Mattie Rhodes Center’s Latino Advocacy Taskforce to host Night Out Against Crime Event

Mattie Rhodes Center ’s Latino Advocacy Taskforce (LAT) will host a Night Out Against Crime Wednesday, August 3, 20 1l. The event will be at the Northeast Concourse at Benton Blvd and St. John Ave. from 5 to 7 p.m.

The event is in conjunction with National Night Out Against Crime-a nation wide public safety and anti-crime campaign. The purpose of Mattie Rhodes Center ’s Night Out event will be to provide information on how individuals can make their homes and families safer, reporting crime and working with law enforcement, and information on youth programming and social services. The event comes in light of rising gang related crime in the Latino community.

The Taskforce, launched Memorial Day weekend of 2010, was created to provide support services for victims and families of violent crime in Kansas City ’s Latino community. Over the last year, the Taskforce has helped numerous families with fundraising for funeral arrangements and other expenses, offering grief support and counseling services, providing victim and court advocacy, maintaining public awareness through vigils and press conferences, and communicating with media, law enforcement, and the community regarding violent crime.

Event activities will include a free soccer clinic and food, child fingerprinting by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, a fire department pumper truck to keep everyone cool, and give-aways. Information will also be provided by: Mattie Rhodes Center , the Latino Advocacy Taskforce, Kansas City Fire Department, Kansas City Police Department , Kansas City Missouri School District, Crime Stoppers, Aim4Peace, Office of Community Complaints, CCO, Jackson County Sheriffs Department, LNESC, Rose Brooks Center , Samuel Rodgers Health Center , Don Bosco Center , and other partners.

  2. Yes, all the "gvieaway" gang looks like they're there! Where's Al bBooks, though? Must not be any money in this gig.

  3. Are they against the crime of illegal immigration?

  4. They are probably against scapegoating.

  5. And, of course, the most important question is: What about the other 364 nights of the year?
Public safety isn't about vigils and press conferences; it takes hard work by residents and city government, working together EVERY DAY to really make a difference.
The people at this event will be lucky if they even see each other in the months ahead.
Dog-and-pony shows and televised events get us nowhere!

Byron, what makes illegal immigration off limits? Why is it OK for illegal aliens to break our laws?

Is there any limit? Can the entire population of Mexico come to the U.S.?

Do you support illegals because we treated Mexico badly in the 1800s and forced them to give up land?

Isn't Mexico the creation of the Spanish?

How did the Aztecs get to be such a big, powerful empire? Did they use gentle persuasion to get other people to join their empire? Or did they conquer them?

Isn't Mexico run by an elite of lighter skinned part-Europeans?

Your questions are good & relevant.

The main reason that I defend the 'illegals' is because they are poor people with few choices. They are our neighbors, not our enemies. The rich Mexicans can legally immigrate if they want. But, being rich, they have no reason to seek greener pastures.

The Aztecs suppressed their neighbors (that's how you get an empire), so that when Cortez arrived these neighbors saw an opportunity & allied with him. The same thing happened in Peru. The natives only thought in terms of their feud with each other & didn't see the Europeans as a common enemy. In North America when they finally saw this, it was too late, though the Shawnee leader did try.
