There was a lot of armchair political consultants making a big deal over Sly James big Northland Cable TV buy . . . To be fair, even experts agreed that cable adverts targeted toward suburbanites wasn't effective.

TKC RECENTLY LEARNED THAT SLY JAMES HAS POSTED 3 MAILERS IN THE PAST 10 DAYS TARGETING VOTERS IN THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY!!!
The ads feature African-American supporters standing with Sly and the research they're doing has put their ads at the doorstep of frequent voters in predominantly African-American Districts.
Sly is making a strong pitch for the denizens of the Kansas City's African-American Community.
Not to be outdone . . . Freedom Inc is putting their full support behind Jim Rowland or at least the strength of their ballot.
FREEDOM INC. IS REPORTEDLY MAKING MORE THAN 2000 PHONE CALLS A NIGHT FOR THEIR CANDIDATES!!!
Those are big numbers but we'll have to see if they can sell Rowland, if support from so many African-American Ministers moves Mike Burke Ahead OR if Sly James and his success story moves the hearts and minds of these Eastside voters.

Sly James, your next Mayor. Take it to the bank. No way he doesn't survive the primary, and in the general, all of the sore-loser support from the two losers among Hermann-Burke-Rowland goes to Sly.
ReplyDeleteSly had to mail to the black community since he has not lived in it for decades, married a white wife, and activity campaigned for a white candidate against Congressman Cleaver in that first election. Now he wants to be black when it might get him somewhere after running away from his race for decades.

ReplyDelete8:46 you dont know what you are talking about. James lives about 100 yrds from Troost ave. As mayor he will be the mayor that has lived closest to troost in the history of KC. This includes Cleaver. He hears the police helicopter three times a week like the rest of us. Get over yourself.

Sly is a good guy. That's all I know about him. He doesn't have much experience but in this crop you can't really argue that experience is a plus.

ReplyDeleteBut claiming that Hyde Park (where Sly lives) is somehow just like the heart of the African American community, because its close to Troost, is pretty silly too.
Troost is a dividing line, but its also frankly much less blighted than most areas of the urban core. Living close to Troost is no more a sign that someone "gets" urban core issues and supports Black interests than living in well-to-do Hyde Park is a sign that they don't "get" it.

ReplyDeleteWith all the new faces of candidates in the black community, Freedom's going to find tha tjust handing out lists of names isn't going to work with residetns who have much more information and who can certainly think for themselves. Who would vote for anybody who has been in office and allowed the deterioration and violence that has taken place on the east side? All this "this is our district" stuff is just the deperate old crowd trying to hang on to their own jobs and a chance to give out tax money to their friends and family. We've cleaned out the school district, and now it's time for the same old folks to go from the city council.

Mr. James has a nice persona. He does not hector the residents at the forums. He does'nt shrug his shoulders at legitimate questions and then demand the enquirer to solve the issue. I like the fact that he is not Funkhouser. I am voting for Mike Burke because besides being a gentleman he is ready to lead our city government.
