A big call today from The KC Star Editorial board:
The Star recommends 'yes' vote on earnings tax
On the bright side, for the most part the Star is advocating against their own self-interest given that so many of their employees live in JoCo and are hurt by this town's 1% earnings levy.
If the Kansas City Star endorses the E-Tax then I'm voting NO E-Tax.
ReplyDeleteKansas City Star is all about the politics favoring the rich politically connected.
The Star likes the E-Tax? Just another reason to vote NO on it.
ReplyDeleteTony, you and many other are missing the central argument against an e-tax. An e-tax on the urban core benefits the surrounding community at the expense of the urban core according to the research done by the Show-me Institute. Think about it for a moment and it begins to make sense. The e-tax isn't just a tax on individuals, but, also a tax on businesses. Business owners pay the tax on their personal earnings and on their businesses earnings in addition to the standard business taxes found anywhere else. This e-tax on businesses is what allows the e-tax to remain at 1%. If you strip businesses out of the equation, you have to raise the e-tax on individuals.
ReplyDeleteThis, over time, pushes businesses out of the central city out into the suburbs where they pay business taxes thereby reducing the burden on individuals in the form of sales taxes and property taxes. Ask yourself why North Kansas City can offer relatively low property taxes while kicking our butts on the infrastructure front. There are more businesses per capita in NKC than in KC.
In the end, the Star employees have lower tax burden living in Joco because we continue on with our little e-tax. Now, if only Woody Cozad could grasp this and articulate it, the anti-e-tax crowd might have a chance. The man is an idiot.
I got this from a Kelly Urich joke email I subscribe to. I suppose this isn't really a joke?
ReplyDeleteKCPD has a new $395,000 mobile van that can do 5 breathalyzer tests at once.

City hall is bloated. Repeal the e-tax. Fire some firefighters. Sell some of those gold plated trucks.
ReplyDeleteWhy bother with breathalyzer testing when it's already obvious 50% of this city is over the limit at any given moment of the day.
ReplyDeleteIt's a waste of my easily earned money.
I live up North and almost everyday like clock work the 4 05 5 Fire Fighters pull up and go shopping at Hyvee. I works as a ER nurse, I pack my Lunch or eat at the cafeteria, when I get a chance. Why do I pay an E-Tax to fund gas on an expensive truck for grocery store trips? Can't one person make the store run? How about saving the Taxpayers some money?
ReplyDeleteIn my 36 years in KC the only tax that Star ever opposed was the application of sales tax on newspapers. Go figure.
ReplyDeleteRepeal the etax, give those outside KCMO a tax break. Then triple the cost of water that KCMO sells to them, charge them for the use of KCMO police helicopters, SWAT, and Hazmat.
ReplyDeletefuck what the star thinks!
ReplyDeleteWe're preaching to the choir in here. Its the citizens who watch the propaganda who need to understand about government waste.
ReplyDeleteAu contraire Tony! I beg to differ.
ReplyDeleteNot one person in my department lives in Joco.
You're talking about the editorial and newsroom departments, which make up a small percentage of the employees at the Star.
Then again they do sometimes seem to be the only ones at the Star, given that they have an outlet in the paper to express their stupidity.
Do you actually know how many Mexicans work at the Star? A shitload for sure. Most are working part-time making $8 an hour with no bennie's.
It's fun to watch you bash the Star in the hope they go under while your compatriot's work their asses off. No doubt they'll be the first ones to go if your campaign succeeds.
Haha!
It's a badge of honor at the Star to have made it out of Jackson County and the city.
Please support the No E-Tax vote.
