Prime Buzz tells us that one forecast of voter turnout had it at as DISMALLY LOW 8 percent today.

Kansas City dying on the grapevine of apathy and despair.
ReplyDeleteTrue dat.
ReplyDeleteThe insiders, incumbents, and consultants win again!
ReplyDeleteThanks alot, suckers, and hope that you'll stay home in April so we can keep the gravy train rolling with an extension of the e-tax.
Now drive home through the potholes, try not to get shot, shut up, and leave us alone at 12th and Oak.
See ya in a couple years.
The sad thing is those who win the primary and then go on to win the election will actually believe that they have the majority of Kansas City's 300000 registered voters as their adoring followers and they will go into office with a false sense of grandeur and self entitlement. Once in office, it is our job to watch those bastards and remind them daily that they are no better than the public that elected them. Does this description fit any of the incumbents? We need to stop idolizing our candidates.
ReplyDelete7;17, I think you're complaining on the wrong side. I think you should be angry at the lazy citizens of KC who won't get off their couch long enough to vote. Don't blame the candidates for the low voter turn out. They did their job, they made calls and reminded people to get out and vote. People will bitch about the pothole, but they're too lazy to worry about who runs the city.
ReplyDeleteTrue 7:28 AND 7:17. The reality is that the victorious candidates aren't nearly as approachable to hear your concerns or even give you the time of day AFTER they are in office as they are now grovelling for your vote. Remember, Power Corrupts, Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely. That's what 7:17 was trying to say. Don't give them absolute power.
ReplyDeleteWhat 7:17pm was trying to point out is that city government in KCMO isn't about the public, it's about a small circle of insiders who simply look at the taxpayers as their source of money for whatever projects and dreams they may have. If you analyze the campaigns, all buyt two of the mayoral candidates played the same old tired game: buy some endorsements from little groups like Freedom; grovel for attention from little irrelevant groups like the Citizens' Association; pander to ethnic groups like the black and Latino communities; and try to get all those little numbers of votes to add up to a big enough number that they can get into the finals. In a group of six candidates, you need only about 16% of the votes cast to move to the general. And maybe the little groups added up will get you there.
ReplyDeleteOf course, the campaign then has nothing to do with the vast majority of residents in the city, and the city government certainly has had nothing to do with them for years, so why should people bother voting?
And they don't! Mission accomplished. No one has really paid attention to who got what and why and 12th and Oak reverts back to business as usual.
That's why there's no accountability and no publc pressure to do anything better.
Looks like yet another walk through this same scenario.
Low turnout is why crooks like Kansas City. Easy to manipulate.
ReplyDeleteKC didn't vote. What should that tell you about your 'news judgment', Tee?
ReplyDeleteI could be wrong, but when it comes to readers, city hall workers should only count as 3/5ths of a hit!
Politicians generally despise their constituents. Their appearance of concern is just for show. Inside they are each thinking "Fuck off and DIE already!"
