RDM critique: "Kansas City Mayor Mark Funkhouser's '3-1-1 Action Center' is a joke."

Today the Sun is gonna melt more snow on my block than Kansas City ever removed.

That's just a fact of life all over Kansas City despite claims of improved snow removal.

To wit . . .

KANSAS CITY BLOGGER RDM WRITES A SCATHING CRITIQUE OF KANSAS CITY SNOW REMOVAL WITH PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE OF THE FAIL!!!

The post is a classic for this Winter season and certainly proves that Mayor Funky's promise of improved City Services is nothing more than a cruel joke.

This is one brilliantly compiled complaint that has been expressed time and again by so many other voices as well despite one denial after the next from the outgoing Mayor.

  1. T,

What would make my day is the last two words of your post. Please. I hope it will be true.

  2. Mayor Mark Funkhouser- A City Made Worse1/27/11, 8:55 AM

The "quick close" on Action Center tickets is a well known City practice under Funky.

The job performance of the service departments (public works, building codes, neighborhood and community services) is gauged by how many requests for service they close.

There is no longer any type of "qualitative" measure of the response. Just how many tickets did you close.

Under Kay Barnes, if you submitted a request for service when the ticket closed you would get a post card from the City asking you to evaluate the service provided. This ensured the City inspectors and service personnel wouldn't just close cases willy nilly, which is the present practice.

  3. Yeah, on May 23, 2009 a truck destroyed stop sign and a fire hydrant in my neighborhood at at Pacific and Troost.

    It was immediately reported.

They came out and replaced the stop sign right away.

The city removed the fire hydrant, and just left the valve stem sticking up out of the ground.

They haven't been back to fix it since, it spite of numerous phone calls requesting that they do so.

So much for a "City That Works".

  4. The City totally punted on the complaints of the Mayor's illegal sign and illegal business operation as TKC reported a month or so ago.

That's pretty much what you can expect from just about ALL Action Center requests.

  5. The Deb Hermann/Mark Funkhouser budget cuts and lay offs are responsible for the state of SHITTY services.

  7. I continue to be puzzled by what we expect. It seems posters/bloggers want the politicians to

    1. Balance the budget even in economic downturn.
    2. Don't raise taxes
    3. Cut taxes, if possible
    4. Don't cut anything from the budget.

How is this supposed to happen?

  8. Citizen's Want the City to1/27/11, 10:46 AM

    1) Take seriously its responsibility for keeping its service promises.
    2) Fairly and equitably enforce the laws and ordinances that are on the books. This means committing resources (time. money and people) AND KEEPING WITH IT.
    3) Ensure that City resources are spent first and foremost on honoring the obligations to its citizens
    4) Understand that cutting programs and services (like bulky item pick up) has not only fiscal consequences, but also results in a new system that is both frustrating for users and has other negative side effects that affect the quality of life and that also have fiscal consequences (i.e. illegal dumping, junk sitting on the streets and sidewalks for weeks at a time, trash getting blown all over, etc.).
    5) Most people will make an effort to follow rules and program requirements as long as they can figure them out. STOP FUCKING WITH THE THINGS THAT WORK.

  13. I would call the TIF recipients and ask them to pitch in to improve services. They're getting all our cash.
