As always, thanks for reading this week and have a safe and fun weekend!!!

  6. I was one of the first commentators on TKC to endorse Sly James. I thought that as a black man he would be uniquely qualified to address the problems of the east side. I believed that he might even serve as a counter role model for the young black men, & that if he spoke out against the violence that they would listen to him. But, I should have remembered that money trumps race. He doesn't seem to care about them. He seems like a caretaker mayor just going through the motions & basking in the fame. Tony mentions the honeymoon: There is no time for that! If you don't make an effort to stop the violence than nothing else will matter & people will continue to leave Kansas City until its a ghost town.

    Show some leadership: Speak!

Just look at Sly's calm, cool and easy smile.
He's got this thing handled my brothers, everybody can just relax now.

  8. How foolishly racist of yoou too think that a person of color would somehow have more honor than a white person, even if your brother.

Prhaps youll think about that as you carry the race banner and give the benefit of the doubt to the poor and downtrodden.

Now if we can get tony to understand this...as he should but in his blog, he gives the benefit of the doubt to all persons of color, despite the demographics found in prisons and poverty.

It's foolish to campaign for colors. MLK spoke of this, if you'll remember, on how to judge people...not on th color of their skin, but on th content of their character.

Or at th P&L, their dress and ability to charge drinks on their visacard. I'm okay with that. tony thinks its about color. Riff raff coms in rainbow colors and some probably even wear white shirts and ties to work.

    Discuss.

  9. "Tragic Death"?

How is the death of this drugged out slut "tragic"?

I'm surprised it took this long for her to die.

    Good riddance.

    ReplyDelete
  10. 01:40 you need to go and remove everything from your music collection that was influenced, or in any way resulted from drug use. That should leave you a Ted Nugent CD or two and maybe some Tibetan monk chant CD you picked up at Starbucks during that college semester you were "totally into the Eastern paths".

    ReplyDelete
  11. @ 1:44. How is anyones death from their choice of drug/alcohol abuse "tragic"?

    Your comment is stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  12. @ 1:44. If you don't think her choice to abuse drugs/alcohol was voluntary? Why don't you listen to her asinine song "Rehab".

  13. another lesbian bites the dust...so sad! Its life fuckers people die, and if all of you put the same effort you do into preaching about dead: you could maybe make a difference with the living...

the problem is to many in KC are afraid of death,(rightfully so with all the violence here) and are too afraid too stand up and fight for what they belive in! that is why the medal of honor is reserved for those that served in the military...there are NO heros in this, as Tonys puts it "Cow Town" not even you pussy hose draggers!!

  14. @ 2:17. Nice grammar. Have another drink/toke...

  15. Sly James the sell out Mayor.

  16. I like 2:17's comment. And Amy Winehouse was very talented. Like most people dealing with substance abuse problems, she probably had a lot of friends and family who loved her. Her death was tragic.

    ReplyDelete
  17. She was a crackhead that died in a 2.5 million dollar home. Who gives a crap.

    ReplyDelete
  18. A crackhead who made beautiful music. I wish more crackheads made that kind of contribution.

    ReplyDelete
  19. @ 9:52. She CHOSE not to quit, she CHOSE to continue abusing drugs/alcohol.

There is NOTHING tragic about her inevitable death.

    ReplyDelete
  20. She can't collect anyway now may as well exploit her song catalog by streaming it without paying the streaming fee royalties.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yah let's all exploit Amy hell why not!

  22. Orphan of the Road7/24/11, 1:21 PM

@Radioman, Dr King had begun to talk how it was not a black vs white problem but a have vs have-not problem. People forget when it went to Memphis to demonstrate the garbage workers were white.

And as far as Byron's comment, I remember when Wilson Goode was elected mayor of Philadelphia. I thought good, someone not raised in Philadelphia, a man of color would be better than the whites who ran against him. I thought because he was black, son of a share cropper he would be someone to really address the problems of Philadelphia.

What did he do? He dropped a bomb on predominately black neighborhood, burning it to the ground while police fired on those who were trying to escape the horror.

One woman and child, Ramona and Birdy Africa, were the only survivors.

  23. This is how.
You drive to the store buy the booze.
    You drive home.
    You open the bottle.
    You get a glass.
    You pour the drink.
Then you keep pouring and drinking.
Then repeat the process for years.

Lot's of places where you could have stopped.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Tragic? More like "as expected".
