TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! JIM ROWLAND PAYS FACEBOOK BUT SOCIAL MEDIA WON'T WIN THE KANSAS CITY MAYORAL RACE!!!
I want to put this out there right now, and it's important that EVERYBODY in Kansas City politics understands it:
NEITHER THE INTERNET NOR SOCIAL MEDIA WILL MAKE MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE IN THE UPCOMING KANSAS CITY COUNCIL AND/OR MAYORAL ELECTION!!!
It's nice to have fans and friends online, and it's also great that local politicos are catching up to tweens when it comes to technology. But a "social media" strategy just isn't going to win many if any votes.
A KICKASS TKC TIPSTER exposes Mayoral Candidate Jim Rowland's efforts:
"Most people on Facebook collect friends for free. Why would you pay to have your 7th grade boyfriend or that person that sits three cars behind you in the school carpool line "friend" you? Apparently Jim Rowland didn't get that memo, because he has spent nearly $600 on Facebook!!!"

The money is probably for Facebook ads which I've never clicked once. So good luck to him.
Furthermore, a better strategy would have been to get the consulting company he's paying big bucks to do some work on collecting a decent amount of friend -- So far he's in the low hundreds.
Without question Rowland has been the most lackadaisical and lazy campaigner in Kansas City's Mayoral Race and it doesn't really seem like he wants the job.
Still, I think TKC qualifies as an expert regarding the waste of time and money on the Internet and Rowland's Facebook, social media and online strategy is simply a losing effort.

Except when he's campaigning for office. Then he makes himself ACT charming.
We'd have the same dysfunction between the Mayor and Council that we have today.
Rowland is for real.

ReplyDeleteBased on the fact that it is $600 (instead of $500 or $1000) I have a pretty strong hunch on what it is for. The left column of facebook is scattered with things that you can like based on your information. When you click like you become a fan. Then the campaign can post updates to your newsfeed. These ads can be extremely targeted and are actually pretty high return on investment compared to direct mail, radio, etc. The current price for the ads is right around sixty cents for everyone who clicks "like."
