State Representative Leonard Jonas Hughes IV Officially Enters Kansas City Mayoral Race

KANSAS CITY – State Representative Leonard Jonas Hughes IV announced today that he will seek the office of Kansas City Mayor in 2011.

“After talking with many supporters and local leaders, I have decided that it is time for real leadership in Kansas City. As the people’s mayor, I will fight to bring real jobs to our city and to make our neighborhoods safer. If we work together, we can restore confidence in City Hall.”

Hughes has served in the Missouri House of Representatives since 2004 and is a member of the House Budget Committee, serving as the ranking member of Appropriations- General Administration. He also serves on the Elementary and Secondary Education Committee, Committee on Fiscal Review and Special Standing Committee on Urban Issues. He serves as Chief Deputy Whip of the Democrat Caucus and is a member of the Democrat "Blue Dog" Caucus in the Missouri House, which emphasizes fiscally responsible policies.

“I am running for Mayor because Kansas City deserves a leader dedicated to serving the people and protecting their tax dollars. I know the importance of putting the city’s issues first before political ego. It’s time everyday families voices are heard, jobs are created, small businesses grow and we return real leadership to City Hall, ” said Hughes.

Hughes is currently Vice Chair of the Black Caucus in the Missouri House. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Rose Brooks Woman’s Domestic Violence Shelter, and is a member of the Committee for County Progress and NAACP.

  2. This will be exciting. I actually like Jonas and think he will bring the voice needed in this race.

  3. Someone with real credentials within the black community. Not a person like Sly James who actively worked to defeat Emanuel Cleaver in his first race for Congress.

  4. Fun times ahead. The more people in the race the more likely it is that someone who gets 10% of the likely voters wins the election.

  6. Anybody who's been in the Missouri Legislature six years has a trail of influence-peddling, moneygrubbing, and corruption a mile long and ten yards wide.

Everybody knows his hand is in deep in the pay-to-play cookie jar, and once he jumps into bed with the firefighters union it'll be a cozy of cronyism at city hall.

However, Kansas City gets the mayor it deserves on a consistant basis. This time will be no different.

  7. Let me get this straight: You want someone who is "qualified" (the complaint against Deb Hermann), but anyone who is qualified must be corrupt (the complaint against Leonard Hughes). If you can't agree on an alternative, you'll re-elect Gloria Squitiro by default. Is that you want?

  8. Where is he gonna get the money? Whatever you do don't take a check from him.

  9. Right you are, Hyperblogal!

Be careful of all your cheerleading in the mayoral race...

Too many candidates makes Funk's margin needed for victory all the less...

  10. He'll destroy Sly but he won't win.

  11. There's something wrong with him if he thinks Ben Stein is cool.

  12. It's been mentioned a couple times already, but I'm back to my fantasy of Funk finishing second in a wide open primary and winning a second term just because of name recognition.
Monday I thought he was toast; Wednesday I'm back to worrying about his chances.

  13. I agree with Toadstool. What a joke.

  15. He will be out by the end of summer.

  16. he won't beat Sly. As a seasoned politician please point to one thing that he has done in 6 years in the state house? He can't beat Kiki Curls for Wilson's Senate seat. He is too dumb to get a real job.

  17. Kansas City is such a loser city.

  18. 12:02. Sly James hooked up with Democrat Jamie Metzel before Cleaver announced that he was running for the Congressional seat. Since he had already given him his word he talked to Cleaver and explained the situation. Michael Fletcher I mean 12:02 at no time did James actively work against Cleaver. In fact if you look at his campaign disclosures he donated to Cleaver's campaign.Jonas has served six years in the Missouri legislature only because no one thinks enough of the seat to run against him. There has been no representation in that seat since Lloyd Daniel termed out of it. Jonas has done nothing but talk. He is worse than Craig Bland. At least James represents a fresh face I for one am tired of recycling black leaders especially ones who have not done. Can we say Sharon Sanders Brooks and Melba Curls both from the State to the City and have done nothing. Jonas if given the chance will be another Sharon and Melba. I will not vote for anyone in this election that has held an office in either state of city government. I want new faces and new ideas.
