TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! MAYOR SLY'S PEOPLE KNOW THAT KANSAS CITY COUNCIL DUDE JOHN SHARP IS GOING TO BE A PROBLEM!!!
I've often touted the EXPERT opinion that every new set of political promises in Kansas City turn to crap eventually.
Time has always proven me right.
To wit . . . Right now we need to look at yet another way that Mayor Sly is doomed to failure and in a few short years both Council peeps Jan Marcason and Ed Ford will most likley be making a serious play for his job.
NOT SO LONG AGO I TALKED TO ONE OF MAYOR SLY'S "PEOPLE" AND IT WAS AGREED THAT "YEAH, WE KNOW HE (JOHN SHARP) IS GONNA BE A PROBLEM."
One of the major reasons Council Dude Sharp stays winning is because he has nothing to lose.
He's termed out. He has openly talked about retirement and remarked that this is his last Council Term.
And let's get even more real . . . The word about John Sharp is that he was delivering newspapers not so long ago when he hit a rough patch and now that he's working on one of those handsome $60k+ gigs at City Hall for 2 days work . . . Council Dude Sharp has been at both sides of the KC political spectrum and it doesn't seem like he's taking anything for granted . . . Also, he's ready to work.
Consider . . .
Councilman John Sharp knows his way around The Charter and The City Hall Legislative Process better than anybody right now.
Mayor Sly attempted to confine Councilman Sharp to a public safety board and there was some pretty loud pouting that everyone heard.
Nevertheless . . . We've seen Council Dude Sharp push through Super-TIF for Three Trails, an ill-advised South KC Aquatics Facility and more TIF for Ward Parkway.
WHEN IT COMES TO REAL LEGISLATION THAT THE COUNCIL IS MOVING ON, COUNCIL DUDE SHARP IS SETTING THE AGENDA AND NOT MAYOR SLY . . . EVENTUALLY THAT'S GOING TO BE A PROBLEM!!!
I'm curious to see Mayor Sly "mediate" his way out of this one and wonder which one of these two politicos will prove most effective at carrying out the will of Local 42 . . . Which is the organization that really runs City Hall and put both of these guys in power.

ReplyDeleteNo one serious will run against them in the election for their last term because it is easier just to wait 4 years, and in their last term there is no publid accountability.

ReplyDeleteJohn Sharp is a dedicated public servant. He spends countless hours working on city issues. He is particularly a neighborhood activist and neighborhood people in his district know they can count on him. He does his homework, and when he comes to a committee meeting or council meeting, he has read the proposed actions and can find any problems. I have watched the meetings and he has had to correct the legal staff due to his astute due diligence. Why he is getting such a bad rap from Tony I will never understand. If Sly's people were smart, they would work closely with him and become a strong ally with him. They could all go a lot further if they all worked together, and especially with someone like John Sharp who has many years of experience and has never lost an election in his district.

ReplyDeleteKCMO has very few people who run for office to actually DO anything; they're all much more interested in how important they are and what taxpayer-financed job they're going to run for next. Sharp will sit out the council for four years and be back again. What else is he "qualified" to do?

ReplyDeleteSharp is the same guy that has been proclaiming to the news media that there would be a $5 million dollar savings to the taxpayers if the police department would just join the city's health trust. Then I noticed on Channel 2 that Sharp and the new City Manager went to the last BOPC meeting and Schulte told the Board there is no savings for the taxpayers if the police department joins the trust, and here's the real kicker, joining the plan will cost police employees an additional $560,000 a year. That's a far cry from $5 million is savings for the taxpayers!!!
ReplyDeleteI've read so much about the $5 million dollar saving in the paper and on this blog, I was all for forcing the police to join the city's plan. Now it seems the police had some justification for not wanting to go along with Sharp.

His vote is ALWAYS for sale...make a contribution and buy his vote. Sharp has quite a campaign war chest so it's not likely he'll retire soon.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget Sharp is the dude who almost single handedly destroyed MAST. He was also busted for selling council freebie tickets on Craigslist and pocketing the cash. He has helped wreck KC's relationships with Jeff City due to his horrible and mean spirited personality. He was banished to the public safety committee for good reason.
As for the boondoggle of the aquatics center, Sharp didn't "win" anything with the council. He pushed through this unaffordable project because he sank all of the 6th district's PIAC money into the ill advised project. When the roads are full of potholes and the drainage issues worsen in the 6th, residents can thank/blame Sharp for diverting capital dollars from much-needed maintenance projects to an Aquatics Park that will require a huge city subsidy to even open their doors and keep them open.
Sharp is not a public servant. He is a public pig at the proverbial public trough.

ReplyDeleteIf Sharp was smart, he would stop the FD from violating the FLSA by having EMS workers work 24/48 like firemen. No overtime violates the federal law unless they are fire suppression. the city is going to have a big lawsuit on their hands!

Marcason and Glover are tied for the meanie award and Reed, Wagner and Circo are the big egos with nothing to be that proud of. Melba, as her name suggests, is just dry toast. Davis is smart and is the most mature of the bunch and I don't mean age. As for Sly. Cocky prick that is going to be a one termer because he is all talk.
