I was lucky enough to get a phone call from Missouri State Representative Leonard Jonas Hughes IV yesterday and the nearly hour long conversation changed my perception about his chances in the upcoming Mayoral race.
I know him as Jonas because not too long ago my brother helped him campaign for his first term in office. Years later, Hughes has won re-election again and again and he's one of the fastest rising stars among Kansas City's African-American political elite. Think about this long and hard: It's likely that he will be the youngest man in the Mayor's race when he steps on stage with the rest of the candidates.
The most important part of our conversation was simply going over his motivation to run for Mayor.
He isn't backed by any other elected official or club.
He's not running as a "decoy," his campaign is an honest attempt to seek the office of Kansas City Mayor.
The idea for a Mayoral Run was his own.
"Why do I need any other motivations than my own?," Hughes asks. "That should be good enough, it's a bit condescending and doesn't acknowledge everything I've accomplished."
From there Hughes talked about a bevy of Kansas City issues ranging from a high tech approach to sewer repair and then covering different strategies to encourage International business in Kansas City. Within a few moments of talking to Hughes I quickly realized that so far he's the only candidate bringing any energy or enthusiasm to the Mayoral race.
"The future of Kansas City is bright if we can move past this gridlock and so many negative feelings now dominating City Hall," Hughes said.
Thinking about the way the Mayor's race breaks down I was almost ashamed of myself for not taking the Candidacy of Hughes more seriously from the outset.
The Northland is now split three ways between Mike Burke, Deb Hermann and the last few dudes in their garage supporting Mayor Funky. The Primary will now be decided South of the River . . . And in that area, The Eastside is the most significant voting bloc.
Now . . .
No one can deny Sly James has fund-raising skill and political acumen but Hughes has proven he can get thousands of votes on the Eastside. Like it or not, it's a matter of fact that the young man is a more experienced elected official than James. Furthermore, it only takes one significant bloc of votes for a candidate to make it past the primary in such a crowded field. If the folks who have voted for Hughes in the past, cast their ballot his way again his odds just keep getting better. The more I thought about it, the more Hughes seems even more viable as a contender who MUST be taken seriously.
There's more news to related to the Hughes campaign that I'll save for later but as of this writing it's obvious to me that this well-qualified elected official isn't being given the respect he deserves not only by potential voters but also from the media.
Developing . . .
I'd buy that for a dollar.
ReplyDeleteIf you have to start your campaign by saying you are not a plant or decoy, then you do not have a campaign.
ReplyDeleteIt is possible that Hughes just does not know he is a decoy, because he has never been the brightest bulb in the pack.
What in the world does Jonas Hughes know about "encouraging International business in Kansas City?" What a joke! How can anything about Kansas City be taken seriously if this is the type of candidate that has even a remote chance of getting elected Mayor. Thank you FUNKHOOSIER!
ReplyDeleteBlack mo fuggin power.
ReplyDeleteThe Eastside is not the biggest voting bloc south of the river. That would be the hipster, wanna-be chic 4th district (Plaza, Brookside, etc.). Turnout is so much higher there, usually more than twice that in the Eastside wards. Even when the Freedom wards vote 85-90% for a candidate, they produce fewer votes combined than does a 60% vote in the 4th district.
ReplyDeleteSo that kinda shoots your Jonas theory to hell. Even if it weren't ridiculous as it was, because Jonas is kind of a loser.
Doesn't he take the short bus to the meetings in Jeff City?
ReplyDeleteShort bus or not, Jonas is a good cat. Fucked up grill, but a good cat.
ReplyDeleteJonas Hughes is becoming my favorite candidate in the race. He's a fresh voice.
ReplyDeleteJonas is a rat who is being used as a spoiler, he has a do nothing record as a State Legislator to overcome , plus do some research look at his attendance record. He is a pawn.
ReplyDeleteDon't insult the 4th district. The best Councilpeople live there.
ReplyDeleteI heard something otherwise. I heard a prominent local businessman called him and offered to fund a campaign if he'd get in. Will be interested to see if I heard right when his reporting is available.
ReplyDeletehasn't he missed like a million votes in jeff city? somebody should look at his record
ReplyDeleteMaybe because I live in the Northland and support Deb, I don't think it will be split three ways. I hope Burke gets out. He can't win. And a vote for Funk is throwing your vote away. I don't talk to many supporters of his anymore.
ReplyDeleteWho represents the 4th district?
ReplyDeleteHe doesnt live in his district , it will all come out like lying about his college.Jonas you should get a commission for the papers you are going to sell with your lies.
ReplyDeleteAll the haters out there sound like a few of the other State Rep dreamers who wish they had the balls to do something more than hiding in Jefferson City and telling their constituents these stories about their accomplishments. If they had any guts they would come on here and name them but they can't because they have none.
ReplyDeleteRepresentative Hughes has the energy and the knowledge to get things done and build the coalition necessary for Kansas City. He will be a formidable candidate and will run an exceptional campaign.

I'm sure he's a swell fellow, but I wouldn't bet money on it because...
I had the honor of standing in front of his dad for my first DUI way back when.
I didn't have any money or a job and was crashing on a friends couch.
No job = no money. No money = no lawyer.
His dad wouldn't even look at me, let alone talk to me without a lawyer present.
While standing in front of his dad, who was ignoring me, Sr. told his bailiff to go out in the hall and find me a lawyer. The bailiff grabs this bewildered dude in a suit and drags him into the courtroom and Judge Hughes asked him how I pleaded.
I could go on and on. It was comical, in a Jewish kind of way. You know, laugh your way to the death chamber, Roberto Benigni kind of funny.
Anyway, I got off with a fine and other fun stuff. 6 months later I got tossed up against the wall in a low rent apartment complex with about 10 other Section 8 losers by the only Latino cop in the Northland who ran me through the system and found a warrant on me for violating my probation because I hadn't paid all of my $350 fine.
(The cop told me if I would of given him a heads up that I had a warrant, he would of let me slide for a week to give me a chance to take care of the fine. As it was, he had to haul me in because they knew he had me in custody by then)
I was screwed big time. For violating my probation I could get 90 days in the pokey. Not good.
I ended up spending Friday night to Monday morning in the tank downtown. Which actually wasn't so bad, as jails go anyway. On Saturday, a kid (He was 18) who had got busted in Mill Creek park for skateboarding, got tossed in with us.
He was scared shitless. He wasn't scared of us though, he was scared of the cops because they failed to notice the big bag of pot he had stashed under his balls and he was afraid of getting his butt whipped when they found out that he forgot to mention few details to the arresting officer. Fortunately for him, me and my jailhouse buddy were more than willing to take it off of his hands.
We soon discovered that those pink property receipts that they give you made perfectly good rolling papers. We sat under the camera next to the toilets and smoked the weekend away.
I highly recommend a little reefer if you're gonna be locked up for awhile. Those baloney sandwiches and cinnamon rolls were mighty tasty after that.
Anyway, I was the only guy who didn't get to go to court, although I did get the tour of the underground tunnel.
In the end, Hughes Sr. gave me 180 days at the farm. I was out in 35, thanks to a my mom who cleaned office buildings on 63rd and knew this really old lawyer who knew every cop and prosecutor in the city. He made one call and I was soon out.
I guess I should of mentioned that I got my DUI after my buddy pulled got pulled over and hauled off and I went to the pokey and got his keys and then went back and got his car and drove back to the pokey to get him out. On the way there I finished off the twelve pack that was under the seats that the cops didn't find and got busted by the cop who busted my buddy, while pulling into the parking lot of the cop shop.
Not my best moments for sure. Then again, they don't call alcoholism a disease for nothing.
It's a great conversation starter though.
P.S. I went to Hughes Sr's court with a friend once for his DUI. Hughes asked him what he did and if he had graduated high school. My friend told him that he was a line cook in Mexican restaurant and no, he didn't graduate high school.
Hughes Sr. spent the next 5 minutes lambasting the poor guy in front of a packed courtroom over his life failures.
My friend was not happy.

Hijack complete
Jonas Hughes is a spoiler for the south of the river vote.
ReplyDeleteTony, you funny guy, you were taken for a ride.
great fiction @5:48 and I think that Tony is winking and nodding at us all now.
ReplyDeletebe careful T. a new visitor to this site wouldn't know.
Sly James for Mayor of Overland Park.
ReplyDeleteGood news Jonas. You don't have the support of crooked political consultants that have run the city into the ground. I wasn't sure about you, but you have my support now. Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteJONAS HUGHES FOR MAYOR!
I wrote 5:48, not Tony. If you've been here for any amount of time you know that Tony can't even spell, let alone write coherently and in complete sentences.
ReplyDeleteIt's all true.
LOL 5:48/6:45--you got more of that? You got talent, you need a blog or something!
ReplyDeleteOn Hughes: He sounds OK, a smaller fish in the pond of six. Need to learn more about him. Still some time for research.
"Jenny" Hughes takes a wide stance like Larry Craig in many T Rooms around town.
ReplyDeleteHughes knows even less about how this city works than does Sly James. His record at the state level is pathetic; his attendance/vote record a joke. Somebody, and I don't know whom, is funding his campaign as a complete spoiler. He is ineffectual and would make a horrible mayor.
ReplyDeleteI believe the crazy story about Judge Hughes. I've heard plenty worse than that and from all reports, Hughes Sr. is not a nice guy nor a fair or proper jurist. Happy to hear different from others, but for now, Hughes is O-U-T of the race.
Jason, his grill IS ugly, but what is up with his Jesse Jackson eyes?

ReplyDeleteI agree with some others here. You have talent. Keep writing.
I have mentioned Hughes running to several people in the Black community and the reaction has been the same; uncontrollable gut wrenching laughing. Everyone has asked why would he do such a horrid thing and who put him up to it. Half of this group didn't know Sly and were not inclined to vote for him because they didn't know him. However, none were willing to support Hughes simply because they do not believe he has done anything meaningful in his current position nor do they believe he has the propensity to move the city forward. He will get some votes due to name recognition but if the truth about his record comes out along with his perception as a laughing stock among his Capitol counterparts then he will only spend alot of someone elses money. It would seem more appropriate to give to a charitable cause than to waste the money of truly helpful or misguided benefactors. So, while your enthusiasm over this "fresh voice" is tantalizing it is also the same soup warmed over in City Hall. I actually like much of your insight but I believe you are off the mark my friend. No time for more spoilers of the Ciry's resources and reputation. Our city can't afford these raunchy and divisive political games.
ReplyDeleteMike Burke should bow out in favor of Hermann? You have got to be kidding right? Why would he think she has a better chance than he does? He has the Education, resume both professional and civic to consider himself a viable candidate. Tell me what Hermann's work history is? Other than a Council member list her paid jobs and her volunteer work. I don't know that she has worked ever. This is laughable. I can see a neighborhood volunteer has something to bring to the table as a council member, a point of view as it were, but a Maor should have some professional history from which to draw on when complex decisions have to be considered and made. Hermann has always been a parrot of whomever she thought sounded smart on any subject. She fell on the sword believeing Ken Baccus was right on housing and we ended up in receivership and have not had a housing program in years. She presented Funkhousers first budget as her own and has since used whatever Troy Schulte gave her. I am not saying she is dumb but she is unoriginal and lacks enough personal knowledge and experience to judge thepeople who are advising her.
ReplyDeleteJoanas the Joke-- ask him about the TIF set aside contained in the Safety Sales Tax. You will get a half hour of the most amusing two step, "let me tell you about that" which convinces everyone listening that he has never heard of it much less has any idea what the question is.
ReplyDeleteHe is a child in love with his own voice.
