TKC NOTE: Of course I'm skeptical of anything the Co-Mayor tries but his desperation to push through Schools First is simply remarkable despite the fact that most people agree it's dead on arrival. Nevertheless, Mayor Funky's last attempt to salvage credibility should be taken seriously if only because of the horrible damage he can do during his last remaining days in office. .
So, Puck has decided to mythbust the Mayor's motives and look at this hot mess strategically. Check it:
Schools First: Nothing But a Campaign Stunt
Schools First? Sure, right behind Funk and Gloria… so Schools Third!
Puck is weighing in on a topic that lots of readers don't think has much traction. And while it may not, the method being used to build interest in the topic has come under much-deserved scrutiny. The topic: Schools First. The mayor(s) are working feverishly and furiously to fashion their forces to put Schools First on the ballot in August. They will ask voters to foolishly approve a $100 million bond issue. What folly!
Let Puck explain why Schools First is nothing but a big campaign stunt. By pretending to push his poorly thought out and pathetic plan, the mayor(s) are in essence CAMPAIGNING FOR RE-ELECTION. It is already happening, and Schools First billboards have been newly-branded with the tagline, "A City That Works." These billboards were allegedly paid for by Jim Nutter! They should be treated as a campaign stunt, and nothing more.
The mayor(s) are counting on an August vote so that they can quickly begin construction on public improvements that will do little to help KCMO schools. (A few curbs and sidewalks will not bring back accreditation.) Today, the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee will vote on ordinance 100401, authorizing the Schools First bonds. With Riley and Curls in the bag on the issue, and Marcason and Skaggs being sensible 'no' votes, it remains to be seen what Miss Jolly does. Will Jolly have the guts to do the right thing and kill the ordinance? Doubtful, as she is not exactly trail-blazing material, but you can hope, dear readers.
Let's face a few hard facts, shall we readers? The City is already carrying a substantial load of debt per capita. In fact, per capita, KC has THREE TIMES the debt load of other comparable cities. The mayor(s) plan would require the city to pay debt service on the additional $100 million, a lousy layout for a city that is already leveraged to the extreme. Additionally, the city would have to take money AWAY from the current capital budget to pay DEBT SERVICE on the new bonds. Why not just use existing capital dollars and target the areas around schools for capital improvements?
The Answer: Because running this city well is a foreign idea to the co-mayors, and to about half of the council. It's about power and re-election. It's about a city that works… for them. Watch closely, dear readers, to the council members who vote for Schools First. Ask yourself, what do they stand to gain from their vote? Meet back here in a few days and we'll discuss… for now, chat amongst yourselves.
We love puck
ReplyDeleteAnd I just cannot stand this poor excuse for leadership on the 29th floor. They are hurting this city beyond measure. Schools First is foolish and waste of money. It is grossly misguided and has no basis in logic, given the long-standing problems of KCMSD. Fix what's going on inside the schools. Let Covington handle that.
ReplyDeleteAmen to both 6:45 and 7:13! Puck really gets it, and thankfully Tony posts him on this site.
ReplyDeleteI encourage people to boycott the mayor's campaign events.
ReplyDeleteYa gotta wonder what this fixation with holding a education-themed event in the Sprint Center is all about? Funk has been fixated on this for several years.
ReplyDeleteThat billboard cost a lot of money, and yet the City has not endorsed Funkhouser's "Schools First" nonsense.
ReplyDeleteSo WHO paid for the billboard? Funkhouser's political backers? Or tax payers?
Looks like it could be a misappropriation of funds.
Nutter, apparently. Big mistake.
ReplyDeleteThis is a lose-lose for the Mayor. Because if it gets on the ballot it will go down to defeat and it will show that the Mayor has no chance for re-election.
ReplyDeleteI'm confused. Is this a public meeting, or a campaign rally for Gloria Squitiro's reelection?
ReplyDeleteWhat will it cost to open the Sprint Center for this? Other town hall meetings have had very few attendees. This sounds irresponsible economically and ecologically.
ReplyDeleteWhen will someone call this for what it is - billboard not withstanding.
ReplyDeleteITS A TAX INCREASE!!!!!
Brought to you by the people who couldn't manage their way out of a paper bag to begin with.
Now city hall wants more money for infrastructure needs that should be a part of the regular annual budget.
WTF!!!
Either way, its spelled:
TAX INCREASE
How bout we cut spending Mr. "smart with the money", "city that works" Mayor?
It died in committee.
ReplyDeleteFor those of you wondering about Funk's fixation on education theme, don't forget he did apply to be the KC School District superintendent.
ReplyDeleteWho is on which half of the council?
ReplyDeleteHere's the end.
ReplyDeleteMr. Mark Squitiro and Mr. Jim Nutter lost the council vote and they are losing in Jeff City.
Schools First- dead
Educational Summit- dead
KC Harlem Renaissance- dying
New Tools- dead
Minority Outreach Coordinator In Mayor's Office- dead
Urban Credit Union- dead
several more schemes, but they have slipped my mind. Doesn't matter, they are all dead.
It took our bumbling idiot mayor to bust Jim Nutter wide open.
Is that his legacy? Perhaps we can ask for stronger nepotism laws from our law maker in Jeff City. That would be a better legacy.
ADA ignored-Funk doesn't care about laws or people.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the co-mayors forgot that disabled people and their friends, families VOTE and spend money, as well as pay taxes. and it's THE LAW.
It died in committee.
ReplyDeleteHooray!
That Fucker is a lame duck.
ReplyDeleteThe Sprint center with this event's free parking looks like a mighty fine place to hold a "GET GONE FUNK" event. Signs, t-shirts balloons. Get creative! Maybe gear it toward a YouTube event.
ReplyDeleteReally, who likes him? He has pissed off ADA advocates, neighborhood residents, Tea Party people, Minutemen, all minorities, most school board members from all of KC's school districts. Local business owners, artists, small shop owners, dog walkers, store clerks working in Brookside, Plaza workers, MAST, WATER, KCPD, Local 500 members, the mechanics at 56th and Prospect... et al
I say let's go and shout the coward down!!
add church members in the "black part of town" who were used like stage props.
ReplyDeleteStop wasting precious words breaking Funk's plan and his stupidity down point by point. I'll give you a free lesson.
ReplyDeleteThe Schools First plan is ridiculous and makes no sense. The guy who brought it up is ridiculous and makes no sense.
See how easy that was.
Don't boycott Funk's Sprint Center show on Monday. Go see it for yourself. Bring food, some beer and some noisemakers. If you have a bullhorn, bring that too. Also bring your camera and if you have one, bring your camcorder.
Most importantly, don't forget your paintball personal delivery system. Funk will make a great target walking back and forth on the stage like ducks at the carnival.
Finally someone thinking outside the box.
ReplyDeleteEveryone in the city who despises and deplores the DoubleFunks should show up en masse with nice big signs that let the Gruesome Twosome know exactly how we feel about their idiocy.
If you have a van, load up some bums from downtown and bring them to the event.
Jam the event! Time to tell the doofus to "BEAT IT" Just for nostalgic fun dig out your RECALL FUNK t-shirts. Or make your own. We are paying for the space, we might as well use it to do good. I like the paintball idea.
ReplyDeleteThey'll probably have wireless mics for Funk to use. They are very easy to jam with the right equipment.
ReplyDeleteBefore you head to the Sprint Center, stop in at one of our many fine local watering holes around downtown and get liquored up first.
It should be a fun time.
So much for Funk's promises to the anti-billboard group.
ReplyDeleteBye bye Co-mayors.
ReplyDeleteWho paid for the bill-board?? The Co-mayors are a joke.
ReplyDeleteI have heard that the Co-Mayors are now courting Russ Johnson and may put him on the T&I committee to assist thier "goals". Will Mr. Johnson sell out and take the gig?
ReplyDelete3:44 PM - Mr. Squitiro has a deep loathing of the disabled. They frighten him.
ReplyDeleteThis childish bickering has got to stop. Time to wipe out all the Leadership that is participating in it. The Mayor Pro Tem didn't even make the motion. What gives? He should be the fist to lost his job. Can't the Mayor put a group of people who are tried of the BS together and get something done? Isn't everyone tired of this infantile group constant games and playground bullying? Enough is enough.
ReplyDeletenot typing well this am [prior post looks stuppppid
ReplyDeleteThey feel that way in Prairie Village too!
