They just want to get PAID. If the e-tax fails, it's beyond me to see how that can happen, you know the politicians aren't taking any cuts, so the PD & FD are afraid it's get them. Other thanone term FUNK, when has jeffroe won a KCMO election? Mrs. Cerner v. Hizzoner Cleaver? Funk rerun? South of the river he doesn't have a chance.
The problem with the Pro E-tax crowd...they have not offered one single idea or concession on how they could spend the money better. I understand how bad this community needs it but I am confident it will pass so I will vote No just so some kind of message is sent even if it falls on deaf ears.
Remember folks this is the same Police Department that spent 3000.00 bucks at the Capital Grille for steak dinners and wine, and now they say they're short Money? Bull shit.
For some reason the ad neglects to feature the $395,000 DUI van that the KCPD just bought. And there's not a single new idea or commitment on the part of the e-tax boosters. They think things are just fine the way they are.
Vote no on the etax. Let's recoup 100% from non KCMO people. Triple the cost of water that KCMO sells to other cities. Charge these cities for Hazmat, police helicopter and SWAT. Give KCMO residents a break.
Kill the ETAX take the money away and they will start talking realistically. They just might rewrite a bill that EARMARKS the money so that it has to be spent on what we want. I guess everyone has seen that the EDC and the CLAY COUNTY EDC have both put in money to keep the ETAX flowing their way. Not bad ETAX money ahd TIF money they do real well putting a few grand into a vote.
I'm with Mahlon Davis and his crew, Vote no on the E-Tax. Mahlon and his friend is the only one taking a stand, I hear they are having a event on the 29th at papa lews on 12th and Brooklyn first 25 people eat free can't beat that. And from 3pm-5pm I'm there I hope you are there.
The safety tax that passed can only contribute to capital improvements (dui buses, equiptment and such) it's written in the tax requirement that it can't cover personel. Fact is, there will be cuts. And it will be personel. Which is scary. Who gives a shit if a fire-station is open if there's no fucking firemen in it? Hope this happens to all of you short-sighted dicks who are going to vote no.
the fire department runs trash fires already and probably everyday. i can post a bunch of what ifs also maybe some of wasteful spending by the fire department...maybe they just need to reduce how many people are in the fire stations? that would be a start. and calling the no voters short sighted dicks is dumb, maybe you are upset because you cant sit around the station and suck on the e-tax dick anymore.
The Police Department and Fire Department are Unions and will use every threat in the book to scare taxpayers. It's BS strong arm tactics. And I for one I'm fed up with Kansas City being held hostage by them. Vote NO E-Tax.
9:59 PM The reason people are voting NO to The E-Tax is because you Public Servants think the Voter are dicks as you put it. We are tried of your attitude that your are entitled to your job because your a fire fighter or cop.... the private sector is having to scale back, people are having to cut their own budgets, people are losing their jobs, Government must cut back just like everyone else.
What happened to the 30 million the city and union wanted to give the MAST employees for their pension? Giving away money to people who aren't even employees yet seems like a waste. Vote no on the etax and send a message. No more wasteful government spending!
To put it simply, every city council candidate who opposed the E-Tax lost. That is why the E-Tax will pass.
But for more perspective:
The fact is that the E-Tax keeps all of our other taxes LOWER.
Repealing the E-Tax will not encourage new businesses to move to Kansas City. 1% is not a big enough incentive for that.
Kansas has higher property tax, sales tax, and utility tax than Missouri (plus 3/2 beer in the grocery stores, blech) but they are able to steal business from Kansas City because they offer huge tax incentives and land giveaways.
If you drive down State Line Rd from 75th to 135th, you can see that the vast majority of retail businesses prefer the E-Tax to what Kansas has to offer.
There are two ways to grow Kansas City.
1) Put tax payers on the hook like Kay Barnes did with the P&L District, or
2) Improve city services/public school/reduce crime. Encourage people to move back INTO the city.
I appreciate the opportunity to CHOOSE the E-Tax on April 5, but it's a distraction from the real problems this city faces.
I love how many of the post I read are really from people who don't know shit.. 1. Scare tactic? Probably,They will close some Fire Stations and reduce manpower. That alone is scary. These folks don't only go to fires they also are the first ones there for Medical call. We have a horrible crime rate so I also don't want to see any PD cut. 2. Firefighters have not had a pay raise in 3 years. I would not work for a city who thought that way of there employees. 3. With less money for roads, Fire, PD you really think New business is going to come to KC? So if no new business no new jobs.
If anything I would start leaning on the City Counsel to make smart decisions and stop wasting our money.
If etax does not pass. Get ready for the money to come from other places. Like water going up, paying trash, paying bulk pick up. Less fire and police protection do to less man power. And the big one YOUR personnel property tax WILL go up. That 1% doesn't sound do bad now does it.
Good debate but some statements lack the facts. Police are not union, police did not buy a DUI van, it came from grant money not the KC or dept. budgets, $3000 at Capital Grill is grossly exagerated. The $30 M MAST Pension is still to be considered by the council.
If the etax fails, all KC residents will pay more for less. You will have your "1%" put back in your left pocket while you take "3%" out of your right pocket. All while your PD force is cut, fire department is cut, and your general city services are cut. It will be a slow and painful downward spiral to likes of Detroit. So, how is the abolishment of the 1% earnings tax going to bring new buisness to Kansas City? KC won't see new business and it will see less residents as they move out of the city limits--which will mean even less tax dollars on top of the abolished earnings tax. Snowball effect....plain and simple.
Firemen would get a pay raise if the city RIGHT SIZED the fire department.
Scare tactics DEFINATELY.
Too many police. Have you noticed when there's a chase over a stolen car, idle cops from all over town come join in the excitement--as if they weren't doing anything?
Starts to look like the chase in The Blues Brothers--as cops live up to their parody!
Everybody needs to cut back, including government! And the stop light cameras? Since when is government supposed to be making money?
People can't afford these high predatory taxes by bored, marauding collectors driving around. Government's gotten way too big for its britches... and voting NO on the eTax is nothing more than Kansas City's version of Proposition 13.
Who's paying for these ads, anyway?
And why are you doin no help on the "SAY NO", Tony? you used to be so anti tax. What happened? Have your awesome tipsters warned you to stand down? I bet so. So lets not be the pot calling the kettle black in the future!
What a perfect time to thin the herd! More just isn't better!
Cut back government. Cut back health care. LIke we have to cut back eating out and buying toys at Best Buy! It's the new economics. In Wisconsin, Michigan, Kansas and Kansas City, and in the federal government which should be bringing troops and contractors home.
Clinton years are over. We can't afford the cost of "Pleasantville" for a while. Make your kids get a job. Oh wait, Mexicans have them. Every asshole in the world wants our money until it's gone.
social security has not had a pay increase either. Goes to show what the govt thinks of the senior citizens. I did some checking and very few local fire departments recieved pay increases. I thought i would do some research on my own and found some interesting opinions on how fire departments are funded and how much of the total budgets go toward pay and benifits. Most of what i found out just by calling and asking questions amazed me. Do you know that most fire department budgets 80% percent or more is pay and benifits? I also found that most fire departments that run ambulances charge for the treatment and transport patients. What is that income used for? Having used MAST in the past i remember the bill being four or five hundred bucks. I asked several firefighters that i talked to and all from each department gave me the same answer about how many people are on a truck and the tasks that are involved with running medical calls. I even asked about the rumored layoffs and what they thought of the flier for the e-tax and the thought of closing 20 of 35 fire station in kansas city. I found a interesting and sometimes painfully honest answer to the layoffs? "we are looking at layoffs as well and reducing services" The station closures? "i cant see them closing that many stations, maybe reducing the manning levels and rethinking responses" Ambulances in the fire stations? It is what will keep the doors open 75% to 80% of our calls are Medical in nature. I have lots more info and the pay rates are public info and can be had by making a phone call. Will i vote for it? not sure i am still looking at my info. I will tell you that all of the fire men and one woman i spoke to were friendly and were willing to answer my questions.
anon 10:00: Of course they're friendly, they realize that they are making out like bandits in this economy with a high school diploma. You could get the same caliber of employee for 2/3 what they pay these modern day "heroes". I'd work with a shit-eating grin on my face too.
i did ask about education and found out that most departments the fire fighters are college educated, all are trained in EMT/Paramedic before they are hired. Kansas Citys fire department trains all new hires at their facility.
The college amounted to a two year degree and they said the Paramedic class was a two year process that includes ride alongs and hospital time.
I even asked how many hours they work. Some department use a 24hours on and 48 hours off. Lees Summit department has a different schedule but my notes are incomplete. Most work a 56 hour workweek.

ReplyDelete5:23 they WILL close those stations. You can't cut 20 million a year for the next ten years without closing firestations and loosing cops.
ReplyDeleteso they are going to cut over 50% of the stations? Really i think thats a scare tactic.
ReplyDeletei bet there are manpower reductions before station closings.
tell me which ones do you think? will they walk away from downtown or north of the river?
