Check Out The Upcoming Police & Public Safety Sales Tax Resolution

Thanks to THE MOST AWESOME TKC TIPSTERS we have an advanced look at an upcoming ordinance sponsored by Councilpeople Ford, Gottstein & Sharp.

Sure, everybody wants more cops . . . However, not even the KCPD is solid on paying for more officers with Sales Tax money because the funding is so unstable. Long story short . . . This isn't a move that's "smart with the money" and is just another example of the tax and spend mentality at City Hall.

Also, food for thought: Why Is Ed Ford So Cozy With Mayor Funky All Of A Sudden?

Word is, this resolution has Mayor Funky and Kendrick's fingerprints all over it but was adopted and sponsored Ed Ford because the Mayor doesn't even have enough political capital to give away free ice cream . . . Still, take a look at text and remember this town is completely out of cash.

Check it:

Whereas Kansas City’s capital improvements sales tax (commonly referred to as the Public Safety Sales Tax) will expire in June of 2011, and

Whereas Kansas City Police Department officers are dispatched to nearly 400,000 calls each year, and spend approximately 79 percent of their time running from call to call, a much higher percentage than in many other cities, andWhereas citizens of Kansas City are at much higher risk of being victims of violent crime or property crime than citizens in many other cities its size, as well as citizens in some larger cities with reputations as high crime areas, and

Whereas in 2008 among America’s largest cities only Baltimore, Detroit, New Orleans, Oakland, St. Louis and Washington, D.C., reported higher rates of murder and non-negligent manslaughter than Kansas City, and

Whereas Kansas City citizens have a right to expect a safe community, and

Whereas, Senate Bill 981 (hereinafter “Senate Bill 981”) has been passed by the Missouri General Assembly and signed by the Governor to give Kansas City the flexibility of using a renewed public safety sales tax for hiring additional police officers in addition to financing capital improvements, and

Whereas the citizens of Kansas City, through citizen surveys and public testimony, are asking for an increased police presence in their neighborhoods, NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI:

Section 1: That the City Council recognizes the need to hire additional police officers as well as the need to complete new public safety capital improvements

Section 2: That the City Council intends to place a renewal of the Public Safety Sales Tax on the November 2010 ballot to fund needed public safety capital improvements and to add police officers.

  3. Kansas City police lack the initiative to fight crime in our city.

  4. KCPD has had a poor performance record for years now, They seem to have resources for ticking jaywalkers during the NAACP conference but not for solving the homicide rate. KCPD lacks a innovative vision for Kansas City.

  5. This is AFL-CIO driven crap. This is Funky blowing the cops and labor for whatever they'll give him.

  9. How is the city out of cash when they can spend $500K for a hotel study, $300K to subsidize a trolley for drunks, $300K for Aim4Peace, and on and on?
If they had some strategy and set of priorities, it would be more predictable as to how money could be spent and easier to tell people NO when they come with their hands out for some pet project.
KCMO is run like a middle school club.

  10. I agree with all of it. No mo money for the coppers. Most of them have very arrogant attitudes.

  11. It's not the cops who are after this, it's Funk making a campaign play with taxpayer money. Ford took the resolution straight from 29 and erased Kendrick's name and put his own on it. Tony is right on with his question, why are the mayor and ed so cozy?

  12. I would have to agree Kansas City police are not performing well. The murder rate has been high for years now.

  13. Quit rewarding city departments that are under performing. There is no excuse for having a murder rate this high in KCMO. Other cities have implemented programs that have worked in reducing crime, KCPD has failed Kansas City and it's citizens.

  14. I agree KCPD has failed the Kansas City community log enough. Quit rewarding failure.

    ReplyDelete
  15. KCPD has failed the citizen of Kansas City.
