Here's a bit of a TKC EXCLUSIVE regarding the recent Kansas City Urban Farming Ordinance put on hold.
OPPONENTS OF URBAN FARMING IN KANSAS CITY ARE USING ANTI-LATINO SENTIMENT TO SUPPORT THEIR ARGUMENTS!!!
I generally like the Council Dude accused of doing this and for the most part I support his work . . . But if I hear it again I'm gonna get pissed.
Anyhoo . . . The arguement made by a Council dude on this one was basically: We don't want urban farms in Kansas City Neighborhoods because people might recruit Day Laborers from the Westside and bring them into local neighborhoods.
This slam against Latinos looking for day work based only on appearances is just part of the ridiculous rhetoric that has turned Dora the Explorer into a controversial figure. If City Council people are using racist and reactionary talk in their rhetoric then the anti-Latino backlash is now truly complete.
Now, I'm not sure about Urban Farming but I have to say that arguments employing Latino stereotyping and (on the opposite side of the spectrum) sentiments about breaking the corporate food supply espoused by The Liberty Restoration Project have caught my attention.

ReplyDeleteI'd LOVE to have the phone number of an illegal who will work for five bucks an hour to do my yardwork, or clean the bathrooms.
But I have more respect for Mexicans so that I'll do my own housework. I hve never paid yardworkers less than $15 an hour for professional service, even under the table.
Beware of corporation types (Republican led) who aren't so fair, who lower that to five bucks and smile at themselves for getting such a good deal! Fuck the workers, its all about bottom line!
