For better or worse, everything in Kansas City comes down to voting blocs.
Voters can lament the situation but, again, here's why it exists: Voter turnout in Kansas city is so low that only voting blocs, political groups and clubs can reliably deliver numbers to a given election. Unions, Biz Concerns and Multi-millionaires like Rex Sinquefield can afford to blanket the town with advertisements and hope their message spreads among the populace at large . . . BUT, the most reliable way of earning local votes for decades has been picking up endorsements from small groups of special interests i.e. the only people who consistently vote.
In minority communities these groups often taken political hits but the same kind of groups exist across all cultural lines in Kansas City. They might not think so but Forward KC pretty much doing the same thing as any other special interests.
It's the cost of doing business.
And all of this is prelude to simply note:
"Jim Rowland now has two MAJOR minority groups that have endorsed---Freedom and Hispanic Chamber."
Again, for folks who wished Democracy in Kansas City would work some other way should work on increasing voter turnout.
Until that time, small special interests and various political fiefdoms will continue to rule the local political scene.
And in Kansas City's Minority Community . . . These groups are obviously leaning toward Jim Rowland.
I don't think anyone will mind TKC revealing that the membership of La Raza Political Club - The most influential group in Kansas City's Latino Community is considering Jim Rowland, Mike Burke and Sly James (in that order) with a few folks leaning toward Deb Hermann.
Still, at this point in the election . . . Jim Rowland is making serious advancement in minority communities outpacing Mike Burke (A candidate that works with an African-American campaign manager) and Sly James (Obviously, the only person of color currently running for Mayor) . . .
Real talk: People discount it but Rowland is the only candidate for Mayor so far to seriously address the topic crime in Kansas City. His promise to visit every murder scene should he be elected hasn't been taken seriously but in the public forums it looks like an honest effort to express how important topic is to him . . . And if he even comes halfway close to keeping his word on this statement than I have a feeling he'll keep his support in Kansas City's minority community.
Developing . . .
The next thing you know dogs will start sleeping with cats.
ReplyDeleteIts not just the crime thing, its that Rowland is the only one of the candidates who has actually DONE anything for minority communities. Burke is a nice guy and has made friends with some important people in the black community, but didn't do anything for the east side when he was on the council in the 80s. James is obviously a smart guy and means well (and is black), but he doesn't have a record of doing anything for blacks or Latinos. (Remember that commercial he did for Jamie Metzl? Can't really say you're for black political empowerment after that...) Funkhouser has been a total failure at everything. And Hermann is a Northlander who has not done stuff on the issues that matter to minorities. She wants to spend more money up north, with almost by definition means less for minority neighborhoods.
ReplyDeleteWhoever it is they will be better than Funky.

ReplyDeleteThe Candidates must answer the question How Much Does Lali Get?
Then La Raza can answer the question "Who do we support?"
Money,Money,Money...Money!
ReplyDeleteHow much will Rowland pay for this endorsement? What has Rowland done? He was there for 8 years, where did that get them?
ReplyDeleteBig Jim is going to learn an important lesson which he should have known long before now.
ReplyDeleteEconomics 101 Freedom has a motto --"A fool and his money are soon parted and we like to make trim lap dogs when ever we can."
The real black votes will follow a suggestion from Mr Peanut.
But what if some of the candidates motivate enough regular voters to actually come out and vote and there turn out to be more of them that the low turnouts from the usual blocs?
ReplyDeleteCould be a whole new ballgame!
His only problem is Pat Gray.
ReplyDeletegood for funkhouser to win
ReplyDeleteRowland - Sly - Deb neck and neck. Burke toast. Funk wins.
ReplyDeleteNOTE TO ALL CANDIDATES! Clearly Some have given TEE smaller, more tasteful, attactive photos of yourselves.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Public Relations 101.
1. Given him more THUMBNAILs, NOT TOO FULL SCREEN.
2. Give him several, fairly non descript, in attractive colors, some very formal, some informal. Smiling, not smiling. Funlike, serious. But always fairly small size. 250kb or less, not full size not full screen.
Just Look at how he protrays people already! badly. So give him THUMBNAILS, mostly. If he has adverse photos already, make sure he has plenty of better, more business-like ones.
And JUMP HIM HARD if he shows you adversely! Every time!
I think any PR advisor would not suggest you pose with adversaries or others, casually, for Tonys' camera. Or Others. They'll probably NOT be used to your political advantage. So avoid the casual snapshots at various events!
Especially in a party atmosphere for you will indeed pay for those!
But most especially, if TEE shows you adversely in his site, make sure he as better photos of you than that one, fer sure!
Google yourself in IMAGES large and medium. If you're not shown well, you have a serious PR problem, dont you! So give bloggers better pictures or pay the price!
rman sed it
If Jimmy and Glo are counting on the East side they are toast.

ReplyDeleteRowland bought Freedom...big deal. That community can't even figure out a decent candidate for council, let alone mayor. But they still won't be fooled by a phony like Rowland or a suck up like Burke. If they are smart, they will vote for Hermann as only she can beat Funk.
ReplyDeleteIf it snows east side and northeast ain't going anywhere. Or the west side. Maybe that's the plan...
ReplyDeleteThe definition of an honest organization is one that stays bought once the check clears, but if I were Rowland I wouldn't count on these folks. Serves him right for working the same old system with the same old folks and hoping the result will be different.
ReplyDelete50 grand for a handful of votes. Not a good start for someone who promises to change things and run an efficient operation.
split the vote, funkhouser win
ReplyDeleteLa Raza = mexican niggers acting like niggers and holdin they hand out fo mo money! money, money, money!!!!
