Crime in one of Kansas City's white enclaves has recently taken on a strange subtext given the weird cultural logics of media reports and public perception. Put simply, the topic of race and class permeates so many Waldo crime stories as the (lower) middle-class part of town is remarkably inconsistent in their reaction to criminal attacks.
Examples:
"Waldo suspect's address surprises neighbors"
Really? The subtext of that headline reveals a lot more than perceptions about location . . . The so-called "surprise" is also a statement about race and class stereotypes from this tragically segregated town. The "surprise" seems to be that it's a white guy who lived nearby . . . And it's only a "surprise" because stereotypes led so many people to expect otherwise.
Alonzo Washington also publishes some important commentary regarding the race of the suspect.
And, as always, it's important to remember the dude is innocent until prove guilty.

Sadly, the assumption of innocence is a right that's rarely afforded to people of color who are arrested and summarily discounted by the media watching public.

ReplyDeleteMaybe when making an article like this you could post crime rates by race vs. percent of race in the city. So, say if 80% of crime is committed by a certain race even though they only make up 30% of the population, it might go to show that people's perceptions are accurate.
ReplyDeleteWith more and more unskilled jobs go overseas and illegals take the few that remain, you'll see crime go up with people who don't go to college, regardless of race. Lack of good jobs and crime go hand in hand.
