Great forum tonight put on by my new "besties" at UMKC . . .
Klassie Alcine (front and center), Russell Anderson, Kaity Claren and even that guy I don't know Mase Hakes (PRIDE KC) along with several other UMKC students and expert time keeper Caleb-Michael Files all did an AMAZING JOB putting together this forum and they really are the new political leadership in Kansas City . . . If we're lucky.
Now . . .
First of all . . . A TKC APOLOGY TO COUNCIL LADY MELBA CURLS, I SCREWED UP HER NAME NOT ONCE BUT TWICE!!!
It didn't seem to hurt her answers. The crowd responded to her quite well and her responses spoke to her reputation and experience.
However, the forum was packed . . . The Council Candidates were questioned in two different sessions with the second set only getting an intro and an opportunity to answer one questions.
For me, Mahlon Davis Jr. stood out with very direct and straight forward answers . . . Also, Ken Bacchus, Dick Davis, Brandon Ellington and Scott Wagner - Who brought a cadre of students did well.
As far as the Mayoral candidates go . . .
THE CROWD LOVES FORMER MAYOR CHARLIE WHEELER AND HE WASN'T AFRAID TO CALL OUT MAYOR FUNKY FOR HOUSING FOIBLES!!!
However, when Mayor Funky responded to a question about "restoring dignity to the Mayor's office" the crowd seemed to visibly retract at the Mayor's anger and his insistence that he is taking Kansas City in the right direction . . . There is all kinds of polling data but there isn't a doubt in my mind that nobody in that room will be voting for Funky as Mayor.
After that all of the candidates seemed professional and had competent answers . . . Even Mayor Funky seemed to calm down.
We'll have a few more insights later, but I wanted to first . . . NATCH.

ReplyDeleteI met Mahlon Davis tonight and he was a better nice guy, and I did like his answer. So far So good for me with him. Also like Mr Wheeler my be past his prime but he had me laughing, glad to meet all the candidates tonight.

ReplyDeleteDon't know about his answer because he only answered once, but he had on a nice suit. I wish they would have let all the council people that was on the 2nd wave answer more then just one question.
What about the mayors?
ReplyDeleteMaybe the real contest here is to try to run this election so far into the ground that all the candidates will be exhausted.
ReplyDeleteAnd the winners will be declared when only one is left standing. The rest will be home, asleep, with a rerun of CSI on the tellie.

Mahlon is going to beat Circo. She hasn't done anything this term excpet fight with the Mayor and try to build that stupid hotel. Our neighborhood asked her for help with a project and she basically told us she thought it was great and call me for the ribbon cutting. We didn't want money, we wanted help with the city hall log jam. It was clear she isn't in the habit of being a participant until the time to take photos and credit comes. I guess it wasn't high enough profile like the hotel but it wasn't chicken feed either.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many people at these forums that it is hard to really help make up your mind. In-districts should have exclusive forums so the only people who can vote for them can attend and get in more detail. At-large and Mayor should be in their own venue so people can get a feel for their broader knowledge and ideas,

When dealing with Melba Curls, pronoucing her name isn't the most important thing. Taking her temperature to make sure she's still alive tops the list.
