Rage against the P&L District and their discriminatory bank card admission policy is brewing.
TKC LEADS THE STRUGGLE AGAINST SLEAZY P&L DISTRICT TACTICS AIMED AT EXCLUDING SO MANY LOCAL RESIDENTS FROM THEIR DISTRICT!!!
For me, this is an important Kansas City fight because it speaks to one of this town's greatest problems . . . So often, Kansas City mistakenly believes that discrimination and exclusionary practices against otherwise law abiding residents are justified because of pseudo-scientific demographic analysis . . . That's never the case. In many ways, this is misconception is part of our homicide debate as well.
It's also troubling to see so many residents of Kansas City blindly accept the edicts of perceived authority . . . It should be the other way around given that Kansas City is paying the P&L District's bills.
So, that's why I'm speaking out on this topic . . . A great many thanks to WDAF and Eric Burke who filed a very objective report on this struggle. Check the online report if you haven't seen it already:
P&L Late-Night Plastic-Only Policy Drawing Fire from Community
And yes, I've got even more tricks up my sleeve until the P&L District abandons this bit of misguided economic profiling that Kansas City is subsidizing.
"It's also troubling to see so many residents of Kansas City blindly accept the edicts of perceived authority"
ReplyDeleteI thought the same thing when KCMO taxpayer were lied to about the E-Tax.
true dat.
ReplyDeleteTKC leads the whining, as usual.
ReplyDeletewhy dont you get behind some of the wages of the fire dept that they are getting from the council. no one has balls to stand up to them the only one that has so far is glover. have tto wait and see if he votes with them on the raises.
ReplyDeleteChannel 4 used you to paint you as a whiner, throwing softball... for you chickened out saying things you've said on here.
ReplyDeleteAnd they did a basic commercial for the district. I don't think you'll find TV going after a commercial enterprise for you. And now that one station's done it, it's not EVEN going to be covered elsewhere. You're starting to act like Reverend Birmingham!
TV's not known for biting the hand that feeds them. That was evident last night on WDAF.
The reporter didn't even bother to get the other side of your made up tempest in a teapot... so he did it himself. I thought I was watching a commercial.
Frankly anybody willing to pay the ten bucks is glad they're doing what they can to keep the volatile loiterers far away from the place.
Upscale people are like that. Get over it. Bad move on your part...
Radio man, nobody wants to interview you. You are a very jealous person.
ReplyDeleteI only agree with Radioman somewhat. Any publicity is good publicity. But this won't change much for the P&L. The don't care about what Kansas City wants.
ReplyDeleteFox 4 gave it a mention, but shrugged it of as "what do you think"
ReplyDeleteI still think the problem you have created that will keep this a non issue is the failure to define this as two separate complaints
You seem to be complaining about the payment method.
But your noble sheep seem to be complaining that there is a charge at all.
most logical thinkers would see these as two separate issues.
If I cared, I'd probably write a more clearly defined complaint to unite my like minded people under so it's doesn't seem like the usual outrage that you have been spouting on here for years. Maybe you will make an impact this time, maybe not. But using the same loosely defined arguments hasn't worked out well before and probably won't now.
So get it together and hit um hard T. I'll bring the popcorn
And to clarify, I don't care cause I stay away unless going to sprint center. It's just not worth the overpriced drinks. And last time I was in b.more I skipped power plant live and went to a more locally owned district similar to Waldo/west port
ReplyDeleteSo my boycott is already national.
So, is P&L "reeling" under the effects of the TKC boycott????
ReplyDeleteI rarely go to P&L, however I plan to tonight to support the businesses there. In total support of the $10 admission fee, keeps the trash out.
ReplyDeletewent to the P&L last night; it was pleasantly uncrowded with nary a trace of troublemakers.
ReplyDeleteplease continue your boycott.
oh, do me a favor? extend that boycott to westport this fall, okay?
http://www.i-hacked.com/content/view/274/48/
ReplyDeleteI'm just going to leave this right here. I bet somebody can find a use for it*.
*Educational Use Only
The P&L District is dying and this is just one more nail in the coffin. Hope it will survive, for the sake of downtown, but I fear that it will probably be closed by the end of 2011 or soon after from what I have been seeing.
ReplyDeleteI won't go there because I don't want "who knows who" to have access to information contained on my credit or debit card, if the P&L gets hacked.
Also do not want to give them my credit or debit card because I do not want or need more junk mail or the risk of identity theft.
Lastly, I don't mind supporting local business. In fact, that is one of many reasons why I didn't go there before this latest issue. P&L ignored too many local entrepreneurs when they recruited out of town businesses during their start up.
9:46, you could just show up before 11 and pay cash all you want
ReplyDeleteproblem solved.
9:23--LOL!!
ReplyDeleteAnd Tony, could you please start another one of these badass "boycotts" against the Northland next? Been seeing some riff-raff up here lately and would prefer if you could generate some publicity about a non-issue in the hopes to keep them south of the river.
The credit card rule is just another way to keep minorities out of P&L. The lame excuse is if you have too much cash around its dangerous..hahaha. just hire another security guard.
ReplyDeleteP&L not BRother or Brownies after 11 pm. And why just Friday & Sat. I should get some "Visa" cash cards and see if P&L will let me in.
P&L is soon to go bankrupt Tony, didn't you hear?
ReplyDeleteThey'll be out of KC by next year.
your boycott worked.
I'm not jealous, I'm practical. And I know the media. They will be no help.
ReplyDeleteIt's a non story. P&L isn't around to please "Kansas City". They're around to make money...and only upscale people can afford to spend money there. They don't want the riff raff.
Neither to the paying customers.
Has it occurred to anyone that the reason they're probably asking for the cover charge on a credit card is for accountability. If you just have doormen accepting cash then there's no guarantee how much of it they'll pocket since no one would know?
ReplyDeleteIf they really want the $10 cover charge revenue then they have no choice but to implement some means of accountability so they don't lose half of it in some guy's pocket that night or just get rid of the cover entirely.
11:12 - its been mentioned
ReplyDeleteinternal revenue controls and safety of employees are discriminatory when it comes to disrupting the "Chill Spot"
In order to shut people up they should just put in a vending machine to dispense tickets for cash, pre-sell entrance tickets in the office or near by stores (like a coupon book, packs of 1, 5 or 10) or build a ticket booth right on the sidewalk.
This would actually benefit all involved as the unused tickets are still revenue, which could help ween the district off t.p. dollars its win win
but lets stay all lose lose, its more entertaining.
Great comment 11:25!
ReplyDeleteLet's face it, KC riff raff is pretty unsavory. No one wants them, and its not because of the color of their skin. It is because violence is sure to follow.
ReplyDeleteThis is about violence.
To the pro-Cordish crowd several points
ReplyDelete1. What are riff-rafts?? How can you determine someone that is a problem person or person unable to pay unless they look homeless. Does baggy pants mean you're not able to pay for anything? Or maybe long shirts mean you'll kill at any given time? Is that the analysis?
2. These people have a RIGHT to frequent any place they want to go. Sure a dress code can be implemented. So can a desired payment method. But the truth is whether they wear baggy pants, gold chains, or even cowboy boot, a violent person is exactly that..A VIOLENT PERSON!! They can change clothes, put on a suit, wear flip flop or whatever. Their attire will not change their violent disposition.
3. I say for the last time..POLICE/SECURITY presence deters crime. That's it. The Security people feel at these venues are exactly that...SECURITY. I GUARANTEE YOU that you could charge $15 on credit cards, tell the police and security to go home, and you would have riots once you mix in the expensive drinks in the P&L. Just that simple.
4. So be honest. If you've spent 5 minutes down there on a Friday or Saturday, you will see more police than if President Obama was in town. And that's that!!
So if we all know police deterence in paramount to security, and anyone with an IQ over 55 does too, then why complain about riff-rafts and they way people dress? Is it that they're taking up too much space, they're breathing too much air, they're in the way?
ReplyDeleteSince most of the businesses can implement a drink minimum, paying for things is not an issue. I would implement a drink minimum it were black, white, young or old patrons if I owned a bar or club. Many bars do.
If none of those are the case...last thing left is that you and the power and light just don't want black people around. And that's that!!
Im going to try and educate the white majority on this issue on exclusion from public places.
ReplyDeleteAs an African-American male, I grew up with a hot spot in Kansas city basically all but telling me they didn't want me around. I'm 42, graduated HS in 1987. Back then, Westport was the spot. My family was not rich, just simply middle class. But once in awhile we would venture to westport to have a good time.
The overall aura of the district back then was purely anti black youth. We all knew it. Just didn't want to admit it. So I got tired of the police following me, employees of bars and clubs rolling their eyes, the horrible service. I just said you know what, I'm never going back. Now yes, I wore Run Dmc addidas, I listened to public enemy..LOUDLY, and wore fake gold chains. I dressed like a hoodlum even though I was a colleg student. That's just what we wore back then. I dressed a certain way, but I was no means a gangster or thug. Far from it.
Fastforward to 2011, my daughters are off to colleg this year ..WOO HOO!! my Alma mater at that. And KC still has this issue.
That's why I will never frequent the power and light. My nephew dress in attire that's..let's say not prep. My daughters do too. But the fact that they are good kids, with discretionary income, college bound, and never been in trouble are being excluded from a place simply because of their color...cloaked in a vague dress code or payment method.
As a "journalist," did you interview the P&L people to get their side of the story?
ReplyDeleteThey were talking about food deserts on KMBZ this morning.
ReplyDeleteOne caller asked why there are no liquor deserts in KCMO.
Good question.
Craig Glazer summed things up pretty good last night on Shanin and Parks.
ReplyDeleteWhat did glazer say?
ReplyDeleteMack, go stand outside p&l with a big wad 10's in your hand clearly showing, between 11 and 1
ReplyDeleteIf nothing happens to you will have proved us all wrong. If something does, we probably still won't care about where you grew up or that you were different than the majority.
Just like the majority of white are not out to scam or discriminate but just want to go about our lives but continue to be hated by people like you for the CEOs and politicians that get bad press. It works both ways.
I get treated different depending on what clothes I wear also being a mid 20's suburban white kid
Some times I go hippie, some times I go trashy, and sometimes I rock the suite. And people treat me very different because of it.
11:50--Way to unintentionally stereotype during the course of your argument about how people shouldn't stereotype.
ReplyDeleteHypocrite.
To 1:06pm
ReplyDeleteWhat you are asking me to do is ridiculous. Your point is really really stupid. When have you ever seen a person just walk around with wads of cash out visible.
But taking your idiotic point, I would do that knowing police are in direct vicinity. No problem. Plus...I'm not a pussy.
But That is not the point. If the youth you are so afraid of AREN'T BOTHERING YOU, and they are dressed differently, just want to have fun too, who are you to tell them what to wear and where to go. You need to take self defense classes, get stronger, bigger, carry a gun, or simply.....stop being a bitch. Stop being afraid of your own shadow. Not all thug-gangsta-urban dressed folks are out to kill and or rape you. Although you might enjoy the rape. Geez.. And that's that!!
Tell me where exactly you are treated differently because of what you're wearing?? Walmart, car dealership, chipotle, job interview? Come on sub-urban white kid.
To 1:14
ReplyDeletePlease explain. Your idea of what I did is laughable. Sorry... You are trying too hard man.
"I dressed like a hoodlum..."
ReplyDeleteAnd people actually treated you like a hoodlum? I'm shocked!
Oak park, plaza west port shops.... The point is if they think your up to no good than they are going to keep a watchful eye.
ReplyDeleteThe point is that's what you are asking the poorly paid p and l door guys to do, and I bet they have door guys from all races who would object to taking cash and making change all night at the gates of any of Kansas city's entertainment districts regardless of the crowd
If they only take exact change is that discrimination too
I didn't say once that it was out of fear for a few dark kids. I think it's a bad idea as a business person to have people out making change in the dark when con games of I gave you a 20 or you didn't give me enough change could be done by anybody
Why do you continue to make this about race?
I bet you believe every bald guy is a member of the clan too
I'm just trying to put out perspectives yet you continue to hurl accusations. If your such the better person why all the hate
ReplyDeleteI actually apologize about the name calling. My bad.
ReplyDeleteBut I have to disagree.. I don't think in making it about race I'm just highlighting a point of view many people may nit understand. The reason why people like me, law abiding citizens feel on a daily basis. I'm just projecting what is projected upon us. Or at least what we feel in projection.
You know perception is reality. So accept my apology for the name calling, I'm far from a hater. Unless you're a conservative. Just kidding just kidding.
I totally disagree about the security issue. Its just not a valid argument. People take cash at bars and clubs everyday all the time. It's just not a feasible way of doing business. Just tell me one place, one business that deals in ENTERTAINMENT that only accepts credit/debit to enter. And once you are inside then they'll accept cash.
ReplyDeleteIf you can tell me of a place I promise I will recant all my negative Cordish comments and give TKC a manicure butt naked with church socks and sandals. With an Oakland raiders doo-rag on.
And thats that!!
Yes I dressed like a hoodlum. You're not disproving my point. To say that is ok is to say if you have a dress like a hooker then guys can come up and hound you or your sister or your mom and ask her/ them...HOW MUCH TRICK FOR A BLOW JOB!!!
ReplyDeleteGotta say it: KC MACK Kick Ass
ReplyDeleteNo worries, good point, it plays both ways
ReplyDeleteAnd I do understand your point of view as I have had a diverse set of friends in many cities, black, Hispanic, gay straight....
I may be wishfully by thinking it's not cordish discriminating and that they have learned from past experience, although probably not. but I know I would not put an employee in that situation at the perimeter of any entertainment district at that point of time now that there is reliable technology in hand held credit scanners. It's not just the people outside but the drunks leaving that might see a wad of cash and decide they need some cab fair.
I'm calling it a week. Enjoy your weekend
.... No I can't name one but now that the technology is more accessible i wouldn't be surprised to see it more. Kansas city has been a historic testing ground from the (average persons) reaction to this sort of thing
ReplyDeleteGood point 2:02/2:06
ReplyDeleteIf it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck... it's probably a duck.
ReplyDeleteGlazer said the problem was that too many young African-American males don't know how to act and are a big problem when they get together in groups.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhlW6SRu5rA&NR=1
ReplyDeleteWhether it's 50% of all Black males under the age of 25 so called " don't know how to act", and show video after video,
ReplyDeleteAnd you come up with every first hand account of how these youth treated you and your family, that does not represent all black young men you can't exclude one for your own, personal, narrow thoughts.
Are some words missing above?
ReplyDeleteI think what you mean (to leave out racial terms because it applies to all groups)
People are Idiots, a Person is Smart
Did it ever occur to the people that don't want black people in the power and light because they're too violent, and the power and light district is for the most part safe, think that maybe..just maybe..the black kids down there want to be in a safe environment also? I bring this up cause I work with a couple of young black men and women who say that exact thing. Theyre not going to go now after the boycott but I just thought that was interesting.
ReplyDeleteI heard it was because too many black guys were picking up that suburban white JOCO pussy...and you know once you go black you don't go back..
ReplyDeleteThat white joco pussy is good!!!
ReplyDeleteKeep it! Every body knows you have to import clean snatch around here, state schools have already tossed um around
ReplyDeletewow....just was offere
ReplyDeleted a "vip" pass last nite from Mosaic waitress. teh pass was free adn it will enable me and all my white buddies to get into teh court yard for free. i asked the waitress why she gave it to us and she replied " we are instructed to give it to everyone that tips good and are "clean cut". aka no blacks
