KANSAS CITY FACT: MAYOR FUNKY WAITED TILL SECOND TERM TO FIGHT CRIME!!!

Mayor Funky has been running around town repeating another empty promise regarding local crime despite his lackluster record on the subject: “Making Kansas City the safest big city in America is my number one priority for my second term,” Mayor Funky says.

There's a lot of really valid reasons why this talking point shouldn't be trusted. However, today Steve Penn notes Mayoral candidate Henry Klein calling out the cheap election season talk from the incumbent:

"I'm not going to wait until my second administration before I take this situation seriously," Klein said. "The situation has only gotten worse. If you haven’t been effective, then maybe its time to give someone else an opportunity to make an impact."

Klein is correct and in calling out the Mayor on this bit of propaganda; he makes it painfully clear that Mayor Funky has been more interested in fighting for the rights of his wife rather than working with the community stop crime.

  2. Before the Funk goes around making new campaign promises, he needs to work on keeping his original one, "A city that works."

  3. The high crime rate has been going on for years; murder and unsolved crime is not new. How many people have to die or how long do crimes need to go unsolved before someone takes note.

The horse is already out of the barn.

This is an utterly superficial and hollow campaign ploy, plain and simple. Funkhouser's "plan" is:
    1. Schools First, which has been DOA since its introduction.
    2. New Tools, which may have been a good idea, but has had no buy-in from anyone.
    3. Hire more police, which will do more of what the KCPD already do, which is to ride around and not interact in any way with resident, resulting in no information, and a homicide clearance rate of only 42%.
    4. But the PD more nifty new stuff which they'll use to generate more data to show what a great job they're doing.
    5. Suppport neighborhoods, even though the city's financial support of the Community Action Centers had actually DECREASED during his tenure and there is really only one operating in the city.
And he most recently decided to fund "Parents of Murder Victims" as an organization that is involved in "public safety" because the spokesman endorsed him in the election.
A dog-and-pony show by any measure!
In the fours years he's been in office, there have been over 400 residents of his city murdered.

    The news will break today.

James B. Nutter Sr. has endorsed Anne McGregor in the 4th District at Large council contest.

  6. It's OK to fight crime, except remember: No raids of hispanic establishments. That is taboo. Also no enforcement of United States immigration laws. That would be racist. No traffic stops on Ward Parkway. You might accidentally arrest a rich drunk. Better hammer those jaywalkers.

  7. Unless the main media has its nose completely up the PD's ass (which is common since the PD gives the TV most of their news and TV is well aware the PD can punish a station that's too, uh, journalistically aggressive), the KCPD really isn't doing so bad.

Other than the high speed chases over stolen cars that endanger citizens... but even so, lately, they've done so much better as I watched the last one on Channel 9. Patiently following, not too fast. Hope that's true and that the PD isn't just more secretive after that one ending in a crash on 71.

But I'm not hearing about a lot of abuse, not seen any abuse cases in the media. We all wish police would be more patient with crazy people who need help, not killing though. KC doesn't seem as paramilitary as some others seen nationally though.

If there's a lot of abuse, then the community's not getting it to the bloggers who SHOULD pick those up.

This community policing idea's always a good one--somebody on here advocates it but not in detail.

Still. Hope they try it MORE in the innercity without delay.

Corwin seems like an open minded guy. Course all it takes is one huge embarrassment the media can't afford to ignore.

I do agree that police supervision should be closer to the people than a state appointed board but note the board members are easily found.

I'd be fine if it was returned to the city council where it really belongs.

I'm not pro law-and-order but I'm not pro-anarchy either. So I'll sign anonymously.

  8. The Funk read some local blogs and decided this is what he should do, finally, focus on "crime".

Uh, yeah, thanks, Funk, thanks for finally paying attention...

    ...now that you need votes.

  9. He has clearly shown that his number one priority is his wife. At one point he stopped going to work!
His family has shown nothing but contempt for the people of Kansas City.

They are a Wiccan family that gives each other toy penises for Christmas.
    Are these your values?

  13. Wait a second, isn't Byron the funks brother? He must be pissed he didn't get his toy pecker. Or they know he enjoys a real one better...
