NORTHEAST NEWS vs. DISCOUNT SMOKES!!!

Credit old school "dead tree media" persistence and community reporting in the latest face-off in Kansas City's Northeast Neighborhood . . . Despite the fact that I'm reading all of it online.

Anyhoo . . .

CHECK THE LATEST KICK-ASS COMIC FROM EL BRYAN REGARDING A LIQUOR LICENSE HOT MESS IN NORTHEAST!!!

Even more interestingly . . .

IN THE LATEST NORTHEAST NEWS FEATURE "A MATTER OF CONVENIENCE" . . . THE MYTH THAT A PROPOSED LIQUOR LICENSE EXCEPTION WILL BENEFIT NEIGHBORS IS COMPLETELY BUSTED!!!

Quotes from City Hall, the projects across the street and Missouri District 40 House Rep. John Rizzo depict Northeast residents united against the liquor license exception.

  1. So, the gist of the article is that black folks can't drink responsibly. Tony, are you really on board with that?

  2. Shut up Jermaine.

  3. That doctored drawing looks like it was done by a seventh grader. What did he have before "CHICKENS"?

    I'll bet "CHICKS"

Nice talk for a quick stop store. Things must be pretty boring in that neighborhood if this is all the local paper's got to make news about.

This one, chicos, is a non starter.

  4. Radio man do we have to send you back to your own blog to play by yourself?

  7. Damn, man. We are in the midst of a food desert with bullets flying and people want to argue over whether or not denying another package liquor license amounts to anti-competitive practices....

The argument is meant to show that the 3rd District council people are totally out of touch with the reality on the ground. Their priorities are screwed up. We need people who are conscious of the problems, and who know how to find solutions.

This takes time. But it begins by identifying the drivers of blight and eliminating those. What follows from that is increasing home values. What follows from that is a better tax base for the schools. What follows from that is more teachers (ideally). What follows from that is smaller classroom sizes. What follows from that is better education.

And we need to get kids involved in urban gardening - we need to get better food into the schools. We can offset the cost of better food by having the neighborhoods grow it on the lots that are reclaimed.

There is a process here to improve everybody, to lift everybody up. I think Rizzo gets it, the NE News gets it.

Now we need to get the 3rd Council reps to get it. We do that by holding them accountable for their actions.

  8. There ya go JW. Nice work. Did ya see that 8:07? Even JW, a current darling among commenters in here agrees this is a non starter.

So many important things to do besides fight over a little cig and beer place.

  9. It is worth fighting against another liquor license and it is worth pointing out that the 3rd District reps are out of touch.

It is very important because it illustrates the disconnect.

It is also important because it enables people in NE to remember that they have the power to change the momentum. NE residents have the power to stand up against Curls and Reed - to let them know that it is politically damaging to support beer and smokes in the midst of crumbling infrastructure and increasing crime.

It is worth it to fight for positive change.

  10. Reed sponsored it and is now supposedly against it. He has no clue what he is doing and has no spine to do the right thing in the context of competing interests. His "bright" career will end here and he'll just be another Troy Nash.

  11. City hall's time is better spent bringing in REAL retailers, not fighting with convenience stores.

This is a distraction that prevents gumment from doing real improvements. Whre's the nearest REAL grocery store? Dollar Store? Real drug store? or are they afraid to come here becasue of the nature of the area culture?

Wanna improve the nature of convenience stores? set a rule that says liquor and smokes can only take up xx small percentage of shelf space compared to other grocery type goods.

Who knows, th liq smoke sales will also sell bread, milk and babyfood.

  12. Would this be an issue if it were Quicktrip wanting to operate in Northeast? Of course not.

    ReplyDelete
  13. J.W. What food desert you talkin bout?

    ReplyDelete
  14. There's a QuikTrip not too many blocks away.

  15. This food desert:

    http://www.kansascity.com/2011/07/15/3017297/kc-food-desert-gains-a-healthful.html

This is where the focus of our 3rd District reps needs to be - on the problems faced by families here on the East Side. While they are funneling $500,000,000 for TIF development of yet another mall, Churches are having to find new and inventive ways to get decent food to the families that live in a food desert.

    WE MUST CHANGE THE FOCUS!!!!

The area in question is NOT a food desert. There is a Thriftway, Price Chopper and Mexican grocery within walking distance.

    ReplyDelete
  18. J.W.: You apparently know nothing about the area being discussed. The story says there is a Thriftway just up the hill, and there is a Price Chopper & a hispanic grocery store real close.

    Northeast isn't a food desert.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Dave, don't forget the Aldi just a few blocks away! Easy walking distance from Git & Go location and that apartment complex.

    ReplyDelete
  20. There's plenty of money in the "food desert" for cigs, beer, wine & lottery tickets.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Radioman: You're also uninformed about the area. There are CVS and Walgreen stores within walking distance.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Right, Bridgette, I forgot.

No doubt about it, we done got us one of them there food deserts.
