The TKC Weekly Power Rankings

This was a powerful week in Kansas City Politics. Maybe not as strong as Samantha Baker but still pretty intense. Here are the folks who came up with some of the most noteworthy power plays . . .

POLITICOS

1. Gloria Squitiro - She is interviewing judges simply because she's the Mayor's wife. For a "volunteer" that is very powerful.

2. City Council Dude John Sharp - The not so great "Ticket Master" of the City Council says he might tear up his tickets next time around because KICKASS TKC TIPSTERS found them for sale on the Internets which is a wasteful but powerful gesture.

3. City Council Lady Cathy Jolly - The Council Lady is working to keep Kansas City safe and a local company might benefit . . . Sadly, that company is in Overland Park.

4. Duane Kelly - The kindly dude who looks like a druid is still on The School Board. Good for him.

5. Alvin Brooks - Would you be surprised to another Brooks run for Mayor? Don't be.

NEWSIES

1. Micheal Mahoney - Still The Gold Standard in local reporting.

2. Kris Ketz - By far, Kansas City's favorite journalist using Twitter.

3. DeAnn Smith - TKC Tipsters say she starts her job as a Web Editor at KMBC on Tuesday and she just might be what moves that company's web ranking into even higher numbers.

4. Eric Wesson - Every week he is documenting the voices in Kansas City's urban core and African-American community at The Call. He's doing even more excellent work and a great many people are taking note.

5. Joe Arce - At every important event for the local, Latino Community. Joe is on the scene and taking powerful photographs for The Kansas City Hispanic News.

LOCAL TV PROGRAMS

1. The Week In Review with Nick Haines - Must Watch TV for anybody interested in local issues.

2. Ruckus - I really like how this Kansas City chat show is mixing up their variety guests in order to give an even broader perspective of local opinion.

3. After Hours KC - My favorite local entertainment show that goes out so I don't have to.

4. Que Pasa TV - The local, Latino TV program of record from KCTV5.

5. The Power of KC - A Local TV program with what is likely the best user interface of all these local shows. Look for good stuff from this crew in the future.

As always, these rankings are the result of TKC SCIENTIFIC STUDIES AND MARKET RESEARCH DATA and represent the most accurate and powerful list in this cowtown.

  4. "TKC Tipsters found the tickets" as if they were on your payroll?

I suspect somebody wanted to embarrass the 'council dude', did the legwork and sent you a tip knowing you'd dutifully print it.

I still think you didn't finish the story and now you're spinning it to take credit for it. You're tipster could have published it anywhere, or called the Star. or any of the TV stations. But then, journalists would check it out before going with it.

That the target often gives the tickets away pretty much took the legs out of what would have been very sensational story. I've seen your last two days since Mahoney cleared it up as major backpeddling, T.

There's still a bit more to the story yet untold, but I haven't seen you report it. I assume the target isn't likely to give you a scoop since you tried to screw him with a half baked story.

What were those mumblings about the ticket scalping was making its rounds at city hall before you published... that someone just sent you a memo that was already circulating?

If that's true, then youre taking credit for something you didn't initiate.

Is Tony now Live and Investigative? I didn't notice you include the O'Jays "Backstabbers" among your Sat night playlist offerings. Seems that should always been on your weekly lists.

  5. OK Radioman, you're getting really annoying with all these long winded comments. And again, Tony posted the facts on John Sharp's stupid comp tickets. The End. Now, lets see Radioman post something informative. Maybe even get a few hits on his own blog. While TKC enjoys the spotlight shining on his blog, Radioman may only wish for an occasional visitor to his blog. Then once that visitor logs on to Radio Man's Kansas City, which always takes a minute or twenty to load, that visitor then decides to return to TKC because Radioman's blog sucks-and, he posts more crap on TKC's comment boards than on his own blog. That's professional journalism? Or is it bitter jealousy? You decide. . .

  7. Radioman,
Good comments, as usual. It's easy to piece together if you look at the date on the memo about ticket scalping that was sent to the council and mayor the day BEFORE Tony first "published" his half-baked story. So, the memo went out the day before Tony's story.

The other part to the story is that, for a long time, Tony has had a "tipster" (everyone knows it's Beth Gottstein) who forwards him any council correspondence he might find interesting (ie: be able to use to smear someone). This has been going on for a while.

So, the memo gets forwarded, the story is already out and legit new outlets are working on it, making follow-up phone calls, checking things out and doing what legit reporters do. While they are doing that, half-baked Tony types it up as fast as he can and "publishes" it.

Did Tony get the story "first"? Why yes, he did, but not because he broke the story or had some awesome investigative "tipster' but only because he was willing to transcribe and hit "publish" half a story while the legit reporters were still doing the legwork to get a full story.

EVEN TONY ADMITS (if you read between the lines) that it was the city, not his lame-ass "tipster" who discovered the ticket scalping. (Or, he uses weasel words when talking about how the scalping was discovered.)

Tony's "tipsters" are much more pathetic than he would lead you to believe. Seems like their only skill is the ability to hit "forward" and type in Tony's e-mail addy whenever something smear-worthy comes in. Whoo.

As you so astutely pointed out, the reason these schmucks (oh, excuse me, "tipsters") forward shit to this creep is because they know he is salivating to publish a smear and will do so almost instantly without checking anything out. It's not because Tony is better that he gets "tips" like this, it's because he's so bad he's not even worthy of being called a hack.

  9. Tell us more about Chris Moreno's next move. He confounds his critcs and the Demo Establishment.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Moreno has a plan to take back Eastern Jackson County from conservative bastards like Sanders, LeVota and Callahan. Moreno could take the so called-Democrat Party for real Democrat liberals like we know in KC. Moreno was trashed by these poeple because he is the best and because he understands what being a Democrat really means. Follow Chris.

  11. Well if Beth is just forwarding all memos that would embarrass city government officials, the obvious strategy is to EXCLUDE BETH until she learns how to behave.

I have never known a city council member so lacking in the best interest of the council as a body, to be such an unabashhed asshole as to continually embarrass elected officials!

Frankly I expect it's NOT Beth, but some salaried bureaucrat who hates his job his bosses authority, his own lack of authority, and the democratic process!

Yes, I expect Tony's awesome tipster is way more petty than that... and if city council members know who it is, they shoudl fire him immediately.

With cause, if possible so he can't get unemployment compensation. Spies have no honor and should be accorded no slack! Moreover, backstabbers should always pay the price for their disloyalty!

  12. How long will it take for Chris Benjamin to get fed up with Chris Moreno and fire him, just like the HDCC did?

Chris Moreno can spend a lot of time putting positive comments about himself on this blog, but it does not change the fact that he was fired for poor performance.

Since that time he has tried to coerce Democratic candidates into hiring him by threatening to work for their opponents or to launch third party mailings against them. Chris Moreno is an utter scumbag, who needs to see the inside of a jail cell for a very long time.

  13. Chris Moreno left the House Democrats because he knew that Talboy and Victor Callahan are both likely to be indicted before the November Election. He picked his time to leave and he left. It is slimey for Talboy and Callahan to stalk Chris on this and other blogs by placing negative comments about him every time a friend praises him.
