ReplyDeleteThere are a number of volunteer teams cleaning up neighborhoods on the east side and they could certainly make good use of a big group of teens.
ReplyDeleteSo these folks can put on some work clothes, grab a shovel or two, and actually do some good for the community and its residents.
What an opportunity for the self-appointed "leaders" in the black community to actually help the people who are really making a difference, instead of demanding something for themselves.
Or better yet, just get out of the way.

Way more than $100,000 for the mounted unit. That is the biggest waste of money in the department. Couldn't the officers make arrests on foot, or in a car? Not to mention that they go to CANADA for training. The cost of that unit is closer to 500,000. Imagine how many officers that could put on the street in high crime areas.

ReplyDelete903 all the money used for the horses is grant money. That money can't be used for other things. Very little dept money is used for that unit. But I do agree those officers are deff needed more in the patrol part of the dept seeings how the dept is short 3 or 4 hundered officers

9:35 is sort of correct. The Mounted Patrol unit is primarily funded by grants and private contribution. And though there is a need for more officers out there, the dept is currently on a hiring freeze due to a DOJ investigation.

If they are really that useful, why don't we put more officers on hroseback? Becasue it is a waste of money. IF you cant use the money for something else, then put them in the high crime areas.
ReplyDelete2:31--this is 1:52. Trust me you're preaching to the choir bud. I am not advocating that all officers should go to horseback. I am not a big fan of the PD having such a unit anyway. But I do understand the historical purpose of having a Mounted Patrol unit. Its an image thing. That's the only reason why I can see that its still there. But I can also foresee that once the grants are gone and the private funding dries up, there will no longer be a Mounted Patrol unit. Just can't afford it. But man it sure is nice watching one of those giant horses move a crowd of less-than-cooperative individuals.
