Here's the background: Not even KCPD want more cops paid for out of sales tax money because it is too unstable and doesn't set them up to make solid gains in employment that will be maintained over the years.
But that isn't stopping Mayor "Tax And Spend" Funky and his shilling in order to try and achieve a political victory.
Here's a desperate political presser send out in advance of the latest Co-Mayor Squitiro and Funkhouser Failure:
Subject: Your Chance to Be Heard on Public Safety in Kansas City
Dear Friends,
"We need some quick action at City Hall.
"Now is the time for your voice to be heard. Tomorrow, July 28, you can let the City Council know how you feel about public safety and crime.
"The Public Safety and Neighborhoods Committee will meet at 10 a.m. to gather public input on the Kansas City Public Safety Sales Tax. I and several other City Council members believe a small part of the tax should be used to hire more police officers.
"You should come to testify:
* If you believe the city should use some of that money to hire more officers to protect our streets.
* If you believe the city should use some of that money to build new police stations on the City's east side and in Platte County.
* If you believe the city should renew the tax in November and issue bonds with the money in order to build these projects now and put Kansas Citians to work.
* If you want to do all this without raising taxes above that already approved by voters.
* If you have other thoughts about this important city decision.
"Approved by voters in 2002, the quarter-cent Public Safety Sales Tax has, among other things, financed construction of a new Police Academy and two new patrol stations. Now we need to provide the officers to fill them.
"The public hearing is tomorrow, July 28, at 10 a.m., on the 26th floor of City Hall in front of the City Council’s Public Safety and Neighborhoods Committee.
"If you are unable to testify, but would like to show your support, here is my phone number and email address and the contact information for members of the Public Safety and Neighborhoods Committee.
"Please let us know your thoughts.

Somebody wake Kendrick!
ReplyDeletea cop rally will be great for the cameras, cops and wives and brothers in law!
ReplyDeleteBut will they vote for the Funky?
The City does not oversee KCPD, it is governed by the State. The City only provides 30% of KCPD's budget. I think that the Mayor is overstepping his bounds.
ReplyDeletefunkhouser oversteps his bounds everytime he drives into city hall's garage.
ReplyDeleteThis is the same scam that they ran in 2002. Kansas City did not get additional police officers when we passed this before. Vote No.
ReplyDeleteThere are plenty of Cops they are just not on the streets. They all are hanging out in the bushes trying to catch you driving 36 in 35 mile zone. Put those Fat bastards to work.
ReplyDeleteEvery single week of the year at least two residents are murdered in KCMO. The notion that the elected city officials have the luxury of sitting on the sidelines and taking no action to at least publically debate some creative ideas of using police resources to curb the violence is placing way too much emphasis on the nicelties of government structure and process.
ReplyDeleteWhat about a joint meeting with the council, mayor, police board, and chief to bring the horsepower and emphasis to this crisis?
How about the fact that cops don't even respond to calls in a timely fashion to begin with? We didn't need the cops OR city council to help us rid our neighborhood of gang violence. We came together as a neighborhood and made phone calls to the owners of the houses who were renting them out to the gangs. We put enough pressure on the landlords that they evicted the troublemakers. Can we PLEASE stop asking for more $$$ when you don't do ANYTHING positive with it, City Council????
ReplyDeleteOust them all, already!!
The FUNKHOUSER SUICIDE WATCH continues.
ReplyDeleteI will never support the Public Safety Sales tax. We have had a Homicide Rate out the kazoo for years. KCPD has a Ton of Officers they just sit behind desks. NO MORE TAXES. Do not support poor performance.
