STL Local Police Control Push Outpaces KC

STL Political Blog: Nixon will consider local control of St. Louis police — if there's consensus

Meanwhile, Kansas City is too scared of incompetent City Hall politicos to trust them with the Police Department.

Comments

  1. Kansas City has never even TRIED to introduce local control of the police in the legislature.
And the KCPD is perfectly happy to operate the way they do, without any real oversight by anyone.
And no accountability for murders at the rate of two every week.
It's really too bad the command staff is more interested in being left alone than in leading a high-morale effective department. Maybe the new chief can breathe some life into what's currently a very demoralized department.

  2. New chief will be from the same old good ole boy system with in. So that won't change . And why would anyone want to go under KC control when this Hell hole joke of a town and sorry ALREADY. New mayor can't even run what it has let alone taking on the police dept. What has the mayor or anyone for that matter done to stop the murders??? NOTHING. its not all on the police dept. Leave them alone until we get a city that can run what it has first then give it more . This town is so worried about having minority leaders in everything instead of quality . GOD help this town.

  3. KCPD needs to be under local control. The current system is not working.

Yes Melba Curls, John Sharp and the rest of those committed Shitty Council folk will make sure the police department is on the up and up.

Just like Melba and John are looking out for the community's best interest. Just look how they are helping advocating for the convenience store in Northeast.

If you think the police department is bad now, wait until the folks who have run this city into the ground are running it.

  7. Blame the police all you want but the real problem is the judicial system. Police arrest the same thugs over and over with no real punishment for the offenders...

  8. Tony, you rail on about how the fire department owns the city council and now you want the police department to be controlled by the city council (AKA KCFD council)? Do you think the citizens really want one agency (KCFD) controlling fire, ambulance service and the police? Why stop at a 4% raise why not 75%.

  9. No way will Louie wright control the PD.....

  10. Local control for KCPD after this mess with the fire dept?? Are you crazy? How many "extensive" private meetings will the council and mayor and McInerny hold to discuss this issue? (Oh, wait, they've already been doing this for months.) This city is broke, mismanaged, and politically out of control. We have way too many "leaders" with political ambition who care more about themselves than they do about the citizens of KC who pay their salaries. And you want these people to run the police dept too? Get me out of this city!

  11. 6:30, 7:30, and 8:05--You need a history lesson. The PD used to be under local control until government corruption forced the state to take over (ie. see Pendergast Era). And with the way local government is run now, do do you really think its a good idea that they go back under city control at this point in time?

And 10:10--You just about hit the nail on the head. But remember, if the PD goes under local control, then there's no more McInerny or the rest of the state-appointed board of police commissioners. Instead the secret meetings will be between Sly and the likes of Curls and Sharp. Yikes!

  12. Pendergast Era oh brother that argument is so OLD.

  13. 12:36--Yet its the exact reason why things are the way they are today. Many things are "old" yet form the basis of why we do things the way we do. (ie. see Bill of Rights, Constitution of the United States of America, Gettysburg Address...)

"Democracy and Freedom, oh brother that argument is so OLD"

"Slavery, oh brother that argument is so OLD"

    Get it now?

  14. Sure don't and I guess you think the current system works? LOL.

  15. Yeah, democracy is working, that's why we're raising the debt ceiling and the Super rich are getting richer as the middle class disappears.

  16. We trusted the with the firemen and look what happened.

  17. Do you actually think the police ANYWHERE have the ability to prevent murders??? Stop and think about this. Even if we put a cop on every corner, Joe Gangbanger/Drug-Dealer would just go somewhere private to "bust a cap" in their enemy. So many other murders stem from a personal relationship that would never, ever come to the attention of the police prior to the killing. Even the random stray-bullet death or random-act-of-violence will never be prevented by the police. The police has been and will always be a reactionary government agency.

  18. No I think COPS and the Police are nothing but hype.

  19. The homicide rate is steady compared to the past several years. Are there too many....yes, however most are involving people active in other criminal behavior. All other crime seems to be trending down. The real issue with the PD seems to be the clearance rate. Questions need to be asked about what, if anything, changed in the detective units that may contribute to that problem. If there have been no changes, look at other factors, such as victim/witness cooperation, prosecutor office and the rest of the judicial system.
