Missouri House District "reapportionment" is a controversial subject in Kansas City's urban core and maybe that's why the topic has been ALMOST COMPLETELY NEGLECTED by The Kansas City Star.
On Kansas City's Eastside there is a great deal of concern about political representation and how new lines will affect existing power structures . . . Even in Midtown Kansas City white enclaves the fate of the 39th District draws a bit of curiosity among the few people who vote . . .
To wit . . .
A GREAT MANY THANKS TO THE KICK-ASS TKC TIPSTERS WHO TOLD US ABOUT MISSOURI HOUSE DISTRICT MAPS RECENTLY RELEASED!!!
The lack of any play for these maps reminds me that STL does a much better job of covering Jeff City than our so-called "paper-of-record" . . . That's mostly about life in the JoCo Golden Ghetto.
Anyhoo . . .
Take a look at this:

And then, read some rather valuable perspective from a KICK-ASS TKC TIPSTER:
The commissioners have released maps.. which you can view here http://oa.mo.gov/bp/redistricting/housemap/
Here's the money quote:
"But one contrast between Democratic and Republican plans is the number of majority African-American districts."
"The Democratic plan has HD41 (64%), HD42 (63%), HD43 (63%), and HD50 (62%) as majority-African American. Those districts are relatively close to the Talboy/Curls partial map for KCMO (which can be viewed on the OA.mo.gov site)
"The Republican plan has HD42 (75%), HD43 (75%), and HD47 (54%) as majority-African American. The Republican plan also has a 40th district that combines North KC and Northeast KC. A 41st district that combines East KC and West Independence/Sugar Creek. It's fairly blatant packing of minority votes. The Republican plan reduces the number of majority-African American districts statewide despite the percentage of African-Americans going up in the last 10 years.
Check the screenshot of 40 and 41 on the Republican map . . .
"13 votes are needed for a map, IIRC. 9 Republicans/9 Democrats. I doubt they will pick a map and it'll go to a panel of judges this fall.""
#########
So . . . Basically, what we're talking about is the Missouri GOP maybe gerrymandering for their own interests with some noteworthy give and take ALONG WITH Demos attempting to draw the lines for their own benefit as well . . . But a bit less blatantly . . .
The fact that judges will probably draw up the whole thing isn't really a compromise but something that both parties expected.
Still . . . It's nice to see a wish list of how Missouri would be cut up IF politicos had their way . . .
DEVELOPING . . .
Thanks for the link T.
ReplyDeleteIt is interestng to note that the Democrats got rid of the Brookside district (39) and the Republicans keep it.
ReplyDeleteThat means the Democrats would weaken the Jackson County delegation by giving a way a liberal seat where it is comparatively easy to raise funds for other districts and take strong stands for progressive government.
I guess that is done so we can have another Jonas Hughes or Mike Brown -- which weakens the delegation again.
The Republicans seem to be treating Jackson County Democrats better than the Democrats are.
this just in: Tony discovers an element of political self-interest at work in elected officials. you scoop the Star on that one, too, Jose Cronkheit?
ReplyDeleteKander sold out Kansas City.
ReplyDeleteThe irony of redistricting around the country is that often Republican and black Democrate interests are the same. Fewer white Democrate districts generally means more Republican and black Democrate districts. Bye-bye Carnahan.
ReplyDeleteAs long as we don't dilute the black vote. That's important.
ReplyDeleteWell, you do have to be a citizen to vote and you can't be a felon. You also have to be willing to put down the muscatel, reefer or crack pipe long enough to get your ass to the polls. Show up with warrants and you may be arrested.
ReplyDeleteSorta disqualifies about 3/4 of the 'urban core' right off the bat, huh? So WTF diff will redistricting make?
Zero. Zilch. Nada.
In Missouri, you can vote if you are a felon if you are no longer on probation "Nada dip shit."

We're talking about the urban core here, 1:35. The only time they get off probation is when they're incarcerated or dead.
